Thanks for the video. I use the same setup with a few slight differences. 1) I use velcro (strong grip model) to hold the adapter to the helmet. No problem coming loose and easy to remove. 2) I use a usb-c cable, usb-c right angle adapter and a usb battery (ones used to charge cell phone) to power the Go-pro through the adapter charge port. The usb battery goes in my jacket pocket with the cable running up to the adapter. This solves the limited Go-pro battery life. 3) I use a Go-pro remote to control the camera. The remote will not last all day. Soon I will purchase a second remote and charge the depleted one while I use the other. The remote is attached to the handlebars and I can see the status and how long each video recording is running. Additionally, the remote has a flashing light so it is easy to monitor if the camera is in record mode.
One reason I like the Drift HD ghost it doesn't require all the extras it comes water proof just plug the mic in comes with a remote it takes pictures rapid fire pictures and the lens turns .But you can't put on front of the helmet has to be on the sides or on top . Your videos have great quality and sound.Stay safe and ""RIDE ON""
OH MY GOD. I’ve been having a huge popping and distortion problem and I have the same exact set up as you. The only thing is I had the audio setting on standard plus!!! I’m going to try to have it on standard only and pray it fixes my issue!!!!😭🙏🏻
Thanks that was an excellent video. Very insightful. I dont have go-pro but you definitely helped to figure out the basics of how to do it with my own camera.
Tim, it’s obvious a lot of work/supplies go into your videos. The end result...is it works. I know editing is where the real ‘magic’ happens, and some might want to see how you do that. However, unless you have a week, with nothing to do, it would be very time consuming to do a tutorial on editing. There’s just so much to it. All the best, Rob
Unfortunately, the GoPro mic adapters are still out of stock everywhere. I had to pay 100 bucks to a scalper on Ebay to get one. That was the cheapest price I could find anywhere.
Thanks Tim, I get the purple panda mic Tuesday and unfortunatley ordered the adapter from ebay today currently 150 bucks =( but it should be coming this week can't wait to start MOTO VLOGING on the new bike I am adding to the collection/channel .....Chippewa AKA 2018 Husqvarna 701 !!!!!!
Great info, don’t think I’ll ever motovog but still appreciate know about what u have learned and what it takes to get us ur videos. Roll on safe , two tires down, sky up.
Actually, clapping your hands 3 times in front of the cameras will ease the search for the audio spikes as you'll be able to see on the footage where the spikes would be.
I heard you mention Idaho BDR. I was in Jarbidge, NV the start of the Idaho BDR on the 4th of July. We did the Nevada BRD and It was a washed out dead end mess. Good luck with the BRD and keep us posted on that.
SENA makes a unit that attaches to the back of my hero 4's that allows me to Bluetooth to my helmet SENA mike, it all fits into a oversized case so it's all water proof, works pretty good..
hi Tim great video, I tend to have my mike to the side of the helmet..rather than in front of the mouth. it reduces breathing noises, but still picks up the voice clearly, it also helps to cut out mike buzz when your talking loud on a freeway..
As usual, great info and very useful info. I do have all the bits for moto-vlogging except that I have a different mic than the purple panda. I have a modular helmet, and so the purple panda is just not compatible. The problem for me, though, is that I have a special cable I bought that plugs directly into the slot to be used for the mic adaptor. This cable plugs into my motorcycle power point and keeps the GoPro charged while riding, without having to worry about battery life. So, I’m at a dilemma. I can fully moto-vlog or fully rely on constant power to my GoPro. I just wish that GoPro put in more thought and build a model similar to the Sena 10C... ie all-in-one. In fact, I may buy a Sena 10C once they upgrade the video quality. By the way... yes, agreed! Sugru is brilliant stuff!
PS when you come to a freshly graded road on the IDBDR that is real rough and very badly graded about 20 miles long, you might want to skip that section there is a water crossing at the end that was running fast and about 30" deep, big rocks for a bottom, it took three of us on each bike to keep them from being washed over..
Thanks for a great video! I have a similar GoPro setup to yours and the thing that bothers me the most is the constant off-center video. Any issues with that? Here's a tip for recording in wet/rainy conditions. I use "Loctite Fun-Tac Mounting Putty Tabs, 2 -Ounce" ($2 on Aamazon or any local hardware store) and mold it around the USB area and the inputs. It works very well, the only downside is it becomes more difficult removing the GoPro from its plastic housing. Not an issue for me since I download the data wirelessly and let it sit in the housting permanently
