    As an appliance technician myself you did an outstanding job, but just like the rest in the comment section have mentioned it is far easier to go through the front. I only post this comment in hopes that others looking for a solution to this problem can have the best information available. UA-cam (Electrolux Electric Dryer Replace Heating Element P#137114000) Again,
    The Part Number is important to find the Heating element, compare prices online use Amazon or eBay. but before you order any parts check the obvious first!
    1) Electrical Current, you need 240Volts.
    the dryer CAN run with just 120volts since that's the power the motor needs, the heater is what needs the 240V.
    2) check the heating element for continuity, also check if its "Grounded" sometimes when grounded it works but stops due to the board detecting something is off.
    3) check your thermostats.
    4) and last but not least CHECK YOUR EXHAUST VENT. if it goes to the roof most likely its clogged up and the poor dryer cannot breath properly so it overheats.
    besides that if you've read everything so far on here the rest is up to you and google google google for the right answers how to test parts. Your not paying a technician to do the job for trying to save a buck, so appreciate the free information others give you. Support your local appliance technicians! if you can't do it, call a tech who is honest reliable and friendly! Word to mouth is the best advertisement!
    Greetings from San Antonio!

    You have to be the most patient and even tempered person in the world !!!!!! I watched your video and it helped me diagnose the heating element problem and i attempted to repair it myself. OMG what a mess this turned into....I threw tools and I almost got divorced during this attempt as well......I would love to meet and greet the engineer that designed this dryer. Could he have put a very common part in a harder to get to place....the answer is NO!!!!! there are hidden screws and bolts that no human with a spine can possibly get to......The life expectancy of these heating elements is about two years....the part is about 120.00 bucks. After three hours of work and some marriage counseling and paint for the walls that i scratched up. I gave up and called a repairman and he finished the job for me and put all the parts back where they belonged and charged me 79 bucks labor.......The moral of the story is that calling the repairman cost me 200 bucks and my attempt cost me with counseling about 2,000.00 dollars. I am not the same man now that i was before this attempted repair. I do wish that the engineer that hid this heating element so well, and made it way to difficult to get to......I hope that he spends the rest of his life having to repair what he engineered !!!!!!!!! I now shake badly and i stutter as well, I am missing some tools that i believe may be inside the dryer somewhere. I broke a window with a tool as well.....GOOD LUCK TO ALL.....

    Matt, thank you so much! My dryer stopped working on Thursday! I kept seeing the error e64 code. I came here for help and you gave me just that! Your video was the best hands down! I purchased the heating element from Amazon because it would get here the quickest. It was only $39.99. I received it today and just finished helping to put it on. It was soooo easy. Didn't take long at all! We appreciate you doing this video and helping to save so much money!

    Thank you Matt, my dryer is an Electrolux, roughly 2 years old. I kind of wondered if I had a problem to begin with when I bought it. It didn't seem to dry really well like I expected an Electrolux to do. I do have an error code of E64 that just started last night, so I went on Amazon and ordered one for around $90. I bought the extended warranty for an additional 2 years for around $7, that should put me right around the time to replace it again, lol.
    My dryer is the EIED50LIWO. I will try to access it from the front and see how that goes. I will also check out your other video on cleaning out behind the lint trap to make sure there is no problem there.
    Thanks again for your video, very informative.

    Firstly, thank you to Matt Spencer and all the other good people out there that take the time to make videos like this.
    So glad I read the comments as well as watched the video as my dryer is fitted and to have done this repair from the rear of the unit would have meant dismantling my entire utility room.
    This said I was working blind going in from the front. However, I was able to get front panel off without any problems. The major challenge is the one screw that attaches the heating element casing at the rear. This is the one at 8:02 on the video. To get to this I also removed the huge plastic front that is located behind front panel. It might be possible to get to the screw without but even with this out of the way it is still a real pig to get to. I used a socket set ratchet with a philips head bit as space will not permit a screwdriver. This means lots of 1/8 turns (if you are lucky) and even more cussing. Trust me when I say while you are doing this you'll be wondering how the hell you will ever get it back in. Eventually free I labeled the wires before disconnecting and finally removed the culprit of Error code E-64. My element looked identical to the one shown on the video. It is obviously a design flaw.
    Wires reconnected it was time for "The Screw" . In fact the worse bit of this was lining up the holes as you are working blind. Once I had it in place the screw went in a lot better than it came out. The rest went together fine. As I had stripped down more than I had expected to I was worried about putting the right screw in right place and I'd suggest to anyone doing this to make notes. I wish I had!
    Job done and it's again working fine. I figure this must be a $400+ repair so I'm delighted at my saving. On that note I purchased my part (new) on ebay for around $78.
    Good luck to the next guy/gal taking this job on.

