"Boy, you got your school shoes on!". Get em' papa:) I have watched several videos on cleaning these totes. Mine only had soy "oil". That product keeps the chocolate on candy bars. True dat! I am pretty sure I do not need to "waste" 550 gallons of precious water to clean it out. Now maybe it's the only way, but next time it rains I will hook my sprayer to the rain downspout and climb aboard the tote for some power washing (2 cups of dawn already in bottom in a few gallons of water that rain put in). Long handled mop/brush and some rolling around and I think I am good. Of course, the product in mine was already "food grade" and really would not hurt if not 100% clean as I filter it all or just use for animals and crops. (ooops just noticed from 2013:) That bot probably no longer wearing school shoes:)
Nice How-to vid. If you are going to irrigate with it, I believe the formula for PSI is 10' of elevation gives you 4 PSI. At least that is what I read somewhere. You'll need to wrap it in black plastic or paint it black to keep algae from growing. LDSprepper has a couple of good vids on that. He also has some good vids on making your rain catchment (downspouts, etc)
Dawn is great stuff, best thing to scrub a black power firearm. Also, if you get a tote that had agent orange, roundup, or the like, we have been using about 15 gallons of water with a couple of cups of Ammonia or so, then we roll it around to get all sides and dump. Do it 2 times and flush again with water. We then tested the water on grass and grass burs. Nothing died, so it is ready to go for watering the garden or whatever. We currently have 6 totes in service. Free Water after cleaning.
Not free for the environment......amazing : ( yeah just pour that stuff out on the ground...you idiot! There go your precious animals that you love to hunt...
thanks for the info....that will come in handy....going to use one for rain water.... much bigger than the 50 gallon blue barrel I got now....Greetings tim
I Got a tote that used to contain mineral spirits. Now i believe that the chemical is volatile and suppose to evaporate. I have some residue left behind any thoughts or suggestions on how to nuetralize or get rid of it with out causing a dangerous chemical combination.
My uncle gave me one of these totes...but it has a thick petroleum like grease residue on the inside floor ...any suggestions on how 2 effectively clean that out...i want 2 use this 2 do pressure cleaning & detailing
Hey What's the amount of soda of each package you used for the cleansing? Any experience mixing it up with vinegar? I'm using a small combination of both for cleaning my frying pan and such of nasty stuff Greetings from Germany
Well that's all great if you got access to lots of lots of water. But I'm trying to figure out how to clean one out when you've got minimum water. I have no running water at my place I'm kind of off grid. So if anybody's got a good idea on how to do that without using a whole lot of water I really appreciate it thank you.
There's no way of getting around needing lots of water... Not nearly as much as he used at one time. You can pour enough vinegar in it till it's at least 2 inches deep. Close all holes and valves. Let it set for 10 min, then lay it on its side and set for 10 min rotating to the next side, repeat till all sides have been soaked for 10 min each. Drain. Then insert water hose (while the valve is open) and rinse all the sides off including the top of the interior. If you have an oily substance in it you could use a whole bottle of dish soap and a few gallons of water 1st (using the same process of rotation & letting it set for only a few minutes) then do the vinegar. Vinegar is a natural fungus killer (mold) and it gets rid of most sticky & gooy residues. Bleach will KILL bacteria but NOT mold.
Sammy, You should of put a piece of plastic down and let the soapy water run over it so the kids could of had a "Slip-n-Slide"...LOL That is, if it wasn't a cold day...of course. Great Video...As usual...
I got a few of those that had organic fertilizer in it, I believe it was some kind of fish oil. How do you think would be the best way to clean about 3 to 5 inches of gunk out of the bottom?
Thanks for posting this.I'm saving this in favorites for when it warms up so I can clean the 2 I picked up.Does anyone know what "Niax silicone l-595" is?The 2 totes I have had that stored in it.They are very clean except the small amount on the very bottom.I plan to use your method of cleaning.I'm not going to use these for drinking water, just showers, toilet flushing and dish washing. Thanks in advance,Rob
@Ironhead41- My rainwater butt (about half the size of your one here) has got a few white/see-thru little tiny squiggly wiggly creatures of some kind living in it- they're so small you can barely see them- I don't really want to empty the whole thing out and clean/disinfect it all, but, d'you think I should, or??? I'm thinking that I'll have to. Just wondered what you thought. (Hey from the UK!)
jdekayable Dawn will break the trany fluid down. why do you think they use Dawn on all he animals in an oil spill. It breaks the oil down so that nature will finish it off.
"Boy you got your school shoes on!"

So, the residual transmission oil that was in the container is drained directly on the ground?
