      Why'd you choose a 308 AK if you were gonna modernize it and add all that extra weight? Why not just run the last build with a magnifier? It was much faster and lighter, it just needed a magnifier. I would have liked to have seen you run a mini-beryl (since you're polish) modernized. Probably my favorite part of these Brutality matches is seeing the folks who run less-than-optimal kit. Because as great as it is to test yourself, it's still important to have fun. Competition always needs that element, otherwise it becomes another job.

Everyone in that division shows up with no rifle, maybe no kit at all, and no knowledge of what they will get. At Desert Brutality '21 I managed to get third place overall on one stage. I determined that I was able to do so because of two things: 1) shooting a pistol accurately and 2) sprinting. Running sprints isn't sexy and neither is shooting the best groups you can with your pistol on B8 targets, but that stuff translates into performance.

    Your comments WRT weight and size of past Battle Rifles is interesting when applied to the US military’s selection of a new rifle. Having carried an M1 Garand, M14 in training and field exercises and transitioning to an M16 in the active Army, that weight and size (including ammo) makes a world of difference, particularly with all the other “stuff” a soldier needs to carry.

    Great discussion as always gentlemen. You fellows mentioned British soldiers clearing small European houses with full sized SLR's. Remember that in WWII, much house clearing was done with M1 Garands, No4 MK1's, K98K's, and Mosin Nagant's. In those situations, the luckier soldiers had Thompsons, Grease Guns, Stens, MP40's, PPSh41's, or PPS43's....
    For the heavy class in Finnish Brutality, I think I'd go with a Para FAL with a Primary Arms 3X microprism on a DSA mount......or a Perun X17 with the PA 3x microprism.

Also, regardless of discipline, if either of you are having issues, these will magnify for lesser able or practiced shooters. • @sethfg
      @sethfg 5 місяців тому

      I feel it is strange to think “average” shooters would somehow translate into more useful information. They wouldn’t shoot as well. That is all we would learn. Higher skills, more training should, I would think make the pluses or minuses be easier to identify. Especially due to more consistent shooting.
      I do some archery. If I haven’t practiced in a while I still shoot well enough but I am way less consistent. Also fatigue sets in quicker. Without those things effecting these guys as much I’d assume we get -more- reliable comparisons.
      Besides military rifles are meant to be used by people who train with them. I can’t think of any value to be added by a noob.
      Unless it was ease of use. In which case I suppose we would learn which gun to buy if we were suddenly going to war and planned on just lining people up and handing them out.

    I appreciate your point at the end. I want to see what the absolute maximum performance of a weapon system by high end shooters. I really don't like to consider myself a "professional shooter" but I was an infantryman, and now I work in nuclear security where I'm paid to patrol with a rifle. Both have a level of competitiveness around our range scores and times on the ranges that involve running and clearing areas. I want a 1moa rifle to train with because I want to eliminate as many variables as possible so I knew every flyer in my grouping is due to something I am doing and can improved on. It's the same mind set of all the other top end shooters at my job. It's what's allowed to me to improve my shooting proficiency as quickly as possible because I was never thrown off by mechanical issues disguising themselves as technique issues when I was doing everything right. The other biggest driver of performance has been physical fitness. The fattest I've been was also the least accurate I've ever been. If your body is in shape every aspect of marksmanship will be easier to achieve.

    Good video!
    Your little talk of the "average person shooting averagely"-thing got me thinking though... It *would* be nice to see... in the form of something like following regular Schmoe on their way to physical fitness, only this one would focus mostly on firearms & shooting proficiency :)
    Because there, people from Column A get to see their average shooter maybe shooting a variety of guns, if nothing else to find out what works for them (great point to have a gun & gear review or two), and people from Column B would eventually (hopefully!) get to see their high-skill, low-drag shooter cleaning courses and scoring magnificent hits (great point to have a second review of the stuff from the earlier reviews, to talk about the differences and new perspectives) :)
    I know what people are gonna reply to me: "Why don't *you* go do it?"
    It's a fair question, but I'm hindered by two facts, namely, I'm a lazy-ass nerd with shaky hands who flinch at loud noises and have a hard time seeing even a short, very enjoyable video game to the end without losing focus and wanting to do something else, and the second hindrance being that I live in a country where you may only have a gun (as a civilian) if you actively shoot with a club (none around here and I don't have a car) or if you're a hunter (I'm a vegetarian) ^^;

    That trigger on Calvin's AUG doesn't look stock, but I might be mistaken from the low quality picture used. It's such a pain to get one here and some remove the drop safe feature. It doesn't matter much though. As much as I watched russell aka sinistral rifleman, skills around the stages matter the most besides stamina and conserving energy.

    Well said in the conclusion; why strive for mediocrity.
    I would love to see in addition to practical accuracy and the speedway, Josh run some of these historic pieces in close to mid range positional shooting, like those of finish brutality. Not as elaborate of course, but enough to showcase what these old warhorses are capable of. I think it would contribute greatly to the overall review of each rifle.

    Regarding the commenter you mentioned. His viewpoint is the direct apposite of what you need for reviewing the performance of a firearm. I want scientific data, and removing the increased randomness of a mediocre trained shooter and replacing it with the consistency of a well trained shooter leads to a better view of the actual firearm. The only way to be better would be to take all the shots off of a rest, but that would be boring and not entertaining. Henry is consistent and provides an excellent baseline for these reviews.

    36:20 up to a point. There is an obvious value in displaying the full potential of a gun, but the potential when interacting with a low skill individual is also a vluable data, and sometime a pretty different one.
    P.S. no comment on Fabian's set up?