    I work for an appliance service/parts company, not a tech myself but am very familiar with what E64 means. The heater is screwed, most likely. This guy did a thorough job of repair, but this video would have been a job of 30 minutes tops WITHOUT EDITING if he was like any other repair technician who knew his stuff and just grabbed the part off the shelf like ours do because that heater is so common. Unless the thermisters/stats were damaged, which is almost never the case with this problem of not heating with Elux, excellent tutorial.

    • @apexnine

      In most cases there is no need to replace the thermo or fuse then with E64? It be great to only buy the element. Is there potential for damage to occur if using old thermo and fuse if they were part of the E64 problem?

  • @richardpaynter8019
    @richardpaynter8019 8 років тому +12

    yes i did exaggerate a bit for some humor.......however the story is true and a repairman came and replaced the element is 15 minutes he was astonished that I had tried to replace the element by taking the back off of the dryer, It turns out the repair is made by removing the front of the dryer and it is a snap, He ask me why in the world i went through the back of the dryer and I explained that i had viewed a you tube video. I watched him go through the front and finish in 15 minutes and then it took him another 30 minutes to replace the back and the mess i had made. Trust me here that the proper way to replace a heating element is by removing the front of the dryer and the drum and this reveals the element quickly

  • @Sturm68
    @Sturm68 6 років тому

    I see a bunch of comments about how he did it wrong by going through the back but I don't see anything about HOW to get in through the front. I've taken mine apart several times now and I've always taken off the back. The only way I can see to go in through the front is to remove the screws in the lint filter area, but I think they are welded in on my dryer. Thanks, Matt, for helping out your average Joe that is NOT an appliance professional..

    Thanks for the video! I had the error code and replaced the element by following your instructions! I preferred this video rather than the one from the front, because this one looked easier. Other people say otherwise, so I guess I'll try watching the front repair one again if it happens again, but the front repair looked like more steps and stuff to take out, removing the drum, etc.. Anyway, thank you!

    Thanks Matt. I am so NOT appliance savvy. I had E64 error code. No time to be at home during the day for a repair guy - I WORK- at a job- to support my family- and I am a woman with no husband !!! Yes, so it took awhile - and I saw where some said to go by way of the front. Each way looks as tough as the other. I did it Matt's way. Granted I had no way of testing the wiring, I just hoped I had the same problem. Watched the video, ordered the part, waited for it to arrive, then I took to fixing it. And yes, my heating element looked exactly like Matt's. So maybe I got lucky, in any case, my dryer now works. Oh - and my dryer is stacked on top of my Electrolux washer. Slid them out together - took the opportunity to clean and vacuum the area - did not remove the dryer from the washer - just fixed it from behind while it set atop the washer. And yes you get that "burn" smell and smoke with a new heating element -just like when you get a new hair dryer. It goes away in a couple of minutes. And let me say that I watched his other video about opening up the vent area up front and vacuuming it out for prevention - wow - 3 inches of lint! And please, no lectures from repair people; I like folks like Matt who want to help out people like me.

    Great video! Went down and got the part from the only local appliance parts place for $126 including tax. Took about an hour to do. Recommend that people use labeled ziploc bags for the screws from each phase of the repair. Total time was about an hour, but I accidently put the back on without that grey plastic piece that protects the screws from falling down into the body while you're connecting the pig tail so I had to remove it and put it back on.

    This happened to my Electrolux after less than 2 years. I was told by my uncle who repaired it (who is an appliance repairman) that it was a design flaw and would probably happen again in a couple of years (and, what do you know a year and a half later it did and that's how I found your video). He said (and I will probably not explain this exactly right) that as the dryer runs the metal on this element gets hot and contracts and the coils will touch the side of the cylinder and that will cause the dryer to stop. The reason the dryer will start back up after a few moments is that the metal expands back as it cools and the coils no longer touch the side of the cylinder, and that expand and contract process just continues until you replace the faulty unit.

