    These are fantastic fast growing evergreens. I planted three last summer, about 1' tall, & in less than one season they've grown 3' tall, needing very little maintenance. Dense & pretty leaf pattern too. Looking for a few more this year, they're doing so well. And totally agree ~ don't pass these up when you find them.

    I planted one of these after being in love with the scent this spring growing in my neighborhood. Reminded me of lilac. Those in my neighborhood are in pretty dense shade, but the nursery tag said full sun. 🙄. So, I only bought one for my mostly shady spot. I have neighbors at the back and one side I want to go away, so I think I'll buy some more! Thanks for the video and letting me know that a shady spot is fine!

    It is a aggressive, invasive, non native plant that with send runners out into your landscape and is very difficult to control. It is taking over our native forests and is edging out native understory trees like dogwood and redbud. This process is eliminating butterflies and therefore songbirds from our landscapes. It is on the pest species list in several states. Many nurseries no longer carry it.

      The ones you buy now are sterile. They have made them sterile for over 10 years now. I have had mine since 2016. I have no new ones popping up, at all. I have let mine grow without ever pruning it. I think that maybe a different variety, you are speaking of. They have more than one variety. I absolutely love mine.

      I have no new ones popping up. They can be hard to find now, or rather I haven't looked for them. You may have to get them from a nursery. Make sure you get the wavy leaf one. They put out flowers in the spring that smell Amazing. I tried to make perfume out of the flowers. I was not successful. I will master it one of these days 😊 They will make a good privacy screen. I say plant them about 3- to 5 feet apart.

      "All species of privet continue to be used in landscaping, particularly as ornamental hedges. The same vigorous regrowth and dense foliage that are prized in horticulture are what make privet so difficult to control in natural areas. Some nurseries market cultivated variations, or cultivars, of privet that *claim to be sterile and thus do not produce fruit that could spread to surrounding areas. However, this claim does not consider the fact that yard plants may become fertilized by pollen from naturalized individuals or other genetic combinations, resulting in viable seeds.* It is better to avoid introducing plants known to be invasive into your landscape; seek native alternatives instead."

    Thanks Jim, I first learned about Ligustrum at an SC home we bought and have now found a few on our GA property. In addition to what you have said -- very drought tolerant, can be formed into a nicely decorative tree shape of sorts, green all year in the proper zones. Great video, this is the kind of channel I've been looking for, subscribed!

    i LOVE LOVE LOVE this plant. The smell is AMAZING! But I hear so much grief.... Oh its invasive etc, etc. I read an article that they cultivated the new plants to be sterile so that they dont spread. I planted 2 and have no new ones popping up. When I first planted it. It was about 2 feet, now they are both 7ft tall or more. I LOVE the smell so much. I brought another one for inside my yard. I planted some Holly to block my neighbors, and they are taking forever to grow, and they are suppose to be fast growing. I wish I would have gotten these instead

    Best video I've found on this plant, thanks for the knowledge! We just purchased 16 of them to cover the ugly backyard concrete wall. I setup drip system for all of them and have it trigger twice a day for 2 mins at interval days. I was wondering when and how I should be pruning these so they go wide and high as they grow? It's still fairly new. Wondering if I just let them grow out or I need to prune them somehow so they cover the wall as they grow.

      How are they doing? I did similar with about 30 along my fence but some are struggling, just not as big as the others. I think instead of pop up sprinkler I may have to add a drip line. What type of drip line did you do? Medium flow? I am in central Florida and it does get pretty hot here. I just want the 6 that are struggling to do better, a couple are so bad they only have a stem left.

    May I ask you a question about the Ligustrum Recurvifolium in this video? Towards the end of the video around the 3:28 mark you show your mature plant by then fence. The screening up high is fabulous. That said, can you help me understand what is happening below the fence line with respect to foliage and screening? Is this plant mostly trunk/stalk/stem that does not offer the same level of screening down low that it does up high? Or does the foliage extend to the ground in more bush/ hedge like fashion? Its hard to tell since the plant appears to be on the other side of the fence but looking through the planks it does not seem to offer much screening from 0 (ground) to say 5 feet? Correct or not so much? I am looking for something in Zone 7a (Nashville) to screen from the ground up to 10-15 feet (20 max). Can you share your thoughts on whether or not this plant offers ground (lower level) screening? Thanks - your vids are very good.

    Jim, I'm looking to plant a screen between me and my neighbor. I'm in Zone 8 and the area i want to plant is in a wooded area about 10 feet from open land. The neighboring property is open and this is also on the south property line where it should get the most sun. I would really like to mix some Nellie Stevens Holly, Ligustrum Recurvifoliums, and perhaps a Leyland Cypress to not give it a mundane look. I'm concerned with the plants getting enough sunlight and being able to thrive. I know the holly and the ligustrum do well in shade. There is a shadow from the house on that side in the mornings and there a few trees around them like crape myrtle and oaks. The issue we have is the leaves have lots of yellow patches and growth is appears to be slow and stragly. They dont have many leaves in some areas. I aadjusted the watering sprinklers as I thought the patches were a fungus encouraged by overwatering but it has not helped much. How do I resolve the yellow patches issue and how can I get it to grow more lush and full. The only other plant choice we have ala HOA is Oleander.

    Hello, I love your channel. How long would it take for one of these plants to reach a 6 foot size with ideal conditions and care? Thank you!

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 років тому

      Well there are a lot of factors involved in that from how big the plants are when they are planted, soil type, heat, cold, fertilizer, water, and so forth. But I would think you would get a solid 12-18 inches of growth a year.

  • @kimwilliams4853

    What tree would you recommend planting with these? I need a screen for a neighbor who has brought in about 6 feet of dirt to build there land up, so their land is higher than mine. I was considering a row of these (or waxleaf ligustrum) and a few River Birch to give more height (even though they are not evergreen). Zone 7, full sun, next to a ditch that fills with saltwater during extremely high tides.
    Thanks for any advice you can give me!

      Chindo Viburnum and maybe a holly like Nellie Stevens

    Anyone know if these are tolerant of being transplanted? We're in Wilmington, NC zone 8a/b. We have several that were put in 2 years ago and are partially shaded by Crepe Myrtle so not growing very fast and looking thin. Mild winter this year so thinking about moving them.

      Sure, but if they grow together tightly the Ligustrum will cause thin places in the arborvitae. I prefer Ligustrum and upright hollies together

      Yes, curly leaf Ligustrum has contorted leaves and grow kinda slow. Super interesting plant. Ligustrum recurvifolium gets big fast.

      +Bob the waxleaf ligustrun get bigger than the recurvifolium and are harder to keep orderly, but I have both in that screen. It's been there 15 years

      I was told that var texanum is smaller than regular L. japonicum, so are you saying that taxanum is still bigger and harder to keep orderly than recurvifolium?? I have access to both and need to make a decision on which to buy to put between my back yard and the alley. Which do you recommend?

    • @JimPutnam

      Bob I have five different things in my screen. I would do both in a pattern. Keeps from having it all wiped out by a future problem.

    What is the difference between this plant and a privet plant? Would like to find something that grows in zone 5 that is like this, and grows quickly.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  7 років тому +1

      Some people will call this Privet, but this is a Japanese Ligustrum. Most of the time the Chinese Ligustrum is called Privet with the smaller leaves. There are unfortunately not a lot of broadleaf evergreen shrubs for zone 5. More conifers and deciduous shrubs typically.
