My grandfather’s step dad survived the Bataan Death March from beginning to end . He’s told me the cruel acts that happened to the soldiers captured. The torture the cruel nature . He gave up any food he had to help weaker soldiers. Because if you couldn’t walk you were shot or beheaded . Woken up by the enemy just for them to play games with your life or stab you just to laugh at you . He made it home . He was a walking skeleton but he did return home . My grandfather himself was in Vietnam. The first thing he saw when he arrived was the morgue . Piles of bodies . Enemy and American. He saw so much combat . Earned his wings . Saved lives . But I’ll never forget his PTSD and how I seemed to be the only one who could snap him out of it . And how every new school year he would ask to see my history book to “see how much they sugarcoated everything again” he was a great man . Raised me with my grandmother. And always told me how war is hell and how much is kids then never knew and that I needed to know because it was apart of our family. Each war from WW1 onward . He gave my best friend his blessing for the marines he really looked up to him . And I truly believe my dad (yes I called him dad) was with him in Iraq guiding him so he could get home . He told me stories of how he felt my dad was with him especially after the explosion I saw when I had a Skype call with him . He said he heard my dads voice “get up billy , stand your ground , make it home to taisha and all of us fight through the pain” and he did come home safely

My German grandfather was called up into the army at 16 to fight in WWI. He served with men from his hometown of Bremen. Over the three years he served, most of his friends died, killed right in front of him.
