Keep in mind you will only get IMAX enhanced audio if YOUR DISPLAY supports IMAX enhanced. So let's say you have an AVR that supports IMAX ENHANCED DTS along with a streaming device that supports DTS such as an ONN Google TV but you are using a JVC projector you will not get the IMAX ENHANCED AUDIO. But you will get IMAX ENHANCED video. Which seems so stupid that you can get the video but not the audio.
Not exactly true. THE ONN Google box doesn't support DTS:X Profile 2 decoding. It only supports DTS core and DTS passthrough. There is no passthrough concept for DTS:X Profile 2. It *must* be decoded in the client device. This is why none of the current streaming devices like AppleTV, FireTV, Roku, and NVIDIA Shield work. They do not decode DTS-X Profile 2. The streaming device has to support DTS:X Profile 2 decoding for this to work. Right now in the US, only Sony and Hisense TVs can support this as they have dts:x Profile 2 decoders on board. DTS and Disney+ started with these TVs because they both can decode DTS-X for streaming (DTS:X Profile 2) and they're both on the Google TV platform so they could work on a single app platform for multiple brands. Good to hear it sounds better, but all these comments that have turned this into “DTS:X is better than Atmos” are just comical. It’s all about how the tracks are mixed. There are great Atmos tracks and great DTS:X tracks, and also bad ones for both formats. Disney is the real problem. The audio on their 4K discs has been weak for years. I can’t say it’s been all of them, because Prey sounded great. But for the most part, they just don’t release great audio tracks.
Hello Ealan…. Thank you for enlightening us all about the sound up grade on Disney + And than for the demo as well 👏🏼👍🏼👊🏼 I went onto Disney+ yesterday evening, which was Saturday for to try it out myself, but unfortunately all I got was IMAX-Dolby Atmos I could not get the IMAX DTS-X ☹️ It looks like I’ll have to upgrade my TV QE85Q60AAUXXU 85" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR QLED sometime near the end of the year when the Black Friday sales are on, My Denon processor the AVC-X4700H is capable of dealing with IMAX enhanced plus the AUDIO 🤞🏼🏴🇬🇧
Well, hopefully streamers like the Google TV Streamer, AppleTV 4K or similar will support IMAX/DTS:X audio soon. That way you can plug the streamer directly into your X4700H directly and keep your TV. Hopefully that happens soon! 🤞
Are they streaming dts:x over HDMA, if yes then that will definitly perform better than atmos over dolby digital plus. Else in 4K bluray I always liked DTHD atmos movies over DTS:X MA encoded movies.
Yes, IMO. The MCU titles just have this crispness that’s JUST a little better than the standard format. And taking up the whole 16:9 frame sure does help, as opposed to black bars above and below. 👍
Ealan, Did you check the bitrate and info from the stream? And, compare Imax to Atmos? Thx. Also, Is it, overall, better to run the CAT6 to the TV then E-ARC to the AVR/processor or a streamer(HDMI) into the AVR then(HDMI) out to the TV?
I’ll see if there’s a way to check bitrates. 🤔 And just in general, it shouldn’t matter plugging directly into the TV or into an AVR, unless maybe it’s a PS5 or XBOX Series X and your TV can process gaming features better (depending on which component is newer). But in regards to IMAX audio on Disney+, you HAVE to use the internal streaming apps to get it to work (for now). So a CAT6 to the TV would be best (until streamers finally support IMAX/DTS:X).
@@ealanosborne Thank you Sir. Me being an old fart I have never seen a reason to feed the TV then go to the AVR until the TVs somehow became "smart". Personally, All I want is a great display fed by an equally great processor fed by great streamer or disk player. Separates for everything. However, I may be wrong and I often am. All the very best to you and yours, Kevin
Cool! I will try it tonight (and I will have to re-activate my D+ subscription)! Are there also Star Wars titles with IMAX Enhanced Audio? Because I'm not so much into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. EDIT: I commented too early before the end of the video when you say that only the Sony TV supports it and ATV 4K (my main streamer) hasn't got it yet, that's a pity because my AVR supports it. Ok, hope Apple wakes up and doesn't arrive last in supporting a new format (like they did with Atmos).
Not yet! But I sure hope they’re trying to add more titles like Star Wars. That would set Disney+ apart from other streaming platforms even more, IMO. 🎉
Alright, time for Disney (as well as other studios) to put DTS X into 4k bluray discs, too. Let alone DTS X get the glory it had before... 🎉 I have the same opinion as you elan, even when comparing jurassic world dominion atmos (via streaming) vs bluray disc having DTS X. Sure not a fair comparison. But definitely a lot better in DTS X. DTS X, just come back!
