I first saw 7 +7 when I first came to UK in 1970. I was 7 years older than the participants and have been watching every series since.
It sadden me to hear Lynn has passed and Nick is poorly. It showed what lives are about for richer or for poorer. It was about dream, asperation, achievement, family mortality.
Neil's story is particularly interesting and inspiring. I think he should write a biography and it could become a best seller.

I have watched every series with mixed emotions, particularly as I am of a similar age. Quite often throughout the years, the coldness of the interviews left me feeling extremely uncomfortable. Regarded as subjects, they are still human beings, many experiencing very sensitive & difficult periods. I just want to thank all of those young children who participated in this project, opening up their innocent young lives to the world for decades to follow. You are all heroes as far as I'm concerned.💜

i have to agree with you. as an interviewer he doesn't come across as a warm human being. very deadpan and cold. as simon said at one point - 'you always ask me if i am WORRIED about this or that'...it was a question he asked time after time, a bit of an unimaginative line of questioning. he also seemed to put neil under pressure with unkind questions when the man was clearly struggling to answer.

Interesting interview, a tad rambling, but I was fascinated to hear Apted's thoughts on the series. I was born in 1970 and have followed it closely since about 42 up (though I remember seeing snippets of earlier episodes). A shame this interview didn't cover the fact that several participants dropped out, either temporarily or permanently. There was one who appeared in all of them but chose not to take part in 63 Up. I thought that was a shame. Anyway, I love the series and I hope we see 70 Up in 2016.

I hope the producer carries on and directs 70up. That would be an elegant way to end the series, 10 instalments from 7 to 70. The Russian and South African versions are equally as good too, although the pandemic and who knows what else appears to have halted those from carrying on to 35 and 42 respectively.

63 Up..and the UP series is the best use of film in history. And, probably will always be. "Life isn't always kind...but it continues." This is an enlightened and perfect understanding of this film, and of LIFE itself. FYI, I'm a divorced, 50+ male born and raised in USA.

Michael Apted's reality-documentary spanned several generations, and in doing so, transmitted important information that was by merit of it's candour and longevity; simply above and immune, to the fabric of false-hoods conveyed to society at large. Regrettably, too few of us will grasp the certain feeling that such a project 'barring some unprecedented-turn-of-fate', is unlikely to continue; at least with any of the integrity that Michael Apted's senses required of it.

Gays marrying, test tube babies, mobile phones, satellite TV, moon travel, these things have altered people's lives in a way he couldn't have known when he started the series. It is impossible to say how people's lives would have panned out, as the things surrounding us have changed completely, which has allowed people to take other paths which were not available before.

    • @thomasedavis
      @thomasedavis 4 роки тому +6

Dismissing Apted as "just another private school prat" is hypocritical. What justice is there in objecting to his classism by being even more classist in return? In fact, neither of his parents went to university, and they devoted what money they had to their children's education. Of course he and the films he made are products of their time, so elements of class, race, and sex undoubtedly influenced the original selection of subjects as well as their interviews. But the films betray little condescension in attitude toward them or their lots in life.
Nor should anyone label Apted as misogynistic. His sexism, which for example caused him to pointedly question the young women about boyfriends and marriage in the earlier films, was common in an era in which women were judged by the men they associated with. That's not right by our present-day standards, but it doesn't mean Apted hated women then or hates them now! It has always seemed to me that he genuinely likes the subjects of the Up Series. Moreover, he's generally quite liberal in his political and social views, as this interview makes clear.

All that aside. We question present day and even in the experiment people question rather then seeing. What interested me of it and seeing it on youtube that people looked at it as a timepiece of what was and were empathetic. But surely in those times people wasnt (some but going along with it die to peer pressure) and so framed into the system and social media trends back then, no doubt there wasnt any empathy but stratigic generalist intelligenuals that pointed out comparison, but not seeing the person as watching one of them as I did. Even today people would judge. And what is judgement is it's a valid populer argument within that condition of a "community"
I see that people go through stuff. And it was a daring challange to show this. Becouse what it was like then and what it's like now.
I get the impression that we are all want to be accepted and loved and in this sociaty cold and calculated, as it is convenient and safe we are depending how the person feels. We are all different people. And we see people that changes over time with a photo time capsule. Its happy but sad. It's really showing how people feel inside if people really care? We do, but there is in the late 20s and 30s that are indifferent becouse just as everyone feels they cant express themselfs.
I feel that when we grow up. We are taught to not care about other people if that is unacceptable. It doesn't conceive that value but crushes it by its front and helping advice. What people don't do is fit the shoe where people live exactly and knowing what that could be done. People wont open up becouse of accusations and spiral controversial by audiances. Honestly, governments being dictators its audiances eyes and ears and how it conceives is, weary I for one don't trust and yet work among all relatives.

Why is the interviewer yelling at us the whole time?

RIP Michael Apted. A great career and, of course, the UP series was and is an extraordinary, moving and very beautiful record of human existence. Though a remarkable film maker, Apted's political views were neither sophisticated, nor accurate nor attuned to the viewpoints of the British electorate, and far from opposing Brexit as he asserts, they embraced the idea of leaving the EU both in a national referendum, and in a general election primarily fought on this issue. Successful artists have no greater insights than anyone else on political matters, though you would never know this from their pronouncements on myriad issues.

Michael is not his usual strong articulate self - seems to be rambling and speaking in generalities. Such a heavy-handed anti-conservative stance from both participants - "conservatives have stripped away the social safet nets leaving the labor situation we have now , so one-sided, so slanted on both sides. And Michael saying education was better, if he's referring to equality of access - maybe, quality of education? well on this side of the pond i know college students who go to Princeton who don't know where rhode island the state is or even the most basic or simplest of things.

One of the participants told me that Michael Apted is seriously ill. There was a lot of uncertainty as to whether 63-Up would be made.

Wasted opportunity. Brilliant man sadly wasted with a subpar interviewer. May he rest in peace.

7:00 He talks about them as if they were lab rats. HIS lab rats. 11:30 They dared to criticism him because they had a bit of power and HE found it amusing...is he for real? How interesting that this man spent so much time making other people so self aware and he has none. Patronizing...unbebloodyleavable.

It was inevitable that the observer would become part of the experiment and I'm sure he must have been aware of this as the series grew from a ratings idea to a bona fide social experiment. Like all 'creators' he becomes defensive when criticized and perhaps he should be allowed this indiscretion. After all is said and done, and the last of these 'subjects' is gone, I think it will prove to be the most important documentary film about the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st ever to be produced. It isn't a stretch to think this will still be viewed in hundreds of years time and regarded as the most unbiased account of life in our times. And not just in the UK because the seismic political shifts away from a caring model to more ruthless and profit orientated societies are a global phenomena. I hope the program continues until the final one of the group dies because what happens to these people in their old age will provide the starkest evidence for what has become of an over optimistic plan to create a caring society.

I mean this is a sociological experiment in a many ways but I think he proves your opinion wrong at 28:50
He doesn't let his emotions overshadow their stories, and he allows them to be frank with him, I think that shows that he cares a great deal for these people, even if he doesn't come off as an emotional guy - I think he's just very direct.

It's a great documentary, but Jackie has been right to call him out on some of the questioning. Even at 21 you can see her cringing when asked if she has met enough men, and as she got older she calls out the sexism for what it is. I think Apted does have some unconscious class and sex bias, and she's quick to spot it.

It's a social experiment. So they are subjects.
