I got my iphone 13 pro max last week and took it into Magic Kingdom on Monday! Really impressed with everything about it! The colors and clarity are amazing! It is a little top heavy but better than carrying round a big bulky camera! Enjoy Michael!
Thank you for this! You’ve def made me more excited for my 13 coming in a few weeks! How great for you to be able to use that phone vs a large camera! The shots were impressive 😃👏
An interesting video, not sure if you'll read this or reply but given that it's a tech review I have some questions and comments. Any chance of more info on specifically which focal length your using the 16-35mm at throughout each part of the video? When you get to the photos around 4:35, you say they're mostly unedited which would lead me to assume they're SOOC RAWs, is this the case? The Sony shots just look like underexposed RAWs for instance while the iPhone shots look like they've had in "camera" processing. Then when you follow on with some direct video comparisons in dark light are they both in manual using the same settings or is it a demo of how well the auto settings are working? Because at that point the iPhone looks underexposed but if they're using the same settings I wouldn't understand why this would be the case. Is the cinematic mode on iPhone artificially creating the shallow depth of field? With your Sony lens being capable of 2.8 I believe perhaps a better comparison here would be 35mm at 2.8 to give a touch more compression, as I'm not sure shooting wide is a fair comparison. The shallow DoF looks pretty clumsy on the iPhone to me personally, especially around 7:15, especially when you compare it to the DoF on the Sony in the comparison video that follows. As the light becomes more challenging in the evening the iPhone really pales in comparison IMO, the lack of clarity, micro contrast and image quality just becomes so apparent. I think overall the iPhone is an incredible device when you consider its size, but it's easy to be fooled by "SOOC" jpegs on the iPhone and the cinematic mode (which doesn't come close to the bokeh and sharpness of the camera IMO). I know that comparing a purpose built camera setup with a phone might be unfair, but since that's what the vid is geared towards these are my thoughts. (Also you'd without a doubt need a mic for the iPhone, but in fairness audio is a different discussion completely)
Thank you! As a professional photographer, I came to bring up the same topic. Want to have more of a blurred background? Lower your f/stop. If you want a tech review to be taken seriously, I want to know the f/stop, shutter speed and iso. THEN compare it to the iphone.
Iphone 13 wins overall for photos it looks like. Video on the other hand i see why cinematic is a wonderful feature but the sony looked much better in most side by side comparisons from what i see. Thanks for sharing
Love my new iPhone13 pro max - already my vlogs are taking on a whole new pizazz- can’t wait till we bring it on our trip to WDW for our January vacation- this got me pumped about what I can expect it will look like! I am now truly considering getting a jib & mic for it though to upgrade the sound & hand holding.
The iPhone looks in certain spots, and the Sony looks better in others. The cinematic mode almost looks powdery to me. That's the best way I can describe it. Not bad, but the dark parts aren't as crisp in cinematic mode, and it seems to change the frame rate. I can definitely understand carrying around the smaller package. I dunno, I like Sony better on some things and the iPhone on others. The Sony with the microphone sounds much better, but I know that's obvious.
Sony is crisper and the iPhone has noticeable halo effect. Audio is much better on the Sony. But I still think the iPhone is very impressive. Just picked up my 13 pro max last week too.
I still liked the Sony for when it was focused on you, unless you can play around with the blacks a bit on the Iphone. I prefer those darker crisp darks. But otherwise it looks like a good all around camera!!
Dear @Michael Kay, Thanks for your comparison, it helped me a lot! Now I'm sure, I won't sell my Sony a6000 + Sony 35mm f/1.8 FE for buy an iPhone 13 Pro, BUT next to it I will buy the iPhone 13 Pro, so I could make quit good photos at any time, but I will have the opportunity to shoot color dept and detailed pics with smooth bokeh. This three thing what I misses from iPhone compared to Sony camera. BUT for a phone, that quality is still impressive! :) So thanks!
