No joke, I got home from work, looked around my kitchen, and thought "what a beautiful day to drink a smash. Let me see if Anders has a video for that" and I log onto UA-cam, and behold! This top-tier video had dropped 6 minutes ago. Thanks for the great content, Anders, and thanks for your psychic powers!
I just turned 21 in October and I can’t drink beer because I have celiac, but I’ve quickly found that the Whiskey smash is one of my favorite cocktails
The Rum and Gin ones definitely have my attention the most, followed by the Peach Tequila one. Lets be real though, I'm probably gonna be making all of them in the near future!
I didn't even think I liked whiskey until recently, but I can't say I've had a better drink than the Bourbon Blackberry Smash, using a proper dark Canadian maple syrup. What an amazing blend of flavours. Exquisite!
Not sure if ginger is considered a herb or not but that would probably work well in the strawberry Basil rum smash. But as far name suggestions I’m going to call the Blueberry Thyme Smash the Thyme Machine as a nod to both Dr Who Tardis (blue) and the Milwaukee classic phrase name for ATM machines ,TYME Machine. Though I think I’ll swap the simple syrup for honey.
Hi Anders. Great recipes as always. Did you change your video equipment/lighting recently? The videos used to look rich and bold in colour but now there is a more light wash off kind of look to the videos. Just curious!
The one with blueberries and thyme should be called Thyme After Thyme (because first you shake thyme up with the other ingredients, then you strain it and add a thyme sprig at the end).
I watched this, put my kids to bed, and told my wife I had to go to the store before it closed to buy fruit and herbs. I was not disappointed. Blackberry mint was good, but peach sage just amazing!
Peach and Sage alongside the Bourbon Blackberry Smash are definitely going to be explored this summer. I was not aware of smashes but now you've started something. Thank you Anders!
If you can find arctic blueberries from Alaska or Canada, they have purple flesh and a whole heck of a lot more flavour than the white flesh, borderline flavourless variety you normally find in stores
@@TKGentryArt I believe they might also be sold as bilberries in the US? Might find some in the frozen section, there are some finnish companies that have a really good method for freezing them where they preserve both flavour and healthy anti-oxidants and the like
Ok this bourbon blackberry smash is one of the best cocktails I’ve had in a long while. Sweet and tart, refreshing. Delicious. Thank you for this Anders!
Local blackberries are so ripe and juicy right now here in Oregon. I made the Bourbon Blackberry Smash tonight with Four Roses and my wife said it was the best cocktail I've ever made. Thank you!
See now these cocktails are my jam - it’s the right time of year and you know what, all I’m missing is some fruit rather than an obscure spirit that’ll cost me £40 to have gathering dust until the next time I make something really specific…… nice, I’ll be making all of these, thanks Anders 👌🏻
Awesome content. I really appreciate your highlighting the versatility of the smash formula and encouraging your viewers to explore. Btw, I also thought at one point that I’d invented the gin basil smash 😂
Made the bourbon blackberry and mint smash tonight and damn was that delicious. We only had frozen blackberries on hand but they worked well. Next time we host something we're planning on getting the ingredients for all four so we can provide the option of each.
What I love about this video and this idea is that we're given the original base of the Whiskey Smash, and we're now given the opportunity to change things up a bit while keeping that same base. I think I might just go out tomorrow to buy a few different fruits/berries and try out these. Maybe not all... We'll see :)
I'm definitely getting some fresh fruit to try these tonight! I think it would be great if you do a video on adapting a couple of classic cocktails into an icecream recipe! I've tried doing a couple with liquid nytrogen and have enjoyed it a lot, but certainly would be awesome to have a video with your adaptations since you have a great sense of taste and knowledge. Obviously could be a recipe that could be made with a regular ice cream maker. Hope you give it a thought. Cheers! And have a great weekend.
Sage can be mild? Some sage advice - I've found that it can be one of the most powerful herbs, and a little can go a very very long way. Maybe we have different sages.
It would be cool to have all 4 spirits, 4 herbs, 4 sweeteners, and 4 fruits ready to go at a party and you get to choose your smash combo. Or put them on a randomizer. 256 different drinks right there.
I am planning a cocktail dinner party but was thinking about cocktails I can easily batch. How did it go making individual smashes? We're you at the bar all evening?
@@brianherman503 I made 2 cocktails at a time for the smashes. I think it was the most time consuming of all the cocktails I made. I started with this one as my guests arrived, so no one was waiting too much.
Hey Anders! The bourbon and maple syrup combo is definitely straight from heaven, and then you throw in blackberries! Have you tried the Second Circle? Bourbon, Port, angostura bitters and maple syrup. It’s become go-to cocktail, especially with a rye-heavy bourbon.
