I experimented with the number of displays at first, and came to conclusion that at least 16 is needed (2x8 chunks), but 64 is better (4x16). I believe it would be still possible, but insanely tiresome to get it all captured and synced up. I had a lot of trouble with just four so far. But yeah, maybe sometime I'll give it another go!
Software PWM indeed, 2-bit brightness per segment. The mux rate here is 2160 Hz, i.e. 9 digits * 60 frames per seconds * 4 (the animation itself is at 30 FPS, tho). It helped a lot compared to just 1-bit, introduced a kind of a magic feel.
@@shiru8bit I recently learned that the original Game Boy did its grayscale, er, greenscale using a variant of PWM as well. Interesting to see it in action to this date!
I cant imagine these phones being that much more powerful than a 48K Speccy. They both use Z80 processors and i cant imagine these have more ram than the Speccy (if these arent modified with more ram). Is it possible that this could be ported to a 48K ZX Spectrum? (Maybe even a 16K one?)
They're a bit faster (4 MHz), but there is only 2K RAM. Demo uses a 64K ROM, tho, which was a regular feature for these. Yes, it is possible to port it to a 48K Spectrum, but don't forget, there is four phones, so 64K*4 = 256K ROM in total. So either four 48K Spectrums, or an expanded model. It may get sqeezed into 128K with a bit of extra compression, though.
@@shiru8bitMakes sense. Although, wouldnt it also be possible to split the animation into 3 parts? As you said, it could be possible to compress it to 128K and 3 X 48 is 144
@@Wii1235 yes, it is possible to split it into parts. Not makes much sense for a viewer, though, to play a 4 minute song in 4 separate loads. It has been done before, though, with one of the Sega Genesis Bad Apple renditions that came as two separate 4M ROMs.
@@shiru8bittrue. Another option could be to reduce the frame rate to something around ~15FPS and to have really simple audio. Any option would still be impressive since it would be running on one of the cheapest computers from 1982
Mathematically yes, but traditionally it is called 7-segment, because there is a different type of display actually called 8-segment one (with an extra vertical segment inside the 8 shape).
Данное творение родилось из шуточного комментария, что, мол, а теперь покажи Bad Apple на АОНе. И я DOOMаю, что-то, что можно описать как DOOM, тоже вполне возможно! Спасибо за идею!
The fact that you figured out how to display it and you went and did it perfectly makes me irrationally angry. You fucking genius you.
we will never run out of things to display bad apple on
This must be Bad Apple with insect vision, I freaking love it!
Absolutely loved it! 🔥 Snapshots of the process at the end was neat to see 🤙
Damn, the UA-cam recommendations do be slapping some times. Nice job!
This is insane. Why doesn’t this have more views?
At one point it displayed “2024” near the bottom right corner.
Fantastic
Request version for 8 AONs for better resolution :)

How did you manage to dim each subsegment of the LCD so precisely, by the way?
pwm?

I had a feeling you'd have to do software PWM. Hooray for analog :-)
Congrats on the win!!!
Thanks! Actually didn't expect it, there were many cool wild entries!

Beautiful. Spectacular. Amazing
That bass though!

Great :)
This should not be as much of a banger as it is, look what they did to my boy he's the million dollar man!
This is sick! How do you make the music for this?
I actually did it in a modern way, with Reaper and a couple of my custom VSTs that then exported the music data in an appropriate format.
Вот ты заморочился! 👍
Мммм. z80!
Примерно с 1:32 музыка стала заметно отставать от "видео". Но все равно, круто!
Wow just wow🤩
