    *If some of you really take an interest, what experiences i made with effect-pedals and sound of the Orange "Micro-dark" -well - here is, what i can tell you:*
    - First: *Don' t get fooled by the name...this is far more then a one-trick-pony- small hyper-distorting, hyper-scooped power generator for "dark dooomsday metal apostles"!!*-
    Sometimes ago, I bought me the "Orange Micro-dark" for home work, because i first thought of a well sounding, uncomplicated little amp which does good "tube-driven" high-gain-sounds, but when i got and explored it, i found, that it was much more versatile, then i first thought...- in fact (and i' m not alone with that assessment!) i now would say, the micro-dark would not be my no. 1 choice, if i'd only like to have an extremly specialized typical "metal kind" of distorted guitar sound!). But i was not sad about that, because my musical activities are in the area of straight, prog hard rock and - on the other hand - a kind of southern blues rock. What i can say now, is: There are some "lunchbox amps" that nail this well -known scooped brutality you need for example for an extreme "metal sound" quite a bit (not dramatical!) better....- on the contrary, when you push in the gain, the "micro dark" shows an astonishing warm, for a hybrid amp appreciably natural kind of a typical british, tube-like - in the best sense - rock type of well-saturated distortion (and i do not say this, because i own one ;) - ...!.) - i can truely say, this little thing meets exactly the sound, "Orange" amps stand for!
    And i was amazed a little, for i would never have expected this from an amp of this size and price level!! - Of course - the "micro dark" is a little beast, you can reach a fine punch of distortion, and - if you really want to - scooping the mids is no problem, thanks to the extremely sensitive "shape" control, but the over-all of the impression, that i got is, that the amp sounds pleasantly traditional....it' s more suitable for "classical" conceptions of "hard' n heavy" music - that's my opinion - ....
    - I made a lot of sound testings, using only the sound of the amp - and also integrating *different overdrive and distortion units and nearly all kinds of other guitar effect devices* ( in the usual ways: gain-pedals & eq directly into the input section and different modulation & reverb/delays in the effect chain and also some "special" pedals, like pitch-shifter & even a guitar- synth) - sometime levelling the individual signals was a bit tricky and also finding the optimal places for the different devices in the chain , but finally the amp worked fantastic with all effects.
    I made real good results with a t-rex "mudhoney 2", which gave me a crisp, "juicy" crunch overdrive on channel one and a full creamy, high-gain lead sound which reminds me remarkable of the sound texture which is very near to this of in the harder solo parts of -for example - a Steven Wilson on channel 2.
    By using only the amp's sound settings, i got good results with the gain knob at 11 - 12 h and shape at 11 h for a bluesy solo sound and approx. 15 h for full frontal hard rock solo (i used both, humbucker and single coil pick-up equipped guitars).
    Because of the solid-state power section you can manage to get satisfying clean undistorted sounds by holding the gain below 9 - 10 h, but this is not the strenght of the device! - The "Micro-Dark" is definitely a rock-amp and wants his user to kick its ass!!😝🤘
    Another real great thing that i found, and that i will truely recommend you, was using a *stomp-box eq* (f.e. as the boss ge-7 eq with boost function) straight into the input-section - you can additional colorize your high-gain-sounds, or, - by using it in the effect-loop, that will turn your "micro-dark" into a 2-....or even a 3-channel amp. My "micro dark" took the eq pedal well - but please keep here in.mind, that the boost level must be aligned very careful with the total gain of the amp - i learned, that the switch must be used extremely careful, especially when you use clean or light crunched sounds, because the amp tends to react extremely sensible to every boosting of the signal in the effect chain!
    What i found mostly important was (and please keep this in mind!) - for a respectable sound, it is absolutly important to use an *accuratly as possible voluminous speaker cabinet! Never ever* use these inferior mini-cabs that they designed for all of these lunchbox amps!! - For a full, bright sound you need a box with good, at least 12" speakers, f.e. Celestions. In my opinion, the "Orange" cabs with Vintage 30' s are here recommended!! - I can only give this tip to everybody who' s in doubt, which cab he/she should choose: *The "Orange" Celestion 1x12"", better: 2x12", or 4x12" cabs are a sound-dream* - perhaps the best speaker cabs in acceptable price ranges you can find for rock music on the present market!! Absolutly no joke!!
    Hope you benefit from my experiences a bit - the "micro-dark" has - of course in its dimensions and price-zone - its limitations - but its a fantastic little animal and - in my opinion - nearly unbeatable for *that* money!! You will hardly find an amp in this catagory that gives you so much respectable "british tube sound" for so little money - and, if you take a little time and experiment how to chain your effects and set them right into line - you can blow up this "lunchbox" to a versatile, multi-channel rock amp! And, with the right cab - it has far enough power and loudness even for rehearsals and - f.e., as i do, as a backup-amp - small club gigs!!
    All the best!! Stay healthy and keep rocking!!🤘🎸
    Andy from germany!
    P.S. *Thanks for this informative vid! Carry on!*