The iPhone is amazingly good, but the cinematic setting gives blur around the sides of the head (worse if glasses on) so for me would be somewhat unusable currently unfortunately. Low light there’s no comparison on video. But that’s physics of the massive sensor size difference. These phones now do an amazing job at low light photos though (pioneered by Google). Would be good to see it vs your ZV1 if you still have that. Michael becomes like Camera Conspiracies in this video😂 Good review,
with a few exceptions, were all the examples using the iPhone front camera? I would have had a hard time not seeing myself in the display to make sure I was in frame.
Michael I think a great video would be how to do Disney photography from your iPhone. Kind of do a video on how to change exposure change aperture and get the better quality picture. Most of us only take our cell phones and would love to have a guide to help us take better quality photos while in the parks.
OK. Just gonna put this out there. I've seen a lot of people complain about the ghosting/flaring issue on the 13 pro max. But from this footage and several others it doesn't seem to be that bad....
Dude you can't compare macro mode on the iPhone to a non macro lens of a real camera. This whole video while fun in concept had a lot of flaws. I say this as a pro photographer and videographer.
An iphone will always seem better to someone who doesn't know how to properly use a professional camera. It's quick, easy, gives decent results and is cheaper when it comes to actually having professional equipment. However, you cannot compare quality when the professional camera is being used with the proper settings.
Correct. Like using an actual macro lens or using correct exposure comp, aperture, etc. Also if you view photos at 100% zoom, phones always fall apart. You can't print anything larger than 5 by 7 without noise issues.
You didn't even edit the photos properly. The iPhone was probably jpg already "edited well" by Apples technology while the Sony barely was touched. The advantage a real camera has is apertures, sensor size and ability to really push Raw files to allow highlight recovery, shadow recovery, dynamic range, etc. There is a reason pros use the bigger gear and it's not for concenience.
Stabilization aside, the Sony has better video quality in nearly every situation. Better lighting, better sharpness, realistic depth of field. The iPhone definitely has some good pictures. Cinematic mode looked like garbage.
This is mind blowing! I think if you hadn’t put the names of each clip on the screen, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference on most of them.
Great comparison video! The editing was awesome! The Sony seemed better in low light, but otherwise they are very comparable!! Getting the iPhone 13 as soon as I’m home from the 50th!
Mike!! This video is excellent. I’m excited to use my new phone to blog but that front camera still is rough in the lower light. How did you pull it off by filming with the back facing camera and keeping yourself positioned best in frame without seeing the display?
Awesome split screen comparison. Thanks for that. The video quality is solid on both cameras. I do feel the sound quality is better on the camera vs. the iPhone. That was my big difference/observation. Keep up the great work and thanks for all you do.
The iPhone footage may look OK on a small smartphone camera but on my 24" display, it doesn't look that good, especially that cinematic mode, it looks washed out. And I am not talking about the background but the foreground. It looks hazy. In low light the images look really unnatural and over processed. This video confirms what I have seem on my wife's new iPhone 13 pro which lead me to search on this topic. In a pinch and for social media, the iPhone 13 footage is acceptable. But I think I will stick to my mirrorless cameras for now. Oh, and I don't use full frame. I only use APS-C cameras but I am able to see the difference in low light even with the kit lens. For daytime photography and video, the iPhone is a great tool in certain situations. Once you get into fast action such as school sports, school recitals, etc., in my experience, the camera will always produce better results, especially if it is for large screen viewing.
