  • I do a quick test of the flammability of glow fuel. This is done in an open glass container and not in a fuel tank installed in an airplane. The purpose is to demonstrate that glow fuel CAN be ignited but is HIGHLY unlikely in normal day to day RC glow airplane operations.

Excellent video! You not only demonstrated the ignitability but also the main danger: buring with a (near) invisible flame, and without sound... Which makes it a very nasty thing because it can burn undetected behind your back and set fire to other things completely unexpected....
BTW: the yellow colour you saw in the low daylight conditions is due to the oil in the fuel. Straight methanol burns very pale blue.

rigididiot Nope, the color is due to the nitromethane.

it seems a little less vigorous burn than say rubbing alcohol. The oil probably holds it back to some extent. It is still alot safer than gasoline.

I should send you a photo of one of my control line planes, I named it Burnie . Not sure how I did it, I think with the glow plug clip

I haven't seen it in a while, but something that always bothered me was people refueling their planes while smoking. Maybe not a huge risk, but IMHO they were pushing their luck.

An EXTREMELY low risk of fire if someone is smoking while fueling an airplane with glow fuel.