Thanks for the info! Question. Would the IMAX enhanced audio make ANY difference if my receiver is not IMAX Enhanced? I have a Sony Bravia 9 TV but my receivers is the Denon S750H. It has DTS Neural:X but but DTS:X. Thanks!
No, the AVR would also have to support IMAX Enhanced for it to work. Sure, you could just play audio through your BRAVIA 9 speakers to get IMAX audio, but that kind of defeats the purpose 😄
I'm getting the opposite, Atmos sounds louder and has more range then when I switch to IMAX enhanced, IMAX enhanced sounds quieter. I'm using the Sony A95L with Sony Bravia 9 soundbar. The sound bar says it's playing DTS HD 5.1 not IMAX DTS-X. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
@@Music.Movies.67I agree and I do have one in my basement theater setup but have a A90J and it doesn't have the ability to do imax enhanced sound on Disney+. Soundbar is in the living room
This is what I have gathered from interviews on the subject DTS X imax sounds better on D+ (I agree it does) for two reasons, neither are really the fact it's DTS X. First Disney are using a different mix for the DTS X versions, they are based on the cinema soundtrack not the neutered home mixes they put out. Secondly D+ are using a higher bitrate on the DTS track, I am betting if Atmos matched those two things there would be very little to no difference. Also the Bravia core app on your Sony oled has DTS X Imax versions of the movies and the atmos mixes and are far higher bitrates, that's what you should do the testing on.
Wow very surprise that it was deployed. But My Disney App seems different from you and I have no option even if I got the equipment for. Can tou give my your version? By the way I’m in Canada maybe it not deployed.
Hey Ealan, I was waiting for your review on this cause I have a different experience with DTS X on Disney+. I have a Hisense U8K 75 inch hooked up to Yamaha V6A 5.1.2 setup & I am getting atleast 12 db less on DTS X then the atmos track. I have tried different settings but its not changing anything. I would like to have similar experience referred in you Video. I would really appreciate if you could somehow share some insight to improve my experience. Thanks in advance. Love your videos.
From what I’m seeing in the listed features of the Yamaha V6A, it does not support IMAX Enhanced. Both the Hisense U8K (which is listed as supporting IMAX audio) and AVR would need to support IMAX Enhanced content to work properly. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne awesome! Thanks. Have we done a recent walkthrough of your HT? I can't recall. Here is a video idea - what about a walkthrough combined with an overview of the process you took to decide on seating, viewing distance, screen size, speaker position and angles. That would be fascinating to watch.
I'm upgrading my man cave TV. But I'm waiting for the holidays. To catch them TV deals. There's a TCL I'm eyeing. The TCL 85" QM8. This TV is an IMAX enhance. Currently have an LG OLED CX 65". Can't wait when the time comes. To purchase the QM8. To experience this format.
Just so you know, the QM8 does have the IMAX video mode (though you shouldn't use it because it ignores proper tone mapping) but does NOT output DTS:X yet for Disney+ content, nor have they announced that support is coming that I know of. Not trying to dissuade you from it, because it's a FANTASTIC TV... but if you're buying it for that reason alone, you should be aware of it.
Hey Ealan on a 5.2.4 set up is it ok to put surround speakers to left and right of seats? I’m seeing online that half say slightly behind and others swear by next to your side. What would you do?
I have a 2023 Sony Bravia 85 inch x93l. I can play IMAX Enhanced on Disney Plus using the TV app but DTS is no where to be found. I can only play it in Atmos. There are no audio settings to switch on DTS. 😢🤔
@@tom6363 I guess make sure the audio output on the TV has bitstream priority engaged, since your exact model TV is on a list of TVs that should support IMAX audio. 🤷♂️
I have an issue using my tvs internal Disney Plus app. I have a Sony A80L connected to the Onkyo RZ-50 both of which are capable of IMAX enhanced audio (as far as I can tell). When playing content from the internal apps I cannot get either IMAX enhanced or Dolby Atmos. I’ve tried numerous settings adjustments but no luck. Normally I use my Apple TV 4K without issue. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.
