    Look no further.... here's my über-easy method!
    To answer an often-asked question; Why use oxygen absorbers? Because no vacuum sealer can remove ALL the air.

    TYFS! My husband passed 09/22/21 and had purchase a box of Mylar bags from Amazon and I was going to put them in my yard sale (this spring) and I had a thought to go on UA-cam and research food savers and Mylar bags and found your video! Will definitely give this a try. 🤗

    When the two plastic strips are placed into the mylar bag only insert them to just above the heat strip. When sealing you will only be sealing the mylar and not the added strips.

    For powders I put them into a brown (or white) paper bag then into foodsaver or mylar bag this avoids the danger of powder being sucked into machine

    Some people may ask or think, why would I even use mylar bags over regular vacuum sealer bags. Something that is not talked about by these companies is that if you pull a hard enough vacuum on something, like 28" Hg +, two things happen to most materials. They begin to outgas (literally molecules of the material start to "break off" and permeate the vacuumed space) and eventually oxygen/air starts to permeate through the material to the inside, as well. There are not many materials out there that don't outgas and that can hold a medium to hard vacuum for a very long time.
    Plastics are particularly bad with this, minus teflon and Kapton. But teflon requires a very high heat to melt and when it does, it releases toxic fumes. Kapton requires a ridiculously high heat to melt.
    But metals on the other hand, particularly aluminium and some steels are very good at not outgassing and holding a vacuum for a very long time.
    In other words, mylar bags should, theoretically, hold a better vacuum over a longer time than regularly vacuum sealer bags. Because the Al is encased in the plastic, you will still experience some outgassing, but the Al layer will make it much harder for outside oxygen/air to permeate through to the inside.
    I had to learn all this stuff, because I'm less interested in vacuuming sealing for food, but more because I'm using one to make vacuum insulated panels.
    Personally, after sealing a mylar bag with this or other methods, I would go ahead and get some Al tape (sold for HVAC duct work etc), and fold it over the end of the seal, just as an extra barrier in case it didn't seal completely well.

    I've used this method as many times and it works good. Problem is most home vacuum Packers especially the food saver are not designed to seal that thick and rigid mylar bags and it burns out the ceiling unit on the vacuum Packers, especially the food savers. And once you burn it out you have to buy another one because trying to buy parts and fix it is virtually impossible. I quit doing this and I now just use large size oxygen absorbers and accomplish the same thing with my curling iron

      It may not be getting hot enough to seal mylar. There's not much you can do with such a machine other than upgrade to a better one.

    Are you sure your model # is 65-501-M ?
    All I see at Weston is 65-501-W
    Also what thickness mylar bags are you using.
    I need a machine that will seal 5mil bags.

    So the plastic pieces you used are sealed in-between the mylar seal no? You just leave them in there?

    • @BackPackHack
      @BackPackHack  5 місяців тому

      Yes... they're left in place. You can't pull them out as they're melted in situ. If you were able to pull them out, it would cause the seal to be broken.

    If you leave a slight crease in the mylar bag it will also work without wasting vacuum bags.

      I'm not wasting vac bags. I use the pieces cut off bags I've sealed things in.

    I stopped using the food saver because it allows oxygen back into the package over time. I began using mylar because it is a non-porous material that will keep oxygen out. Seems like using the material that fails within the seal line of the material that works better is counterproductive at best. I can see it working if the tabs are in place above the seal line but if you use it the way shown in the video why not just use a vacuum sealer bag and be done with it?

    What vacuum machine are you using? My Food Saver will not completely seal 9 mil Mylar Bags

    Will a standard food saver get hot enough to seal the mylar?

    Hi, what are the chances that those "inserts" don't seal properly from the hot sealer due to the increased material thickness in those spots? Ever have one "lose its vacuum" on you over time?

    • @BackPackHack
      @BackPackHack  2 роки тому

      I've never had a problem. A cheap sealer, however, might have difficulty creating a true seal.

    Genius. Could you insert a whole foodsaver bag inside a mylar and seal both at same time?

      Some sealers won't have the horsepower to seal that much material.

    great hack. what mil bags do you use? I got 9.5mil and they seem too thick

    • @BackPackHack
      @BackPackHack  2 роки тому

      I'm not positive, but I think the ones I use are 3.5mil.
      Keep in mind, not all sealers are the same. Some simply don't have the ability to seal mylar.

    Do you still need to use oxygen absorbers in some items? Thanks so much for sharing this idea... definitely will be using this way of sealing.