    I love the Micro Dark for blues/rock sounds. I just wish that Orange made a 1x10 because I think that the 1x8 is too small, but a 1x12 would be too much

    • @Da_Publick

      A company called BFG Cabs made a product called the PPC 110 "with the idea that Orange left a gap in their cab lineup. They have the PPC112 (1x12) and the PPC108 (1x8). The BFG110 was designed to fill that gap."
      Necessity breeds invention, no?

    This amp is actually my main gigging rig. I have pedals in the front end and in the FX Loops and it takes pedals really well. I did swap out the stock 12ax7(ECC83) and put in a JJ Gold Pin 12AU7 for more clean headroom. It sounds pretty freaking awesome, and I get compliments from other musicians after shows on the regular. Usually set up on stage with an over-sized 2x10 Panama Cabinet, with use of the cab sim into a board and the cab mic’d up (depending on the stage setup, it varies). It’s fun surprising folks with the size and tone/volume this thing pumps out. I use a vox type pre-amp pedal in the FX loop sometimes depending on the gig to change my EQ. Only real gripe for me is the cab sim, which can get fizzy. It’s totally usable but kind of wish it was a little better in quality. But for the price, and what you get, this amp is super difficult to beat.

      I'm interested in the micro dark and the micro terror... When swapping the tubes, how much more headroom do you get? Enough to keep up a clean(ish) tone with live band, not at outrageous rock levels? Thanks much

    Clean tone at 4:50 - Now you're talkin' ! No more buzzin' outta that little 8" speaker with the gain up. That little box with an 8" speaker can't handle any kind of distortion at all, it just buzzes like hell. Plug that Micro Dark into a real 2 x 12 cab and that would be night and day, too, as I've noticed a LOT of people have mentioned. I've heard some demos of the Micro Dark into 4 x 12's as well and it'll knock your socks off, but that 8" speaker is just the worst.

    I have the regular Micro Terror and I run it through a vertical 2x12 plywood cabinet with V30's You can totally gig with it(as long as you're not after a pristine clean) but totally loud enough through a 2x12 or 4x12 tp keep up with all but the hardest hitting drummers. Even so, when mic'ed up, it will do the job. It's great to have as a back up if a main head fails, but even on it's own for rock, classic rock or punk tones through a big cab, it sounds pretty damn good!

    It’s a great amp if you spend some time with it. I used to gig (small clubs) with this and a Vai 2x12 cab and the amp sat on my pedal board! . There is magic in the mildly distorted tones where it becomes a great pedal platform. And using a clean boost pedal in the fx loop will make it very loud. :-)
    It’s a great option when it is raining like a mofo and you don’t want to haul a HRD 4x10 to the gig.

    A valve amp is a very possible next addition to my little box of tricks, but I'm not altogether keen on that sound. That's just personal opinion of course, others may think that sounds like honey. Been contemplating the Rocker 15 Terror, My nephew has the DT30, which I've never heard live, simply because he lives in a flat and he sez the thing is flipping monstrous, and is therefore about to sell it. Thanks for the demo though, it does help narrow down the field. Pity though, love the price of these things, and the size.

    • @frededberg6893
      @frededberg6893 6 років тому

      It's true. There are 3 main reasons 8" speakers just don't work very well for guitar amplification:
      1. A bigger speaker can reproduce the longer wavelengths better.
      High notes are short wavelengths, low notes are long wavelengths.
      Translation: if you want full, rounded low-end, use a bigger (12", 15", 18") speaker.
      2. The sensitivity ratings of smaller speakers is typically less than that of their larger counterparts. It is unusual in the guitar amp world, to see an 8" driver having sensitivity of above about 96db; whereas, most 'quality' 12" drivers are rated anywhere from about 95db all the way up to about 103db. The larger driver just produces a lot more absolute output. Average is about 98db or so. A 98db driver is twice as loud as a 95db driver. A 101db driver is 4x as loud as a 95db driver.
      3. There are just a lot fewer 8" drivers made compared to 12:" drivers. Amp/speaker manufacturers just don't make it a focus to use 8" drivers in their products; hence, there just aren't that many available. However, there are many very fine HiFi/PA 8" drivers -- and anyone looking to upgrade should seriously look at some for guitar use. One I have found that I absolutely love is the JBL/Selenium 8PW3 (it's a 125WRMS PA speaker). Nice full low-end, clear chimey highs, an intrinsic mid scoop as well---for those liking vintage Fender type tones. It is a very capable 8" guitar amp speaker. It has a 92db efficiency; so it isn't super loud, but can handle a good deal of power pushed to it.

