The Evil Within is a brutally beautiful survival horror game with gory action and trippy psychological moments throughout.
Tango Gameworks (RIP🪦) and Bethesda’s horror masterpiece is directed by gore guru Shinji Mikami, who first created the legendary Resident Evil series, and can be considered RE’s spiritual successor.
There are elements of the early Resident Evils in there, but also chunks that could have come straight from Resident Evil 4, and signs of more surprising influences, particularly Dark Souls, Sony’s Siren and Silent Hill. I bet Dead by Daylight and RE: Revelations 2 were greatly inspired by this is design, flashlight and heartbeat inducing locker hiding mechanics.
Although RE's recipe of puzzle solving, combat, investigation and exploration is much different, in some ways, The Evil Within is more lax and experimental, shifting abruptly from one scene, or setting to another like a vivid nightmare, and shifting tone and style just as quickly. Meanwhile some will scoff at it’s generic, obvious beats and working set-pieces that you’ll have seen many times before.
This is hands down one of my fav spooky games I’ve ever experienced and remains in my top 10 of the Survival Horror genre, worth a whirl.