Wow buddy thanks 🙏🏻 a ton for the video I’m getting a GoPro 7 for my videos when I’m also riding as you see my UA-cam channel with me camping I also do a lot of riding and really need to Capture the great views in the areas that I’m camping so your video really taught me a lot on how to set mine up thank you so much 😎😎😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤠🤠🤠
As with all the videos man... Great job! I have some great footage from a recent trip and really wanted the wind noise eliminated and some commentary would have been a lot of fun... Been wondering how the pros do it! Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this amazing explanation. i have one question regarding moto vlogging: Do i need two gopro becoz: 1. one gopro which will be attached to the helmet all the time and while im riding, i will be making videos from that 2. second gopro so that whenever i reach some destination while riding, i can make videos with that one or only one gopro is sufficient for both the tasks (only little bit of extra mounting unmounting i have to do each time). Can u plz suggest which option i shud choose (specially when im a beginner). :)
I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that the AD converter circuitry (now in the adapter) had to be left out of the main camera to make room for the stabilization chip in the 5-up models.
Thanks for the setup info. I use gopro 5 black and will try this setup. More and more I see vloggers using sena10c integrated camera, intercom and mike. Any info about it ?.
Nice man, I've already got my setup locked in but its cool to see how others set their up. You said the tape was "ugly" but to be honest it looks pretty cool, the texture on the gaffers tape makes it look rugged lol. Keep it up, be safe on your travels. Channels like yours are inspiration and I live vicariously through your videos, one day I'll pick up an adventure bike so I dont have to put my harley through the woods when I wanna explore lol.
Hi Tim, this is a great video thanks. Also the previous video giving some behind the scenes on how you edit - a real help on something that seems a bit of a dark art to the novice! I’m over in the UK so the weather is often a challenge with camera gear in the rain. I’ve also got the go pro and want to add vlogging audio so will need to take the hit on one of the GoPro mic adaptors. Out of interest have you tried using a cable extension (usb c male with a right angle to usb c female) so you can take the adapter further away from your helmet and store in your jacket etc? Not sure if there would be any compatibility issues introducing another extension cable in between the adapter and the go pro, but would be great to know if you’ve tried this, and if it worked? Thanks!
As far as I know you can't add any extension, it won't work. It is really a huge pain, I wish GoPro would figure this one out already. Maybe on the Hero 9, hopefully
Thanks for sharing. I don't get why most of moto vlogger are using GoPro (not aerodynamic, not waterproof, huge mic adapter, ...). What happened to Drift Ghost ?
Hey Tim, thanks for the tips! This morning I ordered the purple panda mic. I have had real issues with static when I get up to speed. Hoping this will eliminate that issue. Have you ever run a power bank into the USB C port on the mic adapter? I have had mixed success with this, but for the most part, it keeps the camera on for as long as I’m riding. I run the cable from the mic adapter to the power bank in my shirt or vest pocket so it doesn’t get in my way.
Tim - Great video. Just 1 question and 1 comment - (1) I suspect that you have to use the TRS adapter on the TRRS plug on the mic- correct? I have used PowerDeWise microphone with TRRS and that did not work with the GoPro dongle. I have since bought a lav mic with the TRS plug but it only records on one channel (left) which I have to duplicate to get balanced audio. (2) On my GoPro Hero 7 Black setup I can hit the Record button with the camera OFF and it records using the external mic.
I’d be interested in knowing about the computer and other hardware you are using to edit your footage. It is time for an upgrade. I hate buying new computers. Have you tried any Bluetooth options for audio? I think there are some out there. Love the topic. Travel safe.
Tim, I been meaning to ask, what was it you used to, as remember, spray-blacken your wind screen? I assume it shaded your dash a bit more which I'm thinking about doing now that my windscreen is down where I don't have to look thru it. Hoping it might make it easier to see my dials and GPS on bright days.
