On a Solo Winter Overnight in a remote wilderness beaver swamp I continue building my Bushcraft log survival shelter and cook some campfire chili with my dog Bella. I build a front wall to block wind and reflect heat. Episode 3 in a series. Its late March and Winter is winding down spring is in the air and its battle to push winter out is underway. Winter is still holding on but the days are now longer and the sun is bright what an amazing time to be in a wilderness forest.

LOVE your shelter!!! I wish I could do that stuff!! If it were me, if possible, I’d take a couple of young trees & plant them by the shelter to have shade trees!!! Where is this? It’s beautiful! Take care!

Excellent! Great looking shelter fort. I can envision lashed together logs for the side(s). Laying on the ground when not needed with the ability to pull up it up for when you need that extra bit of wind break.

I like to mix it up with the styles talking less talking etc. Depending i enjoy it all and get my share of quiet in the woods and others like it to when watching especially if they dont speak English but i also will chat and then on certain adventures there is lots of commentary so it varries. hello Ted, sympa ton abri!...sans cordage...j'ai adoré quand Bella te faisait des léchouilles lorsque tu coupais l'arbre...donc c'est un étang..okay...le fait de " nettoyer" le terrain en coupant les arbres morts, te donne chaud..un abri , de la chaleur..et de quoi cuisiner...bonne continuation..très belle vidéo, des arbres magnifiques...
What if it rains, won't you get wet through the gaps between the sticks?
Yes because it was still winter i wasn't concerned but as it got hot out it would be an issue. I would need to waterproof it either naturally or with a tarp.
Looks like yer sleeping bag is the military sleep system...if so, I have one of em...nice bag, I threw mine on my kids trampoline at -30f and slept in it all night!!! Two days later I'm in an exam room at the hospital and being told I have pneumonia!!!! Kinda sucked but hey....I slept outside at -30f!
I find it harder to get around this time of year, until all the snow is gone.

What are u doing when it starts raining?
With it being winter and going below freezing at night and no rain forcasted in the day i wasn't worried but if it started raining i had a bivvy bag... I also would have had to waterproof the roof and likely would have started that very early into the build. Either with a tarp or natural waterproofing like bark
You were lucky to have such a great weather.
How would the shelter fare if rain would come?
It would leek but with temps below freezing at night snow was a risk more then rain and good weather in day i was ok. Otherwise i would need a tarp or natural waterproofing. As used The design was more for warmth & comfort. It could definitely be better lots of potential

Yes and no. Dogs have special feet. Pretty amazing actually how cold they can get and still be good a lot of science goin on there. Our feet would snap off like iceacles long before a dogs

Makes it easier to hang out with its not really solo when shes with me..the reason i mentioned the feet was because i looked into it was was pretty amazed blew my mind like -35 they can roll around like champs.
