  • Hope you guys are ready for a Seoul apartment tour! Or rather, 10 of them lol. I spent a little over a week apartment hunting because in Korea you really REALLY need to physically go see the places, and I took you along with me! In a odd turn of events, our landlady (we stan!!!!) agreed to do something called 반전세 which is 'half jeonse' aka we put down $80K and our rent is only $650! (Our current rent is $850) The houses we were looking at are all in the 2억5-3억 ($250K-300K) range but we really didn't want anything over 2억5.
Hope this was at least interesting even if we didnt end up moving :)))) happy to be staying in our sweet home!

Forgot to mention that with the jeonse system you DO get that giant deposit back so for 2 years you're really paying interest on the loan you take from the bank and then at the end of the two years you can just pay the loan back in full with the deposit you got back :)

Serina Helene Ljung hahah its hard to imagine because it think korea is one of the only countries that use this but basically, you give a HUGE chunk of money instead of rent and the landlord uses that money to invest and make money that way. When you move out, the landlord gives you back that lump sum!

Korean housing consist of largely 4 types
    1. apartment(most preferable huge buildings stick together so that it make a huge village) 2. house 3. Villa(small type of 1 building apartment) 4. studio(오피스텔 or 원룸)

I understand the huge anxiety of not knowing where to live.
I moved to London 7 years ago and I didn’t have a house for the first month. It was hugely stressful. I was looking at horrible apartments shared with other peoples and I just wanted to go back to my country.
I finally found a room with a nice family but I kept being worried of being forced to move out again. In the meantime my relationship with my dad fell apart and he sold the house I grow up in without even a word.
After a few years in London I went back to my country (my mom’s house) and then I had to move again. Thank god I’m just 100km away from my original home. My contract will end in 1.5 year and I’m really dreading the possibility of moving again for have a job 😞

I spent one year in Korea and I really enjoyed coffeeshops, bookstores, stationary stores etc in Seoul, and all the atmosphere. I feel frustrated when people think immediately (and only) about Kpop drama etc when I speak about Korea, but your channel, it’s like the reflection of what I felt there so really thank you to show Seoul and your soul 😍

Oh my gosh, with that house you will have your very own personal space for writing, reading, painting, etc. so much can be don’t with just the patio. It’s not even my house and I’m already excited. When it’s winter you can add Christmas lights and you and your husband can drink hot chocolate outside 🥺👉🏼👈🏼

I loved the place with the backyard!! Of course the view is important too, but just imagining how I'd decorate it is giving me joy right now.
The entire video was still SO stressful, the layouts of the apartments are soo inconvenient

Agreed! They really tried to squeeze 2 rooms in there when one big room would be so much less claustrophobia-inducing.

Dude, I FELT your stress. I hate moving so much too (and yet I tend to do it often lol). I came to that crossroad not too long ago myself and I decided to stay and make the space work for me. I'm excited to rearrange and redecorate (I definitely have the time to do it right now).
I'm glad this has a happy ending, I LOVE your apartment's windows!

The Owner of the Apartments probably hired several Apartment Brokers and whoever finds the first Customer gets the Commission. So they have to be very "pushy" towards Customers or the Competition gets the Commission. 😁

Very informative for apartment hunting in Seoul. I lived there for my first 4 years doing 월세 organized through my school employers (The school pays the large deposit for teachers and deducted $500 every paycheck).
Then I got married and we saved enough to do the "반 전세" for the tiniest Studio apt in Seoul like you guys to start. Great for newlyweds cause you literally live in 1 room and if you get in a fight/argument, you have to work it out quickly 😄. Then we did that crazy apartment hunting with a realtor like you did after 2 years in Seoul and ultimately decided to move to the outskirts (cheaper), get a car, and live in a larger newer 2nd floor "Villa" to live my remaining 3 years in Korea. Ironically, now I'm a realtor back in Canada. Where we are in Canada, avg monthly rents for a 1 bed apt start at $1,300/mth with no other financing options for renting. In Korea, Jeonsae (전세) and hybrid Jeonsae was a great system to help people save money, but I heard it's pretty much disappearing now because the deposit amount is almost as much as buying (매매). On another note, if you're not a Korean national it's much harder to qualify for a mortgage or jeonsae loan there. At the time, they had offered us less cause I was a foreigner despite my income being higher than my Korean spouse's.

Love these kinda videos! When you have the privilege to choose where to make your home there's no point to making it where it doesn't feel right tbh. I'm moving out of student housing and getting the keys to my new apartment today and it's just what I need right now. Life is really chaotic lately and I can't wait to move my life into a more permanent and stable space. I saw two almost identical apartments in the same building but had two completely different experiences seeing them, which made all the difference and let me pick the right one for me. Heart over head all the way!

I'm also an expat living in Korea who just moved again two weeks ago...I totally get what you're talking about with how even the potential of moving is a unique stress that is hard to go through...😓 Although viewing houses(apartments) can be fun & interesting, making decisions and feeling pressured is NOT.
You made a great video & I'm sure others will benefit from your content! Glad you don't have to move this time after all!🎶🙂

I'm a window person too, I moved into the room I'm in now just because of its windows and even though I haven't seen the rest of your house, just from that little bit of window next to you I can tell you made the right choice! None of the other houses could compare to that (from the window perspective at least) 😁👍

I'm actually crying right now. I was so close to moving to Busan and then Seoul and because of COVID-19 I lost my job at the company, I lost my apartment, I lost everything. Like I'm so happy for you two, don't get me wrong but I'm so sad....it was all for nothing. Learning Korean, the applying process, starting to move :(((

From the bits you've shown of your apartment, none of them really came close. Especially since you said at the end that you have a bath tub. I could never give up that for any of those other bathrooms. Ok, maybe for that reading nook... huge maybe! Glad you both decided to stay in this one! That view is too pretty to leave...

I feel you so much about windows ahah having lots of natural light where I live is probably one my most portant criteria! Last summer I carried an internship in Bolivia and I noticed that a lot of building I was going to had very few windows or really tiny ones...oh man that lack of natural light made me feel so depressed 😥

I dont know why but im so in love with this vlog.. i know how hard it is to make decision. Ive been in your situation before but different thing its about changing or staying in my current job..
Ive had several offers, been to the interviews and yet im still with my current job. Bcs i realize ive havent really give myself time to adjust. Ive only been working here close to 2 months. And like kurt, i too thought that the benefits of staying far outweight of changing another job. And yes i am as emotional as you reviewing your decision to move out too.
