- Before any college in Texas had cheerleaders, A&M had yell leaders.
Aggie yell leaders' history goes back to at least 1906 - but it's seen some changes over more than a century.
In this video, you can learn how to lead Farmers Fight!, Old Army, Aggies! or Locomotive yells.

This is good content to show recruits as to why to not go play ball there. I don’t know how any normal guy who sees this is like “guys, you have got to teach me how to do this!”
Admittedly strange to the outside world. Throwback to a time before social media and two bits. Part of the spice of life as an Aggie on game day. 100K+ Aggies went to the trouble of learning the yells and following the signals of the yell leaders to make our crowd the most clear and dominant fan base in the country.

I've been an avid college football fan for well over 30 years and the first time I saw a real video of the Yell Team, I though it was just a spoof. Nope. It's very real and easily one of the silliest, cringe-worthy things I've ever seen. It's too bad that Paul Rueben has passed away. He could've been a great addition and asset to this nerd show. If I was a 4 or 5 star high school football recruit, there's nothing about seeing this that would make me want to go play there.
Is the 'a-a-a-ay' presumed to be A-for-'Aggies' or just a general 'yay'-type cheer? The reason I ask is that a lot of football novels and short stories from 1900-1910 give 'A-a-ay' as a cheering noise, set in New England schools. I cannot tell if this is just a representation of 'yaaaaay' or something else. Useless historical curiosity.
I think they are actually yelling ‘G-A-A-A-Y’ as in the Yell Leaders are gay. Whoop!

I went to A&M. I love the school. I always thought this was some gay shit. We will never win a national championship until we get some hot female cheerleaders. Can you imagine trying to recruit 5-star 18 year old males by going to a yell practice?
