I just saw recently in a Canadian home-depot a new mix, sunshine mix #4 by sungro. Make sure to pick the coco core bag since they have another product with similar looking bag. It’s mostly made of coco - coir and perlite. It’s about $20 for a bag. I bought a bag to try stem propagation.
The mix provide a good aeration and drainage.

I just took on two fiddle figs they’re leggy with just a few yellowing leaves. They’re in bags 😫
These really need a lot of tlc. They’re a little over 7 feet tall. I have them in the shade because I understand they burn easily.
Should I have them in sun? Thanks

RK great common sense given on this topic. I'm lucky enough to live in a Mediterranean climate in Australia and my potted figs do well. I have just pruned fig tree and roots and I found that most of the roots were circled around the outside of the pot and not too many towards the centre. The tree is in a square terracotta coloured plastic pot about 55 litres.👍

Would you suggest adding more perlite to Miracle Gro indoor potting mix or would fine bark chips be better? The ingredients of the Miracle-Gro mix are sphagnum peat moss, coir and perlite but it doesn't give the percentages.

@rkfigs figs I think I will add a small bit of perlite. I usually mix fine bark and perite in my soils. Yucca, Dumb Cane, ZZ and a lot of others always do great. I've always planted figs in ordinary peat based potting soil for the last 10 years and they've done great, however peat breaks down pretty quick. I normally don't buy Miracle-Gro potting soil because of the added fertilizer. I tried it this time because of the low price and their claim of being less prone to gnats. I did some research and see that some say not to put anything very chunky in the soil because it's hard on the Fig roots, but others say that it works great to use very small pieces of bark. I don't like adding much perlite because it's so light, makes its way to the top and ends up not stabilizing the plant as firm as I like.
I have both of them here along with practically every other soil additive, so that got me wondering which would be best. Thanks.
