You know, I am not in the touhou fanbase, I haven't played a single game, and the remix of this was my only exposure, but I decided to look at the original song here, and not only do I still think this is better in terms of quality, this really makes me want to get into the games a lot more. Touhou seems like an amazing series of games and I am really curious as to what the full story is in them.

I played through the PC-98 games 100% blind. I remember when I first played LLS and arrived at this stage... Actually, i don't mean to destroy the picture here, but Yuuka is only usually depicted as a insane psychopath via the fanbase, canonnically she isn't really that psychopathic. So either Yuuka just got up and said "**** dis **** i'm out" and flew away to the garden of the sun or elly just went off and became irrelevant as a character.. Until ZUN decides to do something with elly, in which case... yay..? (Yuuka is depicted to be pretty evil in PC-98 canon though, but if i do recall, youkai's get less agressive as they age, and more wise. Although she's still somewhat evil as shown in Phantasmagoria of Flower View, she probably wouldnt go as far as to kill poor elly for being a bad gatekeeper (◎_◎;)

Strangely enough I heard this version first. While technically I had heard the remix first, I had never gotten a title for it. So to me, this will always be the Bad Apple I default to because it's what I first attached the title to.
I mean it's not even like we can really get mad at Undertale fans for just... discovering the original song I guess? And we can't really get mad at Toby Fox for doing something literally every game dev has done at some point in their career, which is paying homage to something they love. Hell, let's face it, Bad Apple is hardly even known for being Touhou, most people hear "Bad Apple!" and immediately get flashbacks to when they religiously listened to Vocaloid and UTAU covers of the song. it's similar to the kinds of melodies old Konami (Castlevania, Contra, Gradius) and Capcom (Mega Man, Phoenix Wright) games use, so maybe you are associating it with those?
PC-98 Touhou music has been observed to produce this effect on many people, regardless of their previous exposure to Touhou material, or their cultural background. It is an extremely bizarre phenomenon, and as someone who is also affected by it, I wish I could explain it someday.

I first got into Touhou when I saw one of the remixes, but I've really evolved since then. I've done a buttload of research on the games and characters, listened to all of the original music, played a few of the games, and fallen in love with Touhou in general. LLS gave us Bad Apple, arguably the most iconic Touhou song on the internet, AND Maiden's Capriccio, the first (and primary) battle theme against Reimu. It also has the original Master Spark courtesy of Yuuka, the first traditional-style game with playable Marisa (excluding PoDD because it's a versus-style game), the first ever mention of Gensokyo (in the game's Japanese title), and was first game to have deathbombing, focused movement, and grazing. It's genuinely crazy to me how many series staples actually originated from this one game.

Okay, so... I was reading some of the comments the other day and was like "How does undertale tie into this? A meme?" and as someone who was into undertale a while back I couldn't remember any Bad Apple meme with this particular version when in the fandom. I then was repeating the song in my head and went "the bassline sounds familiar but hm" and then it hit me lol. The bassline of this version of Bad Apple is almost identical to the bassline of the Yellow Heart section of Your Best Nightmare lol

Undertale is game inspired by Touhou, the creator of Undertale used even many touhou songs as base for undertale soundtracks. Bad apple is one of them.
Its not directly stated but its undeniable there are a lot of Easter eggs relating to touhou. And to add on to what someone else said, he did play Touhou before. Some of the attack patterns are ripped off of some characters. Some of Asriel's abilities are almost identical to Marisa Kirisame's, for instance, right down to the star patterned bullets. Honestly if you play bullet hell games, chances are, you must have at least heard of Touhou before...

Its not directly stated but its undeniable there are a lot of Easter eggs relating to touhou. And to add on to what someone else said, he did play Touhou before. Some of the attack patterns are ripped off of some characters. Some of Asriel's abilities are almost identical to Marisa Kirisame's, for instance, right down to the star patterned bullets. Honestly if you play bullet hell games, chances are, you must have at least heard of Touhou before...

interestingly enough.....for me this all started with an episode of naruto in which the wrong intro was accidentally...dah dah dahhhh...bad apple, it took me 3 years to track down what it was and when i did, i found the bad apple theme....traced it here to its wonderful origin...touhou games are actually pretty fun and the characters are all pretty interesting in my opinion
