    Your wife should be cooking you a healthy dinner. While you make the fire she could easily cut up veggies for a more nutritious meal. Dogs should not eat much steak. Too much fat.bring carrot or broccoli or some canned salmon or pumpkin. Your dog is too special to have digestive problems eating so much meat so late at night.

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  3 роки тому

      Hey Nan i Appreciate you concern. Dogs are carnivores however and veggies are not particularly good for them they are filler in many dog foods because they are cheaper. Wolves dont eat carrots for example. But she doesn't always get steak just a treat sometimes she eats a high quality dog food she doesn't get digestive problems and is very well taken care of. Also you cant bring veggies when its -20 they will freeze and spoil in minutes. A high fat high protein high calorie diet is actually pretty healthy for high labor cold weather activities...But don't worry we eat veggies at home lol or on some of our summer trips.

      What kind of hide is that? Is it bear? It looks like a great base for your sleeping bags, and Bella looked warm and snug wrapped up in it. You got a sub from me today, I'm glad you came up in my feed. :^)
      Edit: So @32:40 I got my answer - it's musk ox! I thought the hair looked too long to be bear, but never dreamed you could get your hands on a musk ox hide. That's so freaking cool!

    Cozy!
    I just wonder: If you’re going to build such a large structure, wouldn’t it be easier to build a snow covered tipi or something? With wooden logs as support structure and some snow blocks, if available, to fill the gaps? Or a mat of branches.
    If the snow is too heavy for the supports, you could start with filling in the lower end, and let it sinter before going higher up.

    What a great trip! So much work but a great reward! Quinzee was so big! Heather the benches were wonderful! It looked so nice with the fire an the lights. You have the nicest saws! Love the maple wood saw. I watch Lost Lakes with John and Erin. They made a quinzee and it caved in on John. I was on the edge of my seat ! Erin got him out. They ended up sleeping in it with no roof. I told them about your shelter with the snow walls an the bowed branches an evergreens for the roof incase they need that idea in the future. Thanks alot for the video. Did you ever look on the video that I saw eyes in the woods behind you? I watched it twice and I think I saw them but you never know I could have had 1 to many. Worst part of these builds is how wet you get doing it both sweat and snow. Hard to avoid. If you don’t change after building I never seem to warm up after.

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  3 роки тому +1

      So i didn't mention it in the video but i wore rain pants and coat for the dig. Also the larger size allows u not to get snow falling on you while digging with is a perk to making it big despite being more work. The combination of these and also not having too many layers on ment i didn't sweat too much which helped to keep dry compared toother ones ive built. But no matter what before bed we always change our base layers in winter there is always dampness that will ruin the night and make u cold if you don't just a reality so you are smart to do that for sure. But with this system the outer layers stayed nicely dry

    Newby, but why don't you put the excavated snow back on the structure?

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Welcome. Technically you could put it back on top but would have to be careful that it did not collapse. We didn't show it but after building the pile we lit it sit for 3 or more hours to settle and harden so it would be safe. the snow freezes together when you do this. So if you shovelled it back on top you would have to keep allowing time for it to harden again before digging further. I have never tried that so not sure how it would go.....Also it was already very large for us and it didn't need to be any bigger. Thanks for stopping in. Cheers

Great job and ample, cozy and safe shelter: Heather's satisfaction is evident in her radiant smile and the girl Bella is the apple of our eye. Bye, Ivo and Wanda.

      Hey yes we actually packed it down and let it sit for a few hours first. There is a reaction that happens when the snow cristals are distributed they fuse together. It was also -15°c so that helps.

    So hypothetically if they had a Alone “all star” show where they wanted all the season winners back would you do it again? And if so would it only be if you could be with your brother or would ya solo it if that was the requirement?

    I remember those from my childhood. We never insulated ourselves from the snow on the floor. Quinzees WERE QUIET inside, and the wind chill wasn't a factor. We were more than happy to walk across a pasture and back inside the family home for a hot meal. While our bedrooms were unheated, the quilts we had made them more comfortable than winter camp life. In YOUR CASE, the MUSKOX comes to the rescue with ground insulation.

    Fun video but a lot of work. Sleep comes easy when you're exhausted from building your shelter. I guess the adage " go big or go home" applies to this video.😅
