I keep it simple. A hair straightener on the highest setting and 2000cc for 5ga mylar, 500cc for all one gallon, and 200cc for quarts and pints. Makes it easier when buying absorbers in bulk. If a bag doesn't seal by the next day, I cut the top, put in a fresh oxygen absorber and reseal. But I also freeze ALL of my beans, rice, oats, flour, etc for at least a week before going in mylar allowing them to hit room temp before sealing. With as great as it sounds that the lack of oxygen would prevent weevil, it does not kill weevil larvae. They go dormant and after reintroducing oxygen when opening, they will eventually hatch. I have done years of trial and error and lost tons (literally) of food because I didn't know. The info wasn't available on the internet when I began prepping, like it is today. If you don't want to freeze your food first, add food grade diatomaceous earth and let it set for about a week. It will kill the larvae too. If you're doing massive amounts, I put my mylar in 60ga screw top pickle barrels. Also freezer labels work wonderful for labeling and don't rub off over time.

I watched another video about using mylar bags and saw a helpful tip. Go ahead and seal all your bags leaving just a couple inches unsealed. Then open the oxygen absorbers, put them in the opening, and seal the last couple inches. With only a couple inches left to seal, it makes it quicker to get each bag closed and preserve the oxygen absorber's action.

They do make mylar bags & rolls of mylar material that work with vacuum sealers now. You can find them on Amazon. I've been using it for about a year now with my low end Foodsaver and I have had zero failures. Not a single one. It sucks it down into a brick that actually seems to be better than the clothes iron method. I've done about 75 bags of rice, beans, cereal, pasta, flour, sugar, salt and many other things and it never fails. Cut off what you need from the roll, double seal one end, pour your stuff into the bag, vacuum seal it and you're done. It cuts the labor by a HUGE amount. Oxygen absorbers aren't necessary. It is a game changer.

Yes the Placid toast is better way of storing the mylar bags and then the buckets are it is more efficient however I have found a better way then the plastic totes. I have a few more dollars and I buy ice chest almost the same size or slightly bigger than the totes. I find them to work better because not only were they protected the model values from the rodents it will also because it's insulated it'll help keep the add a stable temperature fulfilling all the storage went 01 requirements of keep it dry keep it dark and keep it cool

Hi Mary - Just an old, recluse Survivalist, coming here for some quick review: Wanted to long-term store some more Meow Mix for my daughter (pictured). It might not be considered the most nutritious food by cat experts, but it stores well FOR YEARS, both in and out of oxygen-free storage.
Looks like you've had at least as much practice over the years as I have: Especially with the use of O2 absorbers. You gotta use them fast! And just like me, you store the unused ones in a mason jar!. I also like to leave a small hole in the mylar, stick a straw into it and use my mouth to suck the remaining air out, just to help-out the little O2 absorbers (Though that's just me).

    Need some advice:
We live in a humid area and have a lot of moisture in our air. When putting foods into the freezer to kill bugs, I fear that the moisture will condensate and form ice crystals . How do I keep from having wet food once the items come out of the freezer and before they go into the mylar bags? This one thing is holding me up from moving forward. The last thing I want is food to be have moisture content.

Thanks for sharing. Haven't noticed any bugs in our rice which I just dump from the bag into our bucket. The only item that I have found a bug in was some flour. This week the teacher who usually does the live conferences is away so his actual teacher is doing it. Daniel is exempt from the assessment of skills test. That's great as he would do very poorly on the writing one. He is not good at coming up with open ended answers. He's not quite comfortable with his teacher yet. He's already familiar with the other one as she was his Extended School Year teacher too. He's also worked with the speech therapist before. However this is the first time interacting with Mr Connelly so I have to remind him to focus on his school work and to speak up. My Nintendo 2DS which is my most favorite of all my devices stopped charging so I guess I'll try sending it for repair which is half the cost of buying a refurbished one from the Nintendo store and a fraction of other ones I looked at. I prefer the non hinged older style version as the hinges on them are flimsy and tend to break easily. Not sure if it's the charging port that needs fixed or the battery needs replaced. The strange thing is my GameBoy Advance SP which is a much older system still charges and works great. I don't though have as many games to choose from to play on it. I guess I should look for some more options.