    I had this exact amp and cab. The amp sounded good through the 1x8 cab, but after I played it through a 2x12 I came to realize how poorly matched the head and cab were. You'll never really know what the micro dark head can do until you play it through a proper cabinet instead of that cheap and cheerful unit orange bundles with it.

    • @frededberg6893
      @frededberg6893 6 років тому +1

      Indeed. The same is true for almost any packaged/bundled speaker cab hosting an 8" driver. They just don't work very well. To make matters worse, the same companies usually just stick in a low-end cheap unit that has only the most modest capabilities.
      What works MUCH better (and is cheaper) is to buy a good quality driver ("speaker") and build your own solid wood (pine in my case) box for it. I have made several for

    Wow, that's a lot of gain. If you're into that kind of thing, it's great! I don't think anyone buying a high gain amp is going to be too concerned with a crystal clear clean channel but the tones you've got there are very warm and lovely. So, for what it does, I'd say it's amazing. For the price you could use an AB switch with a clean head. Or stereo! Oh the fun. Great demo, Shane :)

      They look like toys (as in really, really small) but if I get a chance to test them I will. Sky Music doesn't stock Vox for whatever reason so I'll see what I can do. :-)

    Hook it up to a big cabinet like 2x 12s or 4x12s then it will shine. The small speaker is does it no justice.

    Sounds LIKE you're playing out of a cardboard box LOL! Best served by a minimum 12" speaker. Amp it self is pretty good. NOT 1 for a lot of high headroom cleans LOL!

    Shane, I love your vids but everybody reviews the same gear over and over again. Why not check out these two small amps: Traynor Darkhorse DH15H head and the YGL1 combo? There is lots of great gear that's ignored for the sake of pleasing the big guys. It seems...

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  6 років тому

      It's whatever I can find mate. I used to have some Traynor stuff it's great but finding it locally here is tough and being able to return it/borrow is another task within itself. I had never tried an orange amp so I thought it might be fun. They actually have some more obscure stuff at the shop I'll get some more soon. I have no idea who the big guys are you're talking about either. No one tells me what to demo mate.

    I owned one and then sold it. I did not like the structure of the distortion, or the quietness of the clean tone. I tried the Micro Dark through an 8ohm 2x12 and a 16ohm 4x12. Now I own a Marshall DSL 40c and I am super happy.
    The lunchbox head thing is kind of gimmicky, simply because most of the good ones are overpriced, compared to non-boutique combo amps with similar specs.

    mmm not digging the tones from that thing. Ive played the orange bigger terror brothers a year ago shopping for a reasonably priced Amp and cabinet and i found them really average sounding for the price. I settled on a Jet city 20 watt custom with 2x12 cabinet for the same money and it blew it away.

  • @timharding9439

    Sounds mushy because you are putting the delay and reverb on the front end. This amp has got an fx loop; it would have been good to use that. Anyway, I think its clear: buy the amp, don´t buy the speaker.

  • @craigparse1439
    @craigparse1439 6 років тому +1

    The 8" speaker makes this amp sound cheap. Plug it into a 1, 2 or 4x12 and it will knock you over.

  • @diesal64
    @diesal64 6 років тому

    This recording doesn't do it any justice. I just tested this amp, and speaker combo at my local music shop. Though not to strongest on the lows. It does sound a lot better, and stronger then what you can hear in this video. Through a 12" speaker it is just amazing.

    I had an Orange Micro Terror and CR60. The dirt on both sounded fizzy like a can of bees, just awful. Both had decent clean. In the end I traded both amps in toward an OR15. Best. Decision. Ever. The OR15 sounds like a proper amp, even when toggled to 7watts. I understand there is a substantial price difference but if possible I'd recommend saving for the OR15. It's that much better. If possible try the OR15 in the store. Outstanding vintage Orange tone.

    I'd LOVE to see you do a review on the Bugera T5 Infinium lunchbox head! All tube, and seems to be really nice, at a great price point, but there are NO decent demos out there. I have one. I think your limitation with your review is the cabinet. Try running it through a 1x12 or 2x12. I run mine into a 120 Watt 2x12. It will get *really* loud through that. I bet it'd be loud enough for a jam session. It's not my main amp, but it's fun to tinker around with. It's definitely the most portable one I have and I often use it as a headphone amp when I'm travelling.
