I've just started learning royales about a week ago. After going through a few videos I have to say yours offers a completely different perspective on the trick. Everyone else just sort of assumes that you're super fit and can squat down easily - in actual fact it is very hard. No one ever talks about the front foot either. I figured out i was always way more balanced and comfortable when i let my front foot go out further than my shoulders. The other thing that makes it difficult is running a frankenstein skate setup - Original Razors Cult 8 with Roces stock frames. The angle I think is about 45 degrees. I also love what you said about 'matching the speed of the obsticle'. Today I was doing royales on a freshly waxed ledge and it was super slippery - some custom mix - I found that going faster made it easier to not slip out or lose balance
Your angle research is very helpful especially for beginners/people with old knees wondering why they don’t get boot down while (re-)learning groove tricks. So thanks for the chart!
A few more things. Law did mention stalls. When you are first learning any grind find something like some stairs to land some stalls. Make sure you can skate up jump, lock the stall, then jump off and roll away. Then you can try rolling next to a ledge or p rail and just locking down the royal foot then slowly putting pressure down and trying to put the other foot in place.
Made me feel better when you said it took you years to learn. I've been trying to back Roy on-and-off for 7 years and it's still the Trick of Death for me!
I’d say for learning any groove trick go fast. It guarantees that you’ll slide, and you can hop off even if your form isn’t right. also try just locking the end of the ledge, then it’s easy to save yourself. Great stuff as always Law
Thanks for this, super helpful. Maybe it’s not a problem in person, but I would suggest closing that hole up on the box, just to stop a boot getting stuck on a fall.
I have to agree that back Royale is one of the best feeling grinds, specially on a curved obsticle; like a bowl corner. I learned Royales many years, and hip bruices, ago, but I like to watch turorials to, kinda, see different aproaches and compare notes. I did watch the whole thing, but can I suggest doing the full video, and a cliff notes version, maybe 5 minutes long. The shorter one will hook people in and steer them to the longer one if they want to learn, but will be good enough for people like me who just want to compare notes. I'm a big fan of all you for all you do for skating.
I watched this video last night and went to the skatepark today and was able to finally hit some royals!!! Thanks for the great tutorial! 5 Stars, one thousand likes, and I hit that like as hard as I could! You're a rock star, Lawrence!
Back to blading 3 month ago at 37! Always been a torque guy, did those for miles and struggle for years with royale...time to figure this out! Love from Provins France! Thanks for all those great vids!
J'adore ta peinture sur ton murs..j'aime bien tes vidéo. Jai recommencer a faire du roller agressive a 39ans ..ont n'as plus 20ans 😅 mais le plaisir du sport est toujours là..bonne continuation dans tes vidéo
Like the fresh perspective and advice! The problem I always have is with concentrating on my back foot. Your advice about concentrating on pushing your front foot may be the main struggle that will finally unlock royales for me.
This was so good Law! The best explanation I've ever seen. I learnt things I was doing without knowing about my safety trick. Also, we're gonna need a royale angle breakdown for every boot in existence 😅 it's so interesting. Skateshops & boot companies should have the royal angle listed. I tried to learn royals on Razor Gens and could never get them. It wasn't until I switched to Remz os3s that I could do them. This makes me think it was the angle of the royale. Keep killing it Law!
little bit of wax on the curb top where the wheel meets the surface always helps and also for beginning, a small wheels with round-as-possible profile - mine always wear out to triangle shape 😃🤙
Thanks for this. I'm still not 100% confident with royales, I feel like they're a constant battle. Gonna watch this before I skate next time and give myself some time just to practice royales.
Thanks Law! I've watched a dozen "how to Royale" videos and yours finally unlocked a trick I lost 20 years ago. Every video mentions "pressing" into your backslide foot, it's a really hard thing to explain in words, but when you feel it you understand. Pushing the front foot out was the "ah ha" tip the did it for me. Wasn't thinking about any other grinds as I did it, just focused on getting that lead leg out. Thanks again! Now let's talk about Farvs, lol. 😆
@BacktoBlading I'm rocking the USD Sway Sagona pro skates. Before that Roces M12. I been skating for a couple months now. It's hard to learn because I value good teaching and not many bladers are very good teachers. It's not their fault. Even your soul tricks video helped me address nuanced details in my technique that literally no other bladers on youtube discuss. It surprises the crap outta me!
That was great, thankyou for taking the time to go into so much detail. The body position and why you'd place your feet where you do is glossed over in far too many tutorials. I especially liked the comparison of skate angles, makes me feel better about not having a chance of getting boot down with razors gens and oysi frames.