    I just did this repair from the rear. I had a screw in the rear air cover besides the three in the drum and the one on the lower left that goes in at an angle. There is a screw right above the heating element that screws into the air cover from the inside. I notices in your video that screw wasn't there but the hole in the cover and the hole in the back panel were there. Like your dryer had been apart before and the screw wasn't replaced.
    I got it out after i tilted the heater element to it's side. I would not come out the back of the dryer until the screw was removed and the air cover set aside. That screw took about 30 minutes to get out by itself and impossible until the heater element and brackets were turned on their side. Other than that there were no problems and the dryer is fixed and working correctly.

    I had this happen with my Electrolux dryer. I had E64 trouble code. Was a defective heating element. It cost me $624 and two service calls. The dryer was less than 3 years old. I recommend using "normal heat setting". "high heat" or "towel setting" uses more energy and burns element out faster. It uses less energy for dryer to run longer and use less heat.

    As a Servicer of appliances, let me tell all you watching this that if this guys dryer is only 2 years old and it created the kind of heat to melt the element board like that, then I can guarantee you that the lint screen is plugged with lanolin from dryer sheets, or the venting is blocked in some other way. CHECK YOUR LINT SCREENS PEOPLE! RUN WATER OVER THEM TO SEE IF IT RUNS THROUGH OR STANDS UP!

    I suspect this is the same issue with my moms dryer since it has the same error code, my question is when searching for the part, I see some say Genuine replacement part, if its the same part wouldn't there be a chance of the same thing happening again using their crappy quality parts? Did they ever release an updated heating element to rectify this issue? Or perhaps a 3rd party part that exceeds OEM specs?

    I might need some help. I have a frigidaire dryer but they're practically built exactly the same. I replaced the very same part, identical model number as the one my dryer cane with. I finish the job putting the dryer back together and now when I dry something there's a sort of burning smell. Not exactly sure why that is but perhaps it's the new cylindrical heating element getting warmed up? The coils on the old one had gotten quite black, while the new ones are still somewhat shiny. I'm going to put some clothes in and hope nothing catches fire and I'll be looking out for another "Call for service" thing on the display to show up in case there's a different issue. However when I hold the pause and cancel button for a few seconds it still says E64. In the manual it says it will display the last error code, but not sure if it still displays it even after the fix.

    good video, but you did cause yourself, a ton of extra work by going through the back of the machine. You should have went through the front of the machine, which is how it is designed to be worked on.

    This guy got the problem fixed, however, very lucky. The dryer was taken apart from the back, problem is .....most dryers of this type, if taken apart from the back there are supports that will fall and then you have bigger problems. This dryer is designed to be taken apart from the front. People, I'm a professional, please don't follow the advice of some smo joe .......this guy really doesn't know what he is doing and can create bigger problems for you

    • @mtspencer

      +Jim Haggard Nope, I'm not a professional appliance repair technician as you must be. Yes, fixing anything yourself has risks. Each individual must weigh the risk. If there's a chance of saving hundreds of dollars by not calling a repair man, maybe that's worth the risk for people. It is for me. Yes there's also a chance something else could get broken causing a more expensive repair, but I've not seen any complaints of anybody having their "supports fall" as you indicate.

    • @jimhaggard4721
      @jimhaggard4721 8 років тому +1

      All I was simply saying is it too many people on the internet believe everything they see. in this lawsuit happy society that we live in you are putting yourself at risk. there are no disclaimers on your video or through UA-cam. As a professional repair technician I go in behind many do-it-yourselfers that have royally screwed up their machine by following someone that is not a professional technician showing them how to do a repair. however, the repair that you showed on your video you did take your dryer apart incorrectly. it is to be dismantled from the front. which gives you easier access to the element in which you replaced and easier to diagnose the problem

    • @dwolcot15
      @dwolcot15 8 років тому +3

      +Jim Haggard If those flimsy ass pieces of sheet metal are what support this dryer then this thing is truly a POS and any other dryer made like that. I don't buy your claims..... Maybe that's why the "pro's" charge so much and then ultimately end up doing the same method repair saving themselves some time.
      Got this same issue on mine and will be attempting this same repair. Don't get upset that UA-cam is saving a bunch of DIY'ers a bunch of money. Maybe you should make your own video then.

    • @earlwilliamson5741
      @earlwilliamson5741 8 років тому +4

      Jim Haggard, is correct. Modern dryers are designed to be repaired from the front, especially ones from front load sets. Yes, in the case of this video it worked out where there wasn't a big problem from doing it from the back of the unit, but on some other dryers it can very well cause a huge amount of problems by having supports falling.
      But the thing I will say, by going through the back on a unit like this you are adding a ton of extra work. It's a lot easier to access everything from the front, and you don't have to take nearly as much apart.

