- You're hard-pressed to find a $1.50 hamburger in the year 2022, but it's still possible at Texas Tavern in Roanoke, Virginia. The other menu items are dirt cheap too.
The 24/7 establishment has 10 stools. It's been serving customers since the early days of the Great Depression.
"You may have a judge sitting next to a guy who just got out of jail, sitting next to a banker, sitting next to a little old lady, sitting next to a couple of kids, and a Hells Angel, everyone. It’s all walks of life. They all come in here, rubbing elbows," owner Matt Bullington told me.

Try to make this story short. Back in the 80's, around 2 am ,me and my buddies came in after the bars shut down. One of my highly inebriated pals sat down and ordered a bowl with. Guy behind counter sat his chili down on the counter. He then turned around to prepare another order. My buddy stands up on the foot rail to get his wallet out to pay. When he sat back down he missed the stool. Clawed his way back to his seat from the floor and grabbed his full bowl on his way back up. Sat down and started eating what was left in his bowl and not on the counter or his arm. The guy behind the counter saw none of this. He turned back around and saw the mess and said, "Damn buddy , did you get any in your mouth?" Still brings a smile to my face when I think of it.
Spouse and I were house hunting in Roanoke in 2022. Stopped in Texas Tavern late one evening, hungry and tired. Chatted with everyone there while eating. Good value and good conversation. The experience was low-key wonderful!
That's a perfect description. It's really part restaurant, part spectacle. I hope TT remains in business for generations to come.

Went there this past weekend. Burgers are now $2.55. Still awesome.