I have wondered while watching your other vids what editing software you are using? You make reference to editing in this video which pushed me to ask. I used a 360 degree camera on my recent 3 corner tour trip of the US and have been editing in the cameras software to compile them into a format that will work with most moviemaking software. 12+ hours of footage has taken a wihie. I want to make several short movies with my clips and pics put to music and voiceovers etc. Recommendations?
Thanks Tim. I thought that's probably what you used. The 360 video when edited looks like any other video. You just have 360 degree angles to choose from when determining the perspective.
Alan Bowne has been for sometime... however I got mine from my local grocery stores website😎 however I just checked for you and they are now out of stock too...
BTW, did you need to connect the 3.5mm adaptor to the Purple Panda jack? I couldn't just plug in the PP directly to the GoPro audio box. I had to plug in the PP to the 3.5mm reducer and then plug that into the audio box. That's the only way I got the mic to work. Just curious. . . .
My gopro has two options when i mic is plugged in. It's either standard mic or standard mic plus. In the helmet the mic is close enough for standard mic and that way it drops more wind noise.
I just started using a hero 7 black for my motovlogs. Do you use the pro tune settings or do you use the automatic settings on it and also do you use the image stabilization?
I gave up on GoPro (which was painful because I own a 5, a 6 and two 7's plus all the accessories and about 20 batteries). That audio adapter is the biggest rip-off in the entire tech industry, not to mention that it ruins all the good stuff about the GoPro form factor. Garmin VIRB works every bit as well as the GoPros AND supports Bluetooth for the microphone. Just pair up the Senna/Cardo/etc that's already in your helmet and go! GoPro hardware would support this, but the company would rather stick you for another $50 - so the heck with them.
Thanks so much for this vid, I just came back from a bike trip and have been using gopro for a while, but never with sound. I was wondering how did GoPro poeple create the system and this adapter is truely a shity thing...and $50...just sad. I wonder if you can find a substitute (or even make one yourself:). You said that the quick capture will not record a sound from external mic, thanks for that, I would have been soooo pissed if I discovered it myself after buying all this equipement. Also, what do you do to cover the hole of a gopro to make it waterproof after connecting the adapter? Or you just don’t and when it rains you just slide the door back on? And congrats on a genius horn solution! That’s brilliant! :) Keep up the great work!
GoPro Mic Adapter Update: I found this little item on Amazon as a replacement to the GoPro Mic Adaptor.. and only $8.99 and it is in stock as of July 22. It isn't waterproof but could probably be made water resistant with a little work, at least enough so that you could get off to the side of the road and disconnect/remove it if you get caught in a sudden downpour.. I tested it on my GoPro 5 and seems to work fine, so would also guess it will work on GoPro 6 & 7 as well.. Appears to be well-made so time will tell! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075YFDJ4Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Like everyone else I can't stand that mic adaptor - I have found through searching the 'net that there is a USB-C extension cable that lets power and audio through, allowing you to put the adaptor somewhere else like a pocket or tank bag etc. The flipside is that you then have to run the helmet mic cable to that other location too. Anyway this is a link to the cable (in UK but it's sold in North America too) . I bought the 1.6ft one and it works well with my Hero 6 Black www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01FM4ZQLQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I also have the Purple Panda mic (thanks to Chaseontwowheels lol) and I find its much better than the five or six other lavalier mics I've tried in the last year or so. Gets a thumbs up from me!
Its still out of stock and ya i think this is the single most hated thing made by gopro,,,im thinking of buying gopro7,, but what if they solve this in gopro8,,so still waiting for gopro8
Great video Tim. Very helpful! Not that you have one planned at some point, but would love to see your post-processing steps sometime! Keep up the good work and ride safe!! BTW, you might check out B&H PhotoVideo (bhphoto.com) for some of the electronics and cameras you're getting from Amazon.. amazing selection although some of professional level gear can be pretty pricey.
Mic adapter STILL not available on GoPro's web site. Not available thru Amazon either. Been like that for months..... I suspect we will never see it again - and the next Hero will have a better solution for an external mic - Bluetooth anyone? So - no upgrading to a Hero 7 Black for this guy.....
Fixed my problems! Thank You!!
1. Standard Mic solution ✅
2. Don’t use quick record with mic ✅