    Good Video here Matt!
    I accessed my heater through the front, I'm sure it's easier with the drum completely removed. But good to know it can be accessed through the rear also.
    Big question for ya, our "perfect steam" has been perfectly useless since day 1. It sputters water out, so any article just gets big wet spots instead of misted.
    Is this how yours is? I am trying to troubleshoot if it is the nozzle or the water valve assembly. It's not because we have hard water either, the thing has sputtered the water out since day 1. Any feedback will be appreciated.

    • @mtspencer
      @mtspencer  9 років тому +1

      Hi thanks for the comment, I didn't even attempt to remove the drum itself but maybe that is easier. When I originally did the video I was just thinking I was going to look at the heater coils I didn't expect them to actually be burnt out already.
      As for your steam, I think we've probably only used it twice since and I don't remember any wet spots on the clothes, but that was over a year ago now. Good luck!

      +lori haller Have you made sure your dryer vent is clean and clear? I bought one of these www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014CN8Y8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0014CN8Y8&linkCode=as2&tag=mtsyoutube-20&linkId=C42WZGKMMMFALHQS and try to clean the dryer vent every year or two. Depending on how it is routed there could be areas that get very clogged.
      Also, you should look at this video ua-cam.com/video/EtH0HXRdU9Q/v-deo.html and make sure its not clogged up inside your dryer. Ours seems to get buildup every few months.

      Thanks for the feedback - next time I'll take it apart from the front. I suppose its kind of like I pulled the engine to change the spark plugs lol. It can be done, just takes longer. It was still definitely less expensive than hiring someone.

    • @mtspencer

      +shawn yarborough The only thing I can suggest would be to double check all the wiring to the heater, and all the thermal fuses and thermostats. Take a look at the parts diagram and/or wiring diagram to make sure you've found them all. The thermal fuses are one-time blown, so if they blow you must purchase a new one.

      Collective Soles If a fuse blows, it needs to be replaced, but you really need to try to figure out why it blew (possibly a clogged or restricted dryer vent).

    Glad I could help! Be sure to check out my other video on cleaning out underneath the lint trap vent: ua-cam.com/video/EtH0HXRdU9Q/v-deo.html I found that completely clogged on ours and I'm pretty sure that contributed to the heating element going out!

    • @jimhaggard4721
      @jimhaggard4721 8 років тому

      Your lint trap had nothing to do with your element failure

    • @mtspencer
      @mtspencer  8 років тому

      +Jim Haggard What do you suggest the failure was caused by then? Obviously there's lots of people having this issue. A heating element will fail either due to faulty part or else overheating. A likely cause of overheating would be poor air circulation, which often times would be caused by a clogged lint trap. Lint gets all clogged up behind my lint trap, and regularly cleaning it out keeps my dryer working efficiently. Cleaning out lint can never hurt anything, and could possibly prevent a failure.

    • @jimhaggard4721
      @jimhaggard4721 8 років тому

      There is where you are wrong. the dryer will only overheat due to the fact that the high limit and limit thermostat stick in a closed position allowing there to be constant electricity to the heater element. a clogged lint trap will give you poor air circulation there for creating longer dry time periods. the cause of the failure of the element, is simply because you have a coiled wired element that heats up cools down repetitively. eventually causing the element to stretch out at which point one of two things will happen. first and most common is the element will have a weak spot and break. secondly it can become sagging and ground out on the metal cavity in which it sits. therefore the e64 error code will occur

    • @mtspencer
      @mtspencer  8 років тому

      +Jim Haggard Thanks for the info - that's definitely helpful! So is the heating element just wearing out from normal usage? Ours dryer was only 2 years old and we've never had a heating element go out before (although we've mostly had gas dryers in the past).

    • @jimhaggard4721

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have a question - how long is your vent pipe from your dryer to the outside baffle? The reason I ask because if it's long I wondered if it could have an affect on the life of the heater? My unit is about 2 years old and that seems like you should get more life out of the heater unless there could be an issue causing a premature failure. Thanks

    • @mtspencer
      @mtspencer  9 років тому

      Hi - Our dyer vent is about 10 ft long. We did have some issues with lint clogging the outside baffle a bit and I had been cleaning it regularly, however there is a spot inside the dryer behind the lint trap that fills up with lint on our dryer. Just before the heating element went out I found it was completely clogged - see my video here that shows what I'm talking about. ua-cam.com/video/EtH0HXRdU9Q/v-deo.html