I'm in my late 20s and I just ordered my first pair of skates. I have a background in freerunning and parkour so i feel like getting into it won't be too bad. Thanks for the tutorial!
Awesome tutorial! What also helped me was really jumping onto a ledge and not just at it. The later might be ok, but especially at low speed I get thrown off early and can't grind the whole ledge. When jumping onto a ledge, even with less speed, I can stay locked longer and eventually come at a stop in royale position. That's what's especially hard on back royales.
Excelent video Lawrence! This is the type of video for me, so that i can understand all the things that influence a trick. Do more of this kind on other stuff. Like on how to air quarters, bowls, half pipe. Any of the ramps we need to fly up instead of flying forward. I feel like i need to understand about this on a deeper level.
That's a great video, I wish I had this kind of tutorial last year when I learnt royales. Another angle factor to me is also the rigidity of the cuff. While the angle is a lot sharper, I find it a lot easier to lock in that in my white 909, which have quite a rigid cuff.
I had to find cheater boots like my korey SLs to finally get boot down on these. I was royaling down rails at 15 but it was honestly more of my momentum than stance. Learning to Royal on large flat ledges has taken me until 37 to figure out. Always been a boot trick skater. I can farve alot easier than I can Royale which I've never understood until today. Great tutorial
Hey thanks for putting this out! Especially the angle stuff. I just picked up a set of gens after skating sl for a long bit and this confirms my feeling that I had to get lower on royales
Great Video as always Lawrence! 🤩 Can’t wait to try again with my front leg more up front, maybe that’s why mine royals not going as nice I would like to do them 👍🏼👌🏼🤷🏻♂️
Great tutorial. Loved the angle chart on different skate angles. Biggest other tip I can add is for figuring out which direction you should royale. I found this is totally based on your hip direction similar to riding goofy or regular on a skateboard. Like you said if they've got the front side that should be same direction for the royale. Taking that concept of hip direction has helped me open some other tricks as well. Great work!
Great video very helpful! If you can do a future video on farvs (you got them on lock) and mistrials that would be great. I’m still having trouble with them.
Well done content! I wasn’t really aware of this angle issue and quickly realized that I can’t manage the trick with my M12. Fortunately I have a pair of CJs and a Kaltik frame. Makes a total difference. Therefore thanks for the “scientific” approach! Like that style of analysis. Most of the other tutorials simply fail in their didactic method.🙏🙏
I learnt this 20 years ago and I am teaching two guys who just started this year. I never had problems with slipping out and when I was a kid I did it a few times on rails as cuff down (boot groove+cuff, no frames touching) This was on psirus and I was not really using my cuff buckle, there was also a groove in the cuff bump but I don't remember if I really thought about using that as an extra groove or it just came naturally.
Awesome tips and breakdown, thanks! I started skating again back in May after an 18 year hiatus, so of course I’ve been relearning everything. I’ve been working on royales recently, so this was super helpful. I’ve been running into pretty much every scenario you mentioned, and these tips should help me nail it.
It’s funny how much I enjoyed watching this even though I was one of the first to ever try this trick. The only thing I would add is on down ledges your shoulders need to be at the same angle as the ledge. It will stop you slipping out.
From my experience it's not linear. I focus on the upperbody and the rest will come. All balance in arms, elbows, shoulders, core and chest angle. Also a straight and pretty vertical back. Open hands/palms is important. And where you look! You should have seen the obstacle and where to land before jumping up. The sight should always be one step ahead. When up you will be looking at the landing. Good skating!
I returned to skating after some years and bought some Aeon basics , bs Royales were my go to trick and much like your video attempting bs Royales , I can no longer lock that back foot and sit on it, on ledges. Can do it coping , can’t on ledges and still haven’t figured out what I’m doing wrong.
thanks for help me n,nU I am from Chile, I love your videos, I always look forward to your new content. I need some advice I want to buy some new skates ... I learned in some cult street razors, And my question is the following one that you would recommend importing: razors SL or Razors Genesys or Razors Shift? blame my level of English :S

Was wondering what frames would you recommend trying for the best angle like the usd fm3 or sways. I’m currently riding my rollerblades SK ! Any help is appreciated.
Hard to say for me, I don’t have your flexibility. I think anything like skating will develop your core and leg muscles, but I’m not sure how stiff they’d get. Might be worth trying though, could always sell your skates if it’s not working out.
@@BacktoBlading Cool, thanks for the advice, I think I'll give it a shot. Also, I think I've narrowed selecting a skate down to the USD Aeon basic 60 XXi (I like the idea of the low center of gravity, a generous grind plate, and it being a one piece for more power transfer), but I have pretty narrow feet and skinny legs... do you think those would work well for narrow feet, or would you recommend a different skate?