I assume you have the highest tier, but Disney+ Basic (with ads) does not support Atmos or IMAX Enhanced. But you are correct - your Sony A80L is on the list of supported TVs, as well as the RZ50. It sounds like you most likely tried this already, but make sure the TV’s audio output is set to bitstream and not PCM or something else. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne I have the highest tier Disney+ along with the highest tier Max. I had never used the internal apps before trying to get IMAX Enhanced audio. As part of my testing I also tried the Max internal app and did not get Atmos on that either. I'm sure it's some dumb setting configuration that I'm getting wrong, just frustrating as I was really looking forward to hearing the difference. The audio output is set to Auto 1, the options are Auto 1 or 2 and PCM. I do not get the cog icon at the bottom of the screen that you used to select IMAX Enhanced Audio. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it.
Ealan, have you ever explained in a video your reasoning for going the TV route over a projector? I have a projector with a 135" screen, I miss the contrast and color of a TV but feel I can't give up the size.
I just haven’t gotten around to doing a projector yet. Since I do most of my gaming in my living room, I could definitely get away with a projector in my dedicated theater. Although it’s pretty small at only 11 feet wide. A 120” screen would barely fit, dealing with all the other stuff in my theater. 😂
@@ealanosborne I have the same situation, the theater room is 11ft wide and I put in a 135" scope screen. So when it's 16:9 content I use the lens memory on my Epson projector to reduce the size. The screen literally goes wall to wall touching each side. Haha I went acoustically transparent and put the speakers behind it.
Because those are the current defaults for IMAX Enhanced content on Disney+. LG TVs are slated to support IMAX Enhanced audio (DTS:X) possibly later this year with a firmware update. The IMAX Enhanced option for picture (better quality and 16:9 aspect ratio) has been around on Disney Plus since November 2021.
I notice, when watching streaming, that before a large scene with lots of sound and action, it seems like it almost gets quite in those spots. I am guessing because of the lack of range due to the compression.
Go into your audio options and make sure dynamic compression isnt turned on. That seems to be an automatic process for streaming so soundbars arent damaged.
Question, not related so much to the video but I have trouble finding a solution. I have a marantz 7015 and I have my rear height speakers setup as surround heights right over my surrounds. For some reason they do not turn on when in Atmos only on Aura 3D. I'm running 5.2.4 setup. I tried multiple solutions but they do not give sound unless I list them in marantz menu as rear heights or middle ceiling speakers. Any help is appreciated!
Yeah, the term “surround heights” is synonymous with Auro 3D. Atmos and DTS:X technically only support front, middle and rear heights. So I would just assign them as rear heights, since that would still be recognized by all 3 audio formats. It’s weird, I know. 😄
@ealanosborne thank you for that clarification, atleast now I know instead of getting even more frustrated trying to fix an issue lol btw that you for all the content it's help me alot with my setup. Movies and shows have never been the same!
So how is the audio in Sony core .?. Anytime soon a video on that ? As Sony claims it’s a less lossy format for audio n video??? And which Hisense model has IMAX enhanced?..
@ealanosborne did you register the TV? When you do and then you make an account for Sony Core, you can access the app. They do have some movies to watch for free with some of their movies in IMAX DTS, although most movies in their Sony lineup you do have to pay for. It's worth it though, it sounds amazing
No, sorry. Your streaming device (whether that be your XBOX or TV) would need to support IMAX Enhanced, as well as your soundbar or AVR. Soundbars from Sony support it (BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8, Bar 9, Quad) and several AVRs support it from Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Sony, etc. XBOX might support it with a future firmware update, possibly in 2025. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne Yeah, it’s been like that for awhile and appears to be a known issue. Not sure with who, Google or Disney. But I always have the latest firmware and apps are up to date. Good old reliable 4K bluerays for the win. Can’t take my Atmos away on those!
Not especially, but I’d have to do more testing. This was an initial test just to see if there was any different at all. Bass extension was most noticeable and overall dynamics
I saw a comment that you made earlier with a bookmarked page flat panel something or other and it gives a list of TVs that are IMAX audio enhanced. My TV is listed on there and check marked in all three areas I currently have the Sony Bravia A80j. Well, unless you want to wait until streamers support it. That way you can bypass the TV part of it and just plug the streamer into a soundbar or an AVR directly. 🤷♂️
It is useless feature for me at the moment since DTX:X is available only on select new TVs. I hope one day they enable DTS:X on streaming devices. I can’t afford to buy new tv for these IMAX enhanced movies on Disney plus.