I make a really similar blueberry smash that I call a Blimey. Basically the same recipe, but swap out the simple syrup for ginger liqueur. Adds more proof, but hey, it's summer!
Hey Anders. Great videos! I make the blackberry smash with Redemption Bourbon. Delicious. I make the strawberry basil smash with Mount Gay XO rum and maple syrup. Delicious. Keep up the good work.
I was intrigued by this video because SMASH in brewing means "single malt single hop" and wanted to find out what it means in cocktails ... turns out something entirely different...
Hi Anders! It’s been a while since I’m around here, back to Pandemic and I’d say you give me a new hobby! This clip is awesome, I’ve tried now two of four (Bourbon Blackberry and Blueberry Thime) and are really really amazing flavors… what about “The Herbal Berry Smash”. Regards from Monterrey, Mexico 🇲🇽
Great video Anders! Thanks for the Tequila idea for the wife. I love using Rosemary and Gin. I did an Elderberry Jam Gin Smash a few weeks ago. Great way to use up extra jam or preserves.
The bourbon smash was the first recipe of yours that I've made and holy shit was it good. And I usually go for more booze, less fruit. Only change I made was using a bourbon barrel maple, would definitely recommend.
I'm confused about the lemon prep for the blackberry smash. You said you got rid of the extra pith, but then you also said muddling expresses the oils from the peel... but wouldn't you need to remove the peel to then remove the pith? If I'm missing something obvious I apologize.
Tried all 4 on my flatmates last weekend. Blackberry and Strawberry were huge hits with everyone. The Blueberry flavor was too minimal and overpowered by the Thyme they said.
Didnt have any maple or simple Syrup for the Blackberry smash. Used orgeat instead. Not perfect but does the job. Its way too hot outside to go to the store. Tried the Strawberry-Basil-Smash today and damn, it is delicious. Would have guessed I like gin and bourbon more but I think the rum wins here
When are you doing shots ? I recommend the romanian cozonac 😂 It's a drink made after our traditional cake with equal parts baileys, jaggermeister and stroh 80. People have to try this haha
I was positive 3/4 of an ounce of maple in the Blackberry Smash was going to overpower it. No way! As someone who finds maple syrup overpowering, outside of plate of pancakes and bacon, this is one of the best uses of it in a cocktail that I've had!
I got a good recommendation for you to cover. Im from Maryland originally and the Orange Crush is a goto summer drink. The story goes that the Orange Crush was invented at this bar called Harborside, in OC MD but im not 100% sure .
I never comment on any bartending video like this but this video was awesome, every drink you made sounds amazing. I make drink’s similar to these. Ill mix peach and thyme, blueberry and mint, gin cucumber lime mint…awesome job
Just as a bit of constructive feedback, maybe explain to the viewer what a "smash" is. I promise not everyone is going to know. Personally, I had to look it up and I've been drinking for over 3 decades. Not sure if it's a region thing, but it would still be nice to have a quick explanation in the video.
"Blueberries are rather light in flavor" The commercial stuff, yes. Because they are not really blueberries. If you have the opportunity to get the real stuff from the woods in summer, there's nothing "light" about the flavor.
Let's all go sober into that long weekend and come out completely smashed (yep, I should work on my dad-joke game...). Awesome video to help with that.
Alright this convinced me to try and make some cocktails for the first time. They were all simple amazing! Thank you! Just trying to figure out how to strain it out better, keeps getting clogged and takes a while :P
Smashing combo suggestions, thanks for the video! I don't want to sound like a troll, I'm more of a botanist lol, but the thyme you have looks more like rosemary, especially the garnish, I'm sure it's still tasty but it makes all the great name suggestions inaccurate. To be fair there's several species and cultivars or thyme, but mostly they have rounder leaves. Rosemary has leaves reminscent of evergreen needles.
What maple syrup are you using are you making it your own or buying it. Normally for my taste maple ovr powers a cocktail? 22ml seems like a lot but my just be what I am using?
Very nice drinks. I do have a question about using the citrus peel in the drink. Where I live most citrus fruit is treated with anti fungus chemicals and the peels are considered inedible. How do/would you deal with this?
Big fan and a big thanks to you and arigato to Az for great work. Any chance you’d consider doing a video on a drink with strega? It’s a great liqueur.

Absolutely
another episode for virgin smashes :D ?
Mmm gin smash.
I’m sure someone already offered this but just in case… the blueberry thyme smash should be called “Thyme for the blues”

Summer Thyme Blues
The one with blueberries and thyme should be called Thyme After Thyme (because first you shake thyme up with the other ingredients, then you strain it and add a thyme sprig at the end).
I vote for Blues Thyme
