We Can't TRULY Hear Cliff Burton, Here's Why

Fellow metal scholars, one thing is undeniable: the bass volume in Metallica is not on par with what it should be. I know Jason's albums are even worse, but one CANNOT say that Cliff can be easily heard. One needs to resort to EQing, Plugins, turning the volume way up... and still, you wouldn't be able to hear Cliff note for note. In order to do that, you need to find the isolated tracks online or watch a live performance.
Therefore, we can philosophize on why Metallica decided to have this approach. The answers are personal and subjective here, but I'd like to share my views. What do you think about it? Do you think Cliff should've been mixed louder?
