This was such a satisfying and enjoyable video. Here in Zone 10a Australia, our Winter solstice comes around June 20. My fig trees will not need root pruning yet as they are still young, but I will give them a slight haircut. Thank you!

@jimk6862 I have a good experience with grow bags so far. I am hoping of longer growing periods in them without root prunings. One day I will make a comparison video of grow bags vs plastic containers.

Excellent video! Have you ever gotten figs from that Yolo Bypass? I have one that is in its 3rd year, it is about 8 feet tall and super healthy but has never grown any figs.
Thanks. I made a tasting video review last week that needs to be edited, and will make one again today or tomorrow. This variety in my conditions reacts similarly as campaniere to excess media moisture, likes to split and flavor is water down bland, so I would assume that in ground would perform much better. Or maybe needs more time, it is also three years old. However, I was able to dry out media in the first video, and one fig was of much better quality.
I love all your videos, they are helpful, but on this one I think you have to use a bigger stick to compress potting mix around the bag a little harder otherwise the bag will be wrinkles in the end of the growing season ❤
Hello, thanks for the comment. The media that I was using in this video was quite dry and granular, it settled right away with no air pockets around a pretty straight sides of the root ball. I've used a pointy tool to show a potential need to use it if roots were more exposed to settle the media. Tapping and shaking the bag is usually what is needed. Also, I was rushing to make a video, I am normally much more careful and detailed when up potting.

Thanks neighbor. Trees are in shelter now, and they will begin growing roots indoor. By the time they go outside in May, roots will be anchored in this new container somewhat. In orchard, they are all secured by a wire trellis in rows. It is a must for high winds we have occasionally. The video I was referring to is "Fig Trees In Containers Potting Mix''.

Up Potting from 5 to 7 gal., would you expect more production next season?
I would think so. Most of my trees were hard pruned last winter to make them smaller. Many were left without branches, only trunk, so on this year growth I am expecting fruiting branches. But many will be pruned hard even more, for my trees need to be more compact for easier handling. Switching to grow bags could also benefit them.
After you root prune this fig tree, how did it grown? Vigor and fruiting wise? Seems like you did not hold back in prune the roots.
Hi, this is a good question. Pretty much all of my larger trees had been root pruned like this. The severity of root pruning will depend on the individual case, so for your trees could be different. In my case, they were been converted to grow bags, and more intense pruning was required. They all got adapted well, were established and productive enough for my trial needs. My goal last season was to to confirm head start under lights and to confirm varieties. At the same time, they were top pruned, this is also necessary when root pruning to create a balance.
I am expecting this season for trees to be more productive, since their root system is now more established. Thanks for commenting.

I don’t see any benefits in growth using grow bags at least in my own experience u need to use a heavier mix of soil if you’re going to use grow bags cause otherwise you will need to water more
Thank you for commenting. To counteract more water needs, I am planning to place bags into heavy duty trash bags. Also, my trees will be on a drip line next season.
@@backyardfigs I come from a different POV. I don't use fast-draining potting soil (too expensive and wasteful in drought-prone California) so will switch to grow bags for certain types of citrus after testing them last year. We finally got a crazy amount of rain that kept coming this year (it actually rained again the last two days) and believe it or not, all my kumquats, navel oranges, and oro blanco grapefruit and figs did really good (some, their best year) being constantly wet/moist for the last few months in plastic pots. Most mandarin orange trees suffered in the pots. I noticed that the trees in grow bags did better. So that's why I'm switching to them for some citrus to guard against another crazy flood year.