I have always been an avid hater on every TV that doesn't support DTS, I stopped buying Samsung for this exact reason. Sadly streamers is the same thing, the new Google streamer is garbage no DTS support on launch and I doubt they'll update it. Nvidia had it but that device is too old right now and since Nvidia only cares about AI they haven't made another one. Maybe Apple embraces it soon because there isn't one that supports imax enhanced. And yeah we need this, Atmos has stagnated a lot on streaming without a real competition. They need to improve on audio a lot on streaming for me is the thing that suffers the most.
Maybe if Apple is pushed to support this, they will just open it up (Apple TV) and support TrueHD passthru... lol what am I kidding? Apple will never do that...
Did some searching online and found some interesting stuff. It seems DTS:X is actually inferior to Dolby Atmos in terms of tech specs. So, may it be that that the mixer just did a better job? DTS:X profile 2 (used for streaming) is a 5.1.4 channel mix based on the 12-channel IMAX theatrical mix, streaming at a 448 Kbps audio bitrate. Source: www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1715859331 Dolby Atmos, though, is lossy-compressed, to 768kbps. Note that that's the total bitrate and not the per-channel bitrate, and this form of Atmos supports up to 128 virtual channels. Source: www.stereophile.com/content/dolby-atmos-bleak-shadow
Just another reason why I never judge too quickly on numbers alone. Sure, IMAX Enhanced seems “inferior” with that spec breakdown, but I know what I heard. 🤷♂️ In the end, my ears and brain interpreting the sound waves are my final judge. 😎 Thanks for your insight and sources to back up the data. 👍

Is my Sony A80J capable of IMAX enhanced audio?
Good to hear it sounds better, but all these comments that have turned this into “DTS:X is better than Atmos” are just comical. It’s all about how the tracks are mixed. There are great Atmos tracks and great DTS:X tracks, and also bad ones for both formats.
Disney is the real problem. The audio on their 4K discs has been weak for years. I can’t say it’s been all of them, because Prey sounded great. But for
the most part, they just don’t release great audio tracks.
Hello Ealan…. Thank you for enlightening us all about the sound up grade on Disney +
And than for the demo as well 👏🏼👍🏼👊🏼
I went onto Disney+ yesterday evening, which was Saturday for to try it out myself, but unfortunately all I got was IMAX-Dolby Atmos I could not get the IMAX DTS-X ☹️
It looks like I’ll have to upgrade my TV QE85Q60AAUXXU 85" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR QLED sometime near the end of the year when the Black Friday sales are on,
My Denon processor the AVC-X4700H is capable of dealing with IMAX enhanced plus the AUDIO 🤞🏼🏴🇬🇧
Well, hopefully streamers like the Google TV Streamer, AppleTV 4K or similar will support IMAX/DTS:X audio soon. That way you can plug the streamer directly into your X4700H directly and keep your TV. Hopefully that happens soon! 🤞
@@ealanosborne Thank for the heads-up on about the AppleTV 4K 🤞🏼 🏴🇬🇧
Are they streaming dts:x over HDMA, if yes then that will definitly perform better than atmos over dolby digital plus. Else in 4K bluray I always liked DTHD atmos movies over DTS:X MA encoded movies.
Sonos needs to provide more support for DTS (including DTS-mono).
dynamic range aside, DTS has ALWAYS had more umph over Dolby - this extends through all types of each option....
Happy this actually works now. Is there any picture quality gains to go along with the better audio?
Yes, IMO. The MCU titles just have this crispness that’s JUST a little better than the standard format. And taking up the whole 16:9 frame sure does help, as opposed to black bars above and below. 👍
I'm pretty sure it will ask you to do you want access IMAX enhanced if you clear the cache on the app on the TV
And just in general, it shouldn’t matter plugging directly into the TV or into an AVR, unless maybe it’s a PS5 or XBOX Series X and your TV can process gaming features better (depending on which component is newer).
Have you tried the Sony pictures core app on your new Sony OLED? Lots of imax enhanced tiles with dts X
Not yet! Hopefully soon. 🤞
@@ealanosborne even better than Disney + as it has pure stream enabled for that app.
I have the same opinion as you elan, even when comparing jurassic world dominion atmos (via streaming) vs bluray disc having DTS X. Sure not a fair comparison. But definitely a lot better in DTS X.
DTS X, just come back!
Yes! Please! 🤞
I got the Bravia 9 and love it. 🙂
There is a AV Receiver your are missing, forget soundbars
Possibly the A95L needs to be outputting bitsream. The Bar 9 should recognize a DTS:X signal
@@Music.Movies.67I agree and I do have one in my basement theater setup but have a A90J and it doesn't have the ability to do imax enhanced sound on Disney+. Soundbar is in the living room
This is what I have gathered from interviews on the subject
DTS X imax sounds better on D+ (I agree it does) for two reasons, neither are really the fact it's DTS X.
