Joni performed on Grammys last night. She started as folk singer. She did Circle Game in response to fellow Canadian Neil Young song Sugar Mountain. She considers herself a painter first. She created several tunings for guitar partially for having polio as child (like Neil). Led Zeppelin wrote Going to California for her. She expanded to jazz gaining support of jazz artists. She suffered brain aneurysm several years ago and was in coma for several days. She relearned her music and walking and will perform first full show in over 30 years this summer at Hollywood Bowl. Jaco was in Weather Report. He is considered best electric bassist ever. There is video of Joni on Dick Cavett Show filmed on Monday Woodstock ended. She missed performing there because her manager didn’t think she could get to TV show. Many other performers were on that show while Jimi Hendrix crashed in green room, never going on. Joni performed and “For Free” will make you cry.

They're top tier jazz guys that can really cut loose when they wanted. But, touring with Joni they kept it chill out of respect and support of her. It worked out really well! You can tell she was thrilled to have these brilliant musicians touring with her.

@@L33Reacts If you want her solo guitar & piano days, go for the early stuff (68-72). After that, she got into a jazzier mode (74-79) working with the top cats of the day. Later on, she did a mix of many different styles. I'd start with the 68-79 material, you'll have plenty of stuff to analyze and react to, from a trailblazer with Dylan and Leonard Cohen as her only peers lyric writing wise, but topping them when it comes to music.

Joni is certainly the perfect combination of musician and poet. Her lyrics are deep and at the same time always very vivid. Her voice spans three, some say up to four, octaves. Incredible. "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns", "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" and especially "Hejira" are her LP masterpieces. "Amelia", "Song For Sharon", "Cotton Avenue", "Black Crow" and "Free Man In Paris" are some of her best songs. Her collaboration with bassist Jaco Pastorius added jazz elements to the unique Joni sound. In any case, it's worth when you are listening to more of her music.

Joni needed musicians of this caliber to back her because, as you can see, she could get pretty free-form with her arrangements. So for another musician to learn her songs they had to suss out her crazy chords, and then come up with some kind of logical framework so that they were all together harmonically. This was the peak of her jazz period, and if you like this style of Joni I'd recommend "Amelia", "Off Night Backstreet", or "Free Man in Paris".

The same concert has a nice Pat Metheny guitar solo at the end of "Amelia", and there is a solo Jaco Pastorius spot where he quotes some Hendrix. On this song he was punctuating with his typical ringing bass harmonics. Joni invented over 50 custom guitar tunings, which were tailored to specific songs. She started in the folk genre, and incorporated more and more jazz as she developed.

MsJoni is my #1 fav singer/songwriter/musician of all time, by far... I saw her live MilesOfAisles tour a few short yrs before the Shadows&Light tour (which is available in total here on YT!).
My fav lp is Hejira, with a first class jazz/blues set of personnel, of which Coyote is one tune, so many thanx to MsJane for the request. And very pleased Lee enjoyed the song; more Joni please!

The last 3 notes of the song - bass and guitar harmonics together, is just insane. Lyrics her greatest. Incomparable

Coyote is from an album called Hejira. It's a great record end to end. Very much at the jazz end of her work. But this live version is SO good. And playing with these players. None of whom would take a gig with someone who wasn't as heavy a musician as they are. Jaco Pastorius. Damn. His playing is so engaging. He's all over this. It's worth checking out his own records. And it's a J like in English.

You should check out her singing this on the album, The Last Waltz by the group the Band. It was their fair well concert on thanksgiving in 1976. It has so many guests appearances from famous musicians. Joni Mitchell sings coyote on that album. The concert was made into a film directed by Martin Scorsese.

Lee: Tons is right. This isn't a rabbit hole, it's an odyssey. By the way, the Blue album is considered by many to be her absolute masterpiece - but starting there and moving in both directions through her catalog will astound you.

Check out her album Blue. It's life changing. Just her on guitar or piano. The lyrics will blow you away.

I saw her twice, once at Wembley in 1974, with CSNY, The Band, Tom Scott and The LA Express, who backed her on the Court and Spark Album.
Saw her again for the Hejira tour, in Edinburgh at the Usher Hall. Acoustics there made her voice sound even more sublime.

🙆‍♀️wonderful. Thank you for hitting up a LADY. You heard a lot in one listen!.Joni is Annie Lennox's principle songwriting inspiration. I have a photo of the two of them together. ((Haha. I'm never gonna stop campaigning to hear Annie Lennox on your channel ...like "It's a thin Line Bewteen Love and Hate"

Amelia lets Metheny shine on guitar. Like Steely Dan, Joni gravitated to jazz over time.

The harmonics jaco utilizes are insane...how he makes them ring out so low on the neck, he was an abject legend & abject genius....i highly, highly recommend his very famous, genius fretless bass composition "portrait of tracy", ...its so beautiful, but somehow alien to this world....hes since passed but he was a beautiful soul, but he had some problems...anyway, check out "portrait of tracy", jaco pastorius

In case you are wondering, that's Jaco Pastorius playing bass in the background. You should also check out the studio cut of her song Help Me. Kurt from Maine

Joni Mtichell, Pat Metheny, and Jaco Pastorius? This is a pure astrophyscial confluence of musical forces. You are so blessed to have tasted absolute excellence (e.g. Jaco Pasotrius and Michael Brecker; look up their works). I graduated from high school when "Court and Spark" from Joni Mitchell came out (1974), and then about 5 years after that, I was introduced to Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays via the Pat Metheny Group who I got to see in a small coffeehouse venue where me and my girlfriend were barely 10 feet from the stage. It was a spiritial experience I will never forget.

The backing band on this tour included Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius…highly recommend reactions to The Pat Metheny Group…start with First Circle (warning deep rabbit hole) with over 50 albums and 20+Grammys and also Jaco played with the group - Weather Report and of course Joni has several great albums including Blue, Court and Spark

"There's no comprehending just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes and the lips you can get and still feel so alone." Supposedly about her relationship with playwright Sam Shepard.