Just got the 13 pro max set up yesterday. Can't wait to test it live streaming this evening! Great side by side with the Sony. Amazing what can be done now on an Iphone with such a tiny sensor and knowing the background blur is all done digitally... Cinema mode is just getting started. It is still limited to 1080p 30 frames. Can't wait till the get up to 4k 60frames. Great vid Mike!
Great video again! The iPhone video and photos have gotten so good. I still think selfie mode looks better on your Sony with less noise in low light and the audio was better with the dedicated mic, but the iPhone is really producing some great content.
Not exactly an apples to apples comparison. The intention of the A7C/pro cameras is to give you a flat image that you can color correct and massage in post production. So it just isn't going to look as good straight out of the camera as the iPhone will. The iPhone is doing all of that work, and more, for you. That said, I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max as well and its fantastic, but it won't be taking over for my camera, even just for stills, any time soon.
I upgraded from 11 Pro Max to 13 Pro Max this video made me feel good about my decision. Mine arrives soon. Thank you for this comparison it was very impressive. Though the audio lacks for the iPhone unfortunately guessing a mic for it will have to do. Thanks again. :)
This was a fantastic comparison, I think the iPhone outperformed the Sony overall, maybe except in the toy story queue, and the fact that you lose some of the zoom quality with the front facing, but overall extremely impressive!!! 👏👏👏
The iPhone footage looks incredible for a phone - Although the quality of the cinematic mode seams not great (compared to the Sony). Olove the Sony wide angle lens and I think it is a lot better in low light - However the iPhone 13 looks great too.. Keep the Sony for the best quality and use the iPhone as a B camera
I've been thinking about getting a Sony A7III. I got a iPhone 13 Pro (not max) at launch. And the camera is amazing! Think I'll hold off for a while longer on a newer full size camera.
The photos and videos were cris and clean. The only thing that suffers from a distance is picking up volume. When you were at a distance from the phone it was difficult to hear you. It tends to be an issue with fireworks unless you are near a speaker.
I was just thinking about getting iPhone 13!! I really like how the 12 camera is set up though, But iPhone 13 Pro is similar. Think I’ll treat myself to that one!
Apple is always about putting everything in one hand. And I think they are really doing it. The Sony had better video but the photos on the iPhone are ridiculous! Thanks again Mike!
Love it Mickael you do great photography. You should start working for Apple. Mickael I just what to tell you, you take great video and pictures. They are so entertaining.
So without a doubt the new iPhone pictures and video are way better and more clear in my opinion. Now the audio is much better with your Sony but everything else is better with the iPhone I will say I’m not a fan of the cinematic where the backgrounds blurred out and you’re very clear
The iPhone 13 cameras are much better but its hard to compare a full frame sensor and a 2.8 g-master against it. What I noticed from your video is that the phones "night mode" is cranking the ISO up and making the image more grainy. Also trying to get that same bokah from the g-master is tuff with a 2.8 if you dont have it opened up that far. Thanks for posting.
The iPhone's nice but I still think the Sony has a better quality picture you look blown out in the iPhone video. In the Sony video your skin tone is natural. that could be the vibrant setting though
Awesome! Thank you for sharing! Is there and specific settings you want to share? Thanks again and Happy New Year!! 👍🥳
I got my iphone 13 pro max last week and took it into Magic Kingdom on Monday! Really impressed with everything about it! The colors and clarity are amazing! It is a little top heavy but better than carrying round a big bulky camera! Enjoy Michael!
I’m definitely sold on the iPhone 13 Pro Max now! Thank you for this!!
Thank you for this! You’ve def made me more excited for my 13 coming in a few weeks! How great for you to be able to use that phone vs a large camera! The shots were impressive 😃👏
The picture stability on the iPhone is very impressive!
Thanks for sharing Michael! I am really impressed with the quality the cell phone camera provides. I’m excited to get it for my next Disney trip 😊
The iPhone is SO impressive!! The sound though wasn’t quite at good as the Sony with the mic.

