Gary Thorne, that was one of the most iconic calls and one of the most memorable moments in hockey history. That's the kind of thing legends are made of.

@Sonny Elliot thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
From a Devils fan, Paul Kariya is and always will be my favorite player to ever play the game of hockey. Congrats to him. He deserves every bit of this.
What a tremendous speech. What a humble class act. One immediately senses that’s a true leader speaking there (not only cause he was thanking the equipment guys). And of course: so well deserved! Congrats.
To this day Paul Kariya remains my favorite hockey player. I'm glad that he has finally allowed himself to be out in the public's eyes like this...I'm sure the Duck's organization has long wanted to do this for him, but he was MIA for quite a long time, he really cut himself out of the hockey environment. I hope one day he can comeback in any capacity, he has so much lessons to share....but that is if he is still interested. I love how he didn't forget to thank the equipment guys & their therapist. Very well spoken, one of the best guy on & off the ice, truly a class act.
Just awesome all around. Teemu is hilarious, great honoring of Kariya’s career, and cool to see a team building history. Just think about it...in 50 years youll see that number and can say i remember that and seeing that guy play.
My favorite player as a kid, without a doubt. (This is coming from a sharks fan!) at a time when I didn't know the rules, even then I knew when Paul scored. The man is the reason I love hockey. Soooo truly in the wrong era. Paul would have dominated in today's leauge without a doubt. Take a look at his stats from the dead puck era. Will never forget him coming back LIKE A BOSS and scoring a goal he doesn't even remember scoring. Chilling. A great player, and an even better guy. Thank you Paul, for sharing your gift with the world and bringing excitement. I would not be the hockey fan I am today, without you. Glad to see you're doing well.
Paul Kariya should absolutely be considered as one of the most skilled and greatest offensive talents in NHL history. Unfortunately, he played in a very bad hockey era that allowed for far too much reckless violence and if he had played in the current NHL, he would undoubtedly be right up there with Crosby, McDavid, Ovechkin, Toews, etc. Also, a magnificent on-stage delivery given by Teemu Selanne to honour his good friend and teammate. #8 and #9 -- two spectacular hockey players -- two great men. These two guys are prime examples of why hockey is the greatest sport in the world.
@@politicalbandwagon4989 he's been a good player for sure but with 883 points in 1067 games he's not hall of fame calibre like all the people that other guy listed only way he has a chance at the HOF is because of the cups but I doubt it
Now this is an amazing jersey retirement. They all should be like this. Best jersey retirement vid I have ever seen. Great job Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
I am a massive leafs fan, but I have to say, this is one of the best presentations I have ever seen. @18:42 when that banner lights up! Great job Anaheim, well deserved Paul Kariya.
I became a fan of the Ducks pretty much when they started out. I think I was 7 years old. Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne were always my heroes from start. Makes me feel old watching this, haven't watched hockey in 20 years I think but I love to go back and watch some of the great players of the 90's from time to time!
I went to the same elementary school as Paul in North Vancouver. Even though we were 15 years apart he was the pride and joy of that school. Such a great player
Brilliant player, very unfortunate to have taken too many hits. The most determined little guy to play, possibly since Ted Lindsay himself. I cried the first time I watched this, crying again as I watch it now.
I'm not crying 😭 your crying Paul your up there forever!!! Paul Kariya is my #9 and he deserves all the respect and love for what he has done in the Sport
His career was supposed to come full circle, but a concussion denied him one final season in Anaheim. I remember when 8 and 9 (Selanne and Kariya) were the faces of the team.
Yea I know that, I'm saying is Teemu thinking Paul was Japanese shouldn't be incorrect. Just because I'm born in America and someone thinks I'm Filipino is totally correct. My nationality is American, my ethnicity is Filipino. Paul is half-Japanese, so I'm just confused as to why Teemu thinking Paul was Japanese was incorrect. Can you explain that?
@@gidzmobug2323 2014 he retired but either way he will get his day just thought it would be sooner seeing that he's only 1 of 5 guys to win a Conn Smyth for the losing team ( and 1 of 2 goalies the other being Ron Hextall ) and then winning a cup so maybe they are just leaving the best for last 😉.
OFF THE FLOOR, ON THE BOARD, PAUL KARIYA!
Amazing moment indeed!
Same, I didn't think mere text would do that to you.
Gary Thorne, that was one of the most iconic calls and one of the most memorable moments in hockey history. That's the kind of thing legends are made of.
Thats the way !!!!
That and darren McCartys cup winning goal in 97 are the 2 best calls in hockey history! Bring back thorne!
Paul looks like he still could play. Guy doesn’t age
Physically he probably could have played.

Long overdue, but I am glad the Ducks organization finally did it. #9 and #8 look great up there.
always looked great together! 2 extremely classy gentlemen.
What a DUCKS ! I remember someone saying / That He doesnt want to play for MICKEY MOUSE Team !
Best duo
#8 and #9 best bromance EVER.
Spectacular speech by Teemu.
When someone gets a really good friend receives what he deserves :)
Man to see Steve Rucchin, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne together again at the pond :) thanks for the memories #20 #09 #08
From a Devils fan, Paul Kariya is and always will be my favorite player to ever play the game of hockey. Congrats to him. He deserves every bit of this.
A Devil from Finland agrees!
Honestly I loved this guy as a kid I wish he won the cup.
It pains me that he didn't and I've never been a ducks fan.
Same
I hope he considers being part of the coaching staff or front office. He can win a cup that way now :)
He choice dollars over a cup...
What a player. The speed, the shooting, the skating. And that teemu, what a great guy!
No brainer... Kariya, Iginla, and Sakic... 2002 gold medal heroes

About time Kariya's number was retired.
Next should be Giguere.
One of my favorite players growing up so amazing to see this finally happen 😊
This is awesome! Was my favorite player as a kid
I'm happy Paul has found his peace outside of hockey, and enjoying his quiet life.
This is so awesome. Congrats Paul! Selänne and Kariya my favorite players as a kid. Greeting from Finland

Ty for the memories Paul Kariya . I’m glad nobody will never wear #9 again . Congratulations
Watching him lead the small Maine college win the NCAA, I knew he was a hall of famer when I was 12.
Love Paul. Shows you these are the legit athletes who give their all compare to others

Thank you for sharing, great introduction Teemu. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Europe ...
He was my hero in my youth . a awesome Player who had sadly a lot of head Injurys >.< . but well deserved
I watched this live in my living room and gave Paul a standing ovation, and I'm not even a Ducks fan.....enough said
hockey is so beautiful
#35 would fit amazingly next to those numbers.

27 is joining them soon! Don't worry, Giggy will be up there very soon.
Probably next after Niedermayer.
Good stuff! Saw him at the hockey hall of fame game in Toronto!

From Austria to Anaheim to be there😍😎
Who else cried watching this and still does
And he damn well deserved to have his jersey retired. Well earned, and deeply respected.
We love you Paul!
:''''') Congrats PK!!!!!!!!!!!! Favorite player of all time!
This is amazing 👍
I loved everything about the ceremony. Best part was NOT mentioning Michael Eisner & his boy Tony Tavares.
Surprised that neither one of them were there, since they were in charge when Kariya was there.
The new owners have to approve the retired number . So no need for them to be there .
@@nhlhockeyman8 I meant for someone from Disney to be there for the ceremony. The Ducks were owned by Disney while Kariya was there.