There is another case that will allow the mic cable to attach to the bottom. it is not quite as obtrusive.

What do you think about Ruroc Atlas 2.0 helmets?

I am glad you made this video since I been curious since your last video what equipment you where using! Thanks Tim.

What do you think of the remote Tascam for audio ?
Hi Tim, this is a great video thanks. Also the previous video giving some behind the scenes on how you edit - a real help on something that seems a bit of a dark art to the novice! I’m over in the UK so the weather is often a challenge with camera gear in the rain. Thanks Tim 😊😎
Love this. Nicely done.

I haven't tried that, I carry extra batteries and they last about an hour each so that works for me. I imagine that would work though.
Tim - Great video. Just 1 question and 1 comment -
(1) I suspect that you have to use the TRS adapter on the TRRS plug on the mic- correct? I have used PowerDeWise microphone with TRRS and that did not work with the GoPro dongle. I have since bought a lav mic with the TRS plug but it only records on one channel (left) which I have to duplicate to get balanced audio.
(2) On my GoPro Hero 7 Black setup I can hit the Record button with the camera OFF and it records using the external mic.
Yes you need the adapter. It records in stereo.
I’d be interested in knowing about the computer and other hardware you are using to edit your footage. It is time for an upgrade. I hate buying new computers. Have you tried any Bluetooth options for audio? I think there are some out there. Love the topic. Travel safe.
I'll do a video about that soon. I tried BT audio recording and it works but isn't the same quality. Thanks Robin!
Great toturial!
keep it simple, love it!
This morning 7/30/19 I was able to order the 3.5 Mic adapter on the GOPRO site. No sure how long it will be available.
What Navigation software do you use on your phone. What type of phone do you use? Love your videos and comments. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man!
That was very helpful
How is your noice canceling srt up in settings?
What size sd card would you recommend for a hero 7 black? I’m looking to record around 4 hours of 4K footage, but could do with some advice 🙏

Hey Tim, thanks for another great video. I was just wondering what editing software you use??
Adobe premiere
@@FTAAdventures thank you. If your ever travel through northern Ontario, Canada. You'll have a free place to stay if you want
Hey Tim great video again. Question, the video mount you have setup with the side view, what did you use to mount that?
Theres a video on my channel about that, should be in the camera equip playlist.
Here I was wracking my brain trying to figure that shot out and you had a whole video on it! 😂 Thanks for the reply. Safe travels!
I have wondered while watching your other vids what editing software you are using? You make reference to editing in this video which pushed me to ask. I use Adobe Premiere, but I'm not sure about 360 video.
Thanks Tim. I thought that's probably what you used. The 360 video when edited looks like any other video. You just have 360 degree angles to choose from when determining the perspective.
I'd like to see your extension/selfie stick setup on the side of the bike up close. Is it something you bought or just rigged up?
he has a video on that setup
Tim, why can you not use the mic that is on the Sena, does that not work with the camera?
Not as good quality, unfortunately.
Go advice, FYI the adapter is still out of stock, even on GoPro's website

I needed the adapter, can't remember if it's TRS or TRRS but the Purple Panda comes with the adapter that you need.
Tim, What field of view do you have the go pro set to? Thank you.
Wide, not super wide though.
Forty Times Around thank you Tim
Question, besides using the standard mic option what do you use in the gopro settings for the mic audio to where you can use stereo, auto or wind?
My gopro has two options when i mic is plugged in. It's either standard mic or standard mic plus. In the helmet the mic is close enough for standard mic and that way it drops more wind noise.
Hey Tim, what application do you use for editing?

I just started using a hero 7 black for my motovlogs. Do you use the pro tune settings or do you use the automatic settings on it and also do you use the image stabilization?
I use the auto settings, thinking of playing around with that though. Stabilization I use all the time.
@@FTAAdventures thanks for the Info, I will have to try it out on my next motovlog.

Also, what do you do to cover the hole of a gopro to make it waterproof after connecting the adapter? Or you just don’t and when it rains you just slide the door back on?
And congrats on a genius horn solution! That’s brilliant! :) Keep up the great work!

I dont have a solution to waterproofing the gopro without the door. Still working that out.

Standard Mic🤦♂️ Thank you!

Hey Tim. If you travel through Northern Minnesota, hit me up please!
I bought the 1.6ft one and it works well with my Hero 6 Black

I also have the Purple Panda mic (thanks to Chaseontwowheels lol) and I find its much better than the five or six other lavalier mics I've tried in the last year or so. Gets a thumbs up from me!
Its still out of stock and ya i think this is the single most hated thing made by gopro,,,im thinking of buying gopro7,, but what if they solve this in gopro8,,so still waiting for gopro8

I wonder how many will watch and say, "What's a B Roll camera? I though he said he used GoPros." 🤣
😂😂😂
Great info. I’m tech challenged at best so I thought the horn to spike audio was brilliant. Just curious what 4 dopes disliked this video.

Ron Harshfield the ghost vid about the ghost mic adapter?
Yeah stick it to go pro
I smell an opportunity for someone to craft a much smaller mic adapter. Can’t be that hard? (Says the non-engineer rider)
Go Pro won't change a thing if people will let themselves be ripped off
More duct tape!