Great job on this comparo video Michael!!
The photos from the iPhone look amazing! 🤩

We orders the IPhone 13 Pros this weekend! Can’t wait to get ours! So impressive
I still liked the Sony for when it was focused on you, unless you can play around with the blacks a bit on the Iphone. I prefer those darker crisp darks. But otherwise it looks like a good all around camera!!
Perfect music for this video!
Dear @Michael Kay,
Thanks for your comparison, it helped me a lot!

If you like the Bokeh a lot, you should try the Sony 20mm F1.8. vs the F2.8 on the GM.
The iPhone is amazingly good, but the cinematic setting gives blur around the sides of the head (worse if glasses on) so for me would be somewhat unusable currently unfortunately.

Two short questions. 1. Did you just use the on board mics to test? 2. Is the iPhone 13 on a gimbal or?

Michael, great shirt. Big Thunder is my favorite mountain. I'm looking pretty good on you, Mike. The working out is helping!
I have an xs max so it might be time to upgrade. great pics
I would think this would be a game changer as far as ease of carrying ,getting around
Well done.

Thank you very much! Super useful information.

The camera is better inside. The phone is better outside
I agree with everyone.. great video Mike.. you convinced me to get the iPhone 13.
Thanks for the video
Picture wise, I phone 13 definitely wins. Vlog wise though, I kind of like the Sony a bit more.
What a cool video, thanks for putting this together! Very impressive showing by the iPhone!
Picture quality iPhone win for me, mic quality the Sony won.
You are an amazing photographer Michael.
Wow, that iphone camera is incredible. Thanks for the info.
100% agree, my thoughts exactly. Both look great, but completely different results for different purposes IMO.
Sony also isn't know for great video quality except the A7S series. Nikon Z6 or Panasonic GH5 would be better comparisons.
Hi Michael! Thank you so much for this video! I tend to use my cell for quick, pick up shots!!! I’m thinking…😆😆
Hi Michael.Thank you for the video,I can’t wait to get my Iphone 13 pro max,so looking forward to it.Picture quality and light looks phenomenal.
Sony
I'm getting it
I upgraded from 11 Pro Max to 13 Pro Max this video made me feel good about my decision. Mine arrives soon. Thank you for this comparison it was very impressive. Though the audio lacks for the iPhone unfortunately guessing a mic for it will have to do. Thanks again. :)

Watching commercial not my favourite

I used to have the 16-35 GM lens and sold it and went w/ the 14mm GM lens. Way lighter and way smaller.
The iPhone 13 did much better than I thought it would. Better than the Sony in many cases. Things are definitely changing. Good video!
Amazing
Watching always😀👍🇺🇸❤️🙏
Wow this was so interesting! I definitely prefer the iPhone except on cinematic mode because it was very blurry and it was very dark inside.
No question that the sony is way better, please dont ever consider filming with a phone.
The Sony is better in darker settings…
If the 13 can do better in most situations then a Sony I’m going to stop ✋🏼 looking into the Sony and just figure out the voice . Great video
So without a doubt the new iPhone pictures and video are way better and more clear in my opinion.
Now the audio is much better with your Sony but everything else is better with the iPhone
I will say I’m not a fan of the cinematic where the backgrounds blurred out and you’re very clear
First! Have a great day! 🎉
The iPhone 13 cameras are much better but its hard to compare a full frame sensor and a 2.8 g-master against it. Also trying to get that same bokah from the g-master is tuff with a 2.8 if you dont have it opened up that far. Thanks for posting.
Also an f/2.8 isn't going to give a ton of bokeh on a wide angle lens unless you're at the minimum focusing distance.
iPhone. Clear pix and ability to change faster.
Why do you always have your phone on night shift really diminishes the contrast of that amazing screen!
It's incredible what they're cramming into phones these days.
The iPhone 13 pro max looks like a better optics’s camera than your Sony all around better….🤣😄😄😁😆
Because that A7C is the cheapest full frame camera Sony makes..its not a great camera to compare to a flagship phone.
The iPhone's nice but I still think the Sony has a better quality picture you look blown out in the iPhone video. In the Sony video your skin tone is natural. that could be the vibrant setting though
Wow…huge difference
The 13 is way better
iPhone clearly won in the pictures and I think it did great in the majority of filming