Yep! That’s what I hope to test soon! 🤞
I don't get the settings icon cog on the UK Disney plus
Any word on Disney + being able to play on current imax enhanced TVs like a Sony A90J?

Wow very surprise that it was deployed. But My Disney App seems different from you and I have no option even if I got the equipment for. Can tou give my your version? By the way I’m in Canada maybe it not deployed.
Hmmm…maybe there is a difference in Canada? 🤷♂️ Not sure.
Hey Ealan,
I was waiting for your review on this cause I have a different experience with DTS X on Disney+.
@@ealanosborneThank you for your insight. Well won't be changing my avr for atleast 2 more years so I'll just have to wait. 😢
Any smart tv boxes support imax enhanced ? Or does it have to be the baked in the smart tv like the Sony ?

@@fotophotographer 🤔 Interesting idea!
And can we get it on Blu-ray’s disc now ?
I hope that’s coming next… 🤞
So if my system has DTSx it should work?
No, sorry. It has to support IMAX Enhanced like some Sony and Philips soundbars, as well as select Denon, Marantz, Sony and Onkyo receivers.
Oh man...I just got the BRavia 8.
Yeah, buddy! 🎉
Apparently the LG G4 can decode dts but on the app it’s only in Dolby Atmos
Correct. It’s rumored LG 2024 models will get a firmware update later this year that will allow it to support IMAX/DTS:X. 🤞🤞
Is the streaming version in imax enhanced better than the Blu-ray version dvd? Usually streaming doesn’t work as well as the dvd.
I’m gonna do that next, but I’m going to bet even IMAX audio is still not quite Blu-ray quality. But this is a definite step in the right direction 👍
Hey Ealan on a 5.2.4 set up is it ok to put surround speakers to left and right of seats? I’m seeing online that half say slightly behind and others swear by next to your side. What would you do?
I would do slightly behind since there are no Surround Backs. Just gives the illusion that you almost have both 😁
I can get imax enhanced through my LG TV and Sony ES 5000 receiver, very nice 👌🏽
Really…that’s interesting! Didn’t think it would work with LG TVs yet. 🤷♂️

@@shipleyshipster Yeah, man! I hope to do that someday! TOTAL IMMERSION! 😂
Can you explain why if you pick IMAX enhanced on LG tv it goes to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos?
Because those are the current defaults for IMAX Enhanced content on Disney+. LG TVs are slated to support IMAX Enhanced audio (DTS:X) possibly later this year with a firmware update.
The IMAX Enhanced option for picture (better quality and 16:9 aspect ratio) has been around on Disney Plus since November 2021.
I notice, when watching streaming, that before a large scene with lots of sound and action, it seems like it almost gets quite in those spots. I am guessing because of the lack of range due to the compression.
True. That’s a limitation of soundbars and less expensive AVRs too when you have a large configuration (7.1.4, for example).
@ealanosborne interesting. So then is it more of a processing issue with the soundbar/AVR then with the compression/formating of the streamed audio?
Go into your audio options and make sure dynamic compression isnt turned on. That seems to be an automatic process for streaming so soundbars arent damaged.
@FURognar thanks!
Edit: Changed the sound setting makes s huge difference. Thanks again!
Sadly we don't have this in India, not even dolby atmos.
My only complaint is why dolby Atmos suck when it came from Disney studio but it sound better when it came from Sony?
🤷♂️
IMAX enhanced has being on Disney Plus for years, and DTS-X, and it is on every TV. And by the way, LG will always be the king of OLED.
Love to hear this but $3000 for a new TV is a tough biscuit to chew. Some day.
Just a waiting game until streamers support IMAX DTS:X 🤞
Do we know the bitrate?
Trying to get that nailed down… 👍
This is what I am curious of as well… are they actually sending you more data or just a different mix.

Shame Disney Plus doesn't do good stuff in Imax not into kids super hero movies, grew out of that at 14 years old

I have always thought DTS sounded better
Disney+ atmos suck , but i wont think so that in disc atmos is any worse that imax.
Source: www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1715859331
Dolby Atmos, though, is lossy-compressed, to 768kbps.
In the end, my ears and brain interpreting the sound waves are my final judge. 😎