If you live in an area where the temperatures go below freezing and stay that way for maybe a day, you can put your buckets of food outside in a sheltered area, like your garage for at least 24 hours, which supposedly kills any insects or eggs that might be in the packaged food. But I would think merely being in an environment without oxygen would do the job just as well. We eat all kinds of bugs in our processed food all the time. The FDA allows some huge number of bug and bug parts per pound of processed food and we all manage to survive somehow. I think the bug thing should not be an issue with your food stored this way unless it was very buggy to begin with.

Thank you very much for your well organized and thorough coverage of sealing food in mylar bag with oxygen absorbers. Just one question: How long do the oxygen absorbers stay good once they are put inside the mason jars? I have a package of 100 oxygen absorbers but will be using maybe 12 of them for my upcoming project. Will they keep long enough I can use them in a few weeks or months stored that way?

Today is my first time ever using these bags and I'm a little lost far as sealing. These bags have a zipper like thing like a gallon freezer bag so how do I seal it they also came with oxygen absorbers but I have no idea if there're 100 ,300 etc. I didn't receive any instructions so a bite confused.

I prefer a Vacuum Chamber because you can Vacuum seal liquids without it getting sucked up in the Machine and they can Vacuum seal 5mil and 7mil bags better than anything else out there, the downside is they are expensive. Avid Armor makes nice ones.

I am watching this in September of 2021 and this information is more pertinent than ever. I am very interested in how to store long term food now that things are getting so crazy. Thanks for this very detailed, information packed video! I noticed you didn't include pasta in your foods list. I am gluten free, so was going to bag up some GF pasta to add to my pantry. Is there some reason NOT to store pasta this way? Thanks again!!!

So happy this was helpful. As to regular pasta, I believe that it can be stored in a mylar bag, however, as to gluten free pasta, I do not know. Maybe someone else will chime in here. Just yesterday I discovered your wonderful channel!!
The information you upload is excellent!
as a beginner I'm looking for short-term storage information
for two weeks to a month.
I live in a hot and humid area.
Since I prepare backpacking meals that have different types of foods, it is difficult for me to understand when it is better to use an oxygen absorber or a moistur absorber.
Or if heavy duty mylar bags that's seam sealed are enough..
Can you please make a video that explains this?
    Thank you😊

When that bag is opened & y'get the portion you want, do you have to put a fresh oxygen absorber in again & reseal it? Also, does the jar you put your oxygen abs. in while waiting to put them in subsequent bags, have to be sterilized? Sorry for that question, but I'm still creeping out on botulism. So afraid I will make some stupid makes & get us all sick. I saw where with the mason jars they have to be washed & put in the oven. Here I was just going to put them in the dishwasher & let it go at that! Ugh! Thanks again for the vid.

Hi Mary! Love your videos. Had a question about sealing in mylar. I know that you said that it has to be less than 10% fat to be able to go in Mylar. I have some bulk nutritional yeast. It is well under 10% at only 1% gram of fat. But I’m not finding anything on the Internet about storing it in mylar bags. I know there are some exceptions to storing in mylar long-term for some items. Do you or any of your viewers know if it would store well long-term in mylar bags? Thank you for your help.
    Blessings to you.

Mary do we need to wash rice before cooking? Many different opinions. Thank you.

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  2 роки тому

Hi Cynthia, yes… There are many different opinions on this. Years ago rice was not as well cleaned as it is today so that process of washing was a matter of getting it as clean as possible removing dirt, dust, etc. Today, many people will continue to wash rice to remove some of the starch so that it is not too sticky once cooked. But the level of starch in rice really depends on what type of rice you’re cooking. I don’t wash my rice prior to cooking and I find that it cooks up very nicely. But I generally use a very simple long grain rice. Some of your more ethnic rices may benefit from a rinsing to remove some of the starch so they’re not so sticky once cooked. However, that said, some recipes do call for the rice being sticky so there are a lot of variations! Sorry I can’t be more exact. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️
