Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0 184HP acceleration 0-225km/h

  • Done on a plane and straight section of the german Autobahn with no speed limit.
    It's a stock MX-5 from 2021 with a manual transmission and the 2,0l naturally aspirated R4 Skyactiv G-184 engine with 184HP.
    Note that this was done with summer tires at 4°C. Had to keep ESP on to avoid the rear wheels stomping around. Therefore the launch could have been faster under different conditions.

    I am fall in love with the sound! My dream car has been ae86 all the time because of the 4AGE sound. This Miata engine mimics almost the same of the 4AGE sound 😭

    6th gear is 1:1 for efficiency which is awesome, but seems to kill top end. ND2 is a great car!

    • @FrejrNA
      @FrejrNA  Рік тому +22

      Yea, exactly. Just checked, peak 184HP is at 7000rpm. When 5th gear ends at 7500rpm, it still has about 165HP, while when 6th kicks in at about 5500rpm at that speed, it's at about 150HP. So no chance for it still accelerating in 6th gear at 225km/h.

    "Miata is a slow car". Sure, yeah I guess it is. But the ND2 with Bilsteins and 181hp make it feel so fast and stable to the point that you don't realize you're speeding off the line.

      Nowadays for most people 200hp is slow because we are living in an era where there are 500hp car that weight 1.8 Tons
      Im currently driving an ND 1.5, not really powerful engine, but this 1498cc pull decently if we are considering the size of the engine
      Power to weight ratio + MT + short gear ratio equals fun
      And you can speeding more than needeed

    How does it handle that speed, is it stable?

    • @FrejrNA
      @FrejrNA  11 днів тому +1

      It's quite stable, especially considering its weight, thanks to the rather firm suspension. Although as soon as there is wind, it's pretty noticable at about 180km/h and above. Still, since the car itself is very small, and also feels very small of course, you don't have that typical ultra safe couch in your living room crusing feeling at 220km/h like in all the classic german left lane destroyers.

    It would have been interesting to know where and what weather conditions it was when the test run was made. Like elevation, air density, which involves temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, or dew point, not to mention wind, gradient, tire pressure, etc. In short, higher air density equates to lower top speed and vice versa. I've done my own calculations on that:

      @FrejrNA  Рік тому +6

      Yes, it is on. As I wrote, this was done at 4°C and with summer tires. Under these conditions launching with TCS off would only result in the rear wheels jumping around and much slower acceleration.

      That's "lane keeping assist off" there on the right, not ESC off. Had to keep ESC on due to the low temperature, as explained in the description. But at 225kph ESC isn't gonna save you from very much anyway.

      I think officially Mazda says 6,8s, but it consistently manages around 6,1s. It really is quite a quick car for it's power, the low weight plays a huge role here of course. And as Kelly Oubre Jr said, the launch also makes a pretty huge difference. The top speed is when you get reminded of the "only" 184HP, because that's where air resistance becomes a much greater factor than weight.

      @@FrejrNA I'm interested, that engine is tunnable?

    • @FrejrNA
      @FrejrNA  Рік тому +7

      @@T0maSsss-0 I don't think you can do that much with just software tuning, since the engine is naturally aspirated. There are compressor tuning kits out there, from BBR GTi for example. These usually get it up to around 240HP, but are kind of expensive. Same goes for installing a turbo. Would work, but really isn't that easy nor cheap. I think much of the character this car and engine have comes from the naturally aspirated nature of it, and for significant tuning you'd have to change that, or increase the displacement.

      The gear ratios are pretty good actually. Closely stacked and 6th gear is 1:1 instead of an overdrive like most cars.
      It's designed to get the most out of the engine.

    • @DessikaModus
      @DessikaModus Рік тому +1

      @@detaart 2nd gear is basically unusable unless you're trying to go from a slow roll. Even on track it's too short and you're better off staying in 3rd than downshifting to 2nd. A longer 1st and 2nd would be better. 6th gear doesn't have enough pulling power and might as well be OD but it does keep u in an ideal rpm to keep in 6th at highway speeds.
