Hey, 2024 eclipsers! Thanks for stopping by. I have some quick advice on filming this one with a drone: Don't try to capture the actual eclipse with your drone's camera.
Even if you have a gimbal that can pan up, it will only end up looking like a white dot. You can, and likely will damage your drone's camera also if you do not have the correct filter. I suggest shooting flat/down towards something, or even just the horizon, to capture the shadow/darkness as it passes over the land.
For settings -- the most important thing is DON'T use auto exposure! The camera will constantly adjust the exposure and you will not get a good darkened effect. Set it, pick the exposure while in full sunlight and then let it go. This will also allow you to just enjoy the eclipse and not spend too much time farting around with a drone.
Best of luck to you all!
Just beautiful ...beautiful john
Wow, that is an amazing video. Best thing I've seen from the eclipse so far.
Hey, your comment got featured in this article. Thanks so much for the kind words. www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/solar-eclipse-filmed-drone-amazes-11044130?service=responsive

Nice, John. I hope the Mavic don't go blind.
Nice.
Nice...
NOICE!
love the kareoke version of rocketman
A comment from tiny whoop! respect! Thanks for checking it out.
thats some nice crisp video. any special settings youre using? or edit after?
either way, great vid. love the fireworks waaay off in the background.
postshanna No post production modifications except speeding it up a bit. My Mavic was using TrueColor -- my favorite general setting. And oh yes the fireworks were a nice surprise.
I feel bad for all the people driving that didn't stop to look.
Yeah, I thought the same. 🥺
How did you set your mavic? manual or auto exposure? thanks!
Auto.
Your doing the same thing April 8th? I’ll be in Buffalo NY
Nope - I have to pass on this next eclipse, I’m afraid. Honestly if I ever did this again I would get a 360 degree camera and capture everything around it, and get a camera on the ground with audio to capture the sounds of the birds etc on the ground as things change from night to day.
That’s my plan actually. I’ll have my drone up 400ft, I’ve got LAANCE approved. Nikon camera with 600mm zoom lenses at the sun. My HD webcam connected to laptop recording as well. And my phone also recording around me.
What were the settings and filter used?
No ND filter was used for this. Unfortunately I have absolutely no recollection of what settings. Are you trying to prepare for the one coming April 8?
@JohnCuppi yes I am. I'm in upstate NY. Not sure if the sun will be too high for a drone though
Where
Dzrian Rolla Missouri area
This was in Sullivan Missouri, Rolla wasn't in the path of totality so we went to where it was.
Seriously Lacqueing awesome! I didn't know you guys traveled there. It was so amazing*
How did you make that intro
I think it was a template of sorts in Final Cut Pro.
@@JohnCuppi thanks!!! I've got alot of drones just got the air 3 gonna record the April 8th eclipse in a time-lapse and in full. Idk if I should use 70 mm or 24 mm lense though
Did you used auto settings?
Yes
Great video I've watch a few vids from this channel, made my first ever mavic edit would love some feedback and advice on how to getting better.
