How to make villains scary?
Make them logically effective
And soulless looking
I love how ruthless, unfeeling, and unflenching Sentinels were.
@@slithered Combine that with a creativity that's downright sadistic... yeah, they're terrifying.
To clarify, I'm referring to things like the tug-of-war that ripped Colossus in two and Warpath being lowered *face-first* into a Sentinel's beam.
There's also the fact that the Sentinels look like they're glaring hatefully at everyone they see.
Its easy to make scary OP villains, its not easy to come up with a creative but reasonable way for the heroes to take down those villains especially when those villains are supposed to be an absolute threat, just think abt it, if u were fighting a thief empty handed you'd probably beat him 1 on 1 right? but what if that thief had a gun pointed to your head, how would u escape that without PIS or external help?, not that easy is it?, same thing with writing characters, that's why villains are often written being taken down by one of these 3... monologing, hubris or being overpowered cuz those r the only "reasonable" ways the good guys would win
@@ridgefrost A lot of people don't understand that writing villains and heroes well is one giant balancing act and is very hard to get just right.
Make the villains too op = bullshit way of defeating them
Make the heroes too = boring with no stakes
Make the villain much more powerful than the hero and are only BARELY defeated by the hero but they have a well-thought out weakness = just right (for example, Omni Man from Invincible was only defeated by his son because his son made his father feel guilty enough to leave the planet)
This is one of the few times the villains are better in the movie than in the comics. In the comics, the Sentinels were cannon fodder and rather easily destroyed. But here they are nightmare fuel.
I thought the same thing man
They did a great job, there is noone that has been more intimidating and downright scary like the sentinels. Not even apocalypse with all his power. They just made the mutants look so helpless and the soulless robots so powerful. Really enjoyable film.
Well the era in the comics wasn’t as modern too lmao … and the comics were made like way before our time
Because the Sentinels in the comics didn't have the Mystique treatment that these ones got.
Nimrod was the inspiration. They just multiplied it in the movie
The Sentinels are perhaps the most impressive enemy robots I have ever seen in movies. Certainly more threatening by far than the Ultron bots or Terminators. Every action they take is performed with such an economy of movement, with no wasted energy. Really succeeds in giving the impression that they are perfected killing machines.
Sentinels are to mutants what Terminators are to ordinary humans.
There's economy of movement because the characters they're fighting have no plot armor....
@@themightyswanson Yes, and that makes them actually feel like a threat rather than an inconvenience like the Chitauri in Avengers or the Ultron bots in Age of Ultron or the Outriders in Infinity War.
this is how i imagine my teeth turned into a robot would be O______o

They did such an amazing job displaying the Sentinel’s devastation and aura. You can feel the disparity of the X-Men from the start to their gradual elimination.
Amazing job cucking for the sentinels, hope they notice this

Sometimes I watch this scene just because of the chills it gives me, the way the sentinels silently stalk the heroes and then go god mode and tear them to shreds. Epic

First time I notice that Sentinel ripping the arm off of colossus and that it's punch actually crushed his head, you can see the relief of it's hand on Colossus' head after. Awesome and absolutely brutal
Oh shit I didn’t even see that - I just thought it was like molten metal and it was dripping off him.. just shows you - violence doesn’t need to show blood to be effective
This is the bit that really got to me...hits him so hard, tears his arm clean off 😞
Gawd I'm slow......didn't even notice the arm rip 🤦🏾♂
Unless you pause and look for it, its near impossible to see. Because Colossus punches with his left hand, the sentinel's body ends up blocking the camera's view of the left hand. And the camera doesn't pause to show you Colossus's hand after it gets punched, it instantly pans upwards, so you cant see the impact on the head unless you can pause...which obviously isnt possible in the cinema.

For me, the Sentinels are more awful. Or should I say more cheating because they have no weakness. It's like you just created the 10,000 armies of Nemean Lions and Erymanthian Boars. Just unfair fight. While the Dark Phoenix, well even the old queen can punch her in the face. Even if she gets hurt by one slap, especially if you just want to piss her off, it even hurts her. But the Sentinels, they don't get hurt by mere slaps. If you get my point.
Well apocalypse was better than dark Phoenix
Damn…imagine if they made Ultron this menacing.
If Ultron was like this he'd be too OP for the avengers to handle. The sentinels power to adapt is OP asf. If it were it'd be like Ultron adapting to attacks and he'd be ridiculously OP. Remember Ultron is made of vibranium. It took Thor, iron man and vision to destroy parts of him together.

Given there was a more comic like one in X3, were there a time, they were more like the comic version. Cause the mark 1 and mark x versions have similar head shapes.

I've always wondered why that one sentinel was able to stab Blink. She seems to make portals that "one directional" like the first one she made yet that one portal seemed to end at the same side no matter what side you entered from.
I also just realized Blink could have sent Kitty to that safe from the beginning but that's just for the plot I guess
hmm, ur right

This is not a thriller nor a horror movie yet these are pure nightmare-like, love this scene. Protagonists aren't weak and can defend themselves, enemies are not overpowered initially per se, but are crazy persistent, endurant and keep coming back

Besides their designs, Sentinels were so well done. Warner Bros needs to learn from Fox/Disney/Marvel how to make tense villain moments. Doomsday, Zod and Darkseid just never felt like they had any impact or hopelessness in their showdowns.
They just need to hire better directors and writers. I will never understand how they looked at Snyder, who had 5 movies up to that point, only 2 were actually good and one was fun, and said 'we are going to put him in charge of our superhero universe'. Doomsday should be so easy to do it with, he has a lot of what makes the Sentinels scary. Even Smallville made Doomsday actually scary, and their budget was peanuts.
Lmao your comment made me laugh. this is one of the v few well done villains scenes from fox, do you want them to learn from the dark Phoenix Sega or the apocalypse sega? And marvel's famous for not having good villains, they have like 3 good villains out of 30+ movies, not exactly learning material. Darkseid defo had the hopelessness factor when he was on screen, we just didn't get to see his full potential due to lack of screen time.
@@masterdon187 I never said a single thing about Fox, not one word. I talked about the sentinels specifically, although Magneto is usually handled well, he's an antihero more than anything. For scary villains, Fox ONLY has the sentinels. I say Marvel has probably had 5 good villains, like 7 movies between them. And again, the only specific property I called out was Smallville, which was usually pretty bad, and even THEY made Doomsday scary. My point was that you could take almost ANY director, give them Doomsday or Darkseid and have the result be intimidating. My point was just that Snyder is actually worse than being completely average.

Why don't Blink open a portal under Sentinels and drop them in a Lava Mountain ? or better when they're about to fall she shut the portal and cut them in half over and over again.
This version sentinel will survive lava. Beside, Blink may not be on full control of her portal. Should just run as whatever resistance they put will be useless as the sentinels will continue to charge anyway.
@@danyleon4870 Sent em to black hole :)
Then the movie would finished before it started lmao
@@ufuksnmez98 That's why they have a mutant power.
@@danyleon4870 i didn't say this for you :") you're right btw
When I was a little kid, I really confused Sunspot as the Human Torch, I was like "Oh my god! Is that the human torch?! Is the fantastic four in this movie too?!" Ngl it still would've been awesome to see the fantastic four in a x-men movie.
3:45 I always laugh at Warpath with his Captain America Endgame vibe right here. And then how he immediately is dispatched. 😂
This starting scene gave me chills
If only there was Jean during this time
I think i like this design for the Sentinels better than the comic version
That one guy who can adapt to anything battle of adaptation
