Brad nailed right at the beginning. Huey Lewis pays tribute to early Rock and Roll in most of their music.
Definitely thought there would be a reaction when Elvis literally was in the video... Brad had every right to do a victory lap there.
He’s singing about the heart of Rock and Roll meaning the birth of it. The origins of Rock is prevalent in all genres of Rock and Roll.
Exactly!
I would say 'core' rather than 'birth' - the Essentials.
Sadly, rock is dead
Yeah, I think we have to think about the time this song came out. It was shortly after the disco crazy, and during the big hair metal bands. There wasn't really a niche for that "old school" rock and roll sound at that time. And unfortunately maybe less today.
@@Brandi6666 it's definitely NOT dead. Nearly all of the older rock bands are still touring and "some" still recording.
These guys had such a high energy vibe in concert. Just a straight jam the entire time. Good times 👍
Same sentiment as “It’s Still Rock & Roll To Me” by Billy Joel! “Hot funk, cool punk, even if it’s old junk…” Love Huey. And Billy.
As a kid this was one of my favorite albums. "Sports" was one of the best selling albums of the decade. Great album!
Huey Lewis is great…underrated musician in my opinion.
My favorite song back then from them was "I wanna New Drug". Back in the 80s Huey Lewis was a lot of fun to watch and his voice is great.
Just a great entertainer that led the group, but the group was just as much involved as Huey which made them a product that was easy to market! They were a great live in concert when I saw them back in 1985 and held nothing back!
Was Great. He no longer tours since early 2020. had tickets that March and was canceled due to throat problems. lucky to have seen him 4 or 5 times. His concerts were Electric. He no longer tours.
There was not a bad song on "Sports" album. One of my favourite albums ever.
My all time fav Huey song is "Bad is Bad"... To me, that song never gets enough recognition.
"Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically."
P. Bateman
Came here looking for that. 😆
youre now on a watchlist.
As great as the Sports album was, I still think "Do You Believe in Love" was their best song.
Their album "Sports" might as well be named a greatest hits. There is not a single "filler" song on it. I literally can't say which one I like best. But I'd love to see you guys react to "Bad is Bad." I think it would be a great one to do.
The heart of Rock n Roll is about the foundation of rock music as we know it. When you the rock groups of the day and today who influenced them you'll hear Chuck Berry, Elvis, etc. Even groups like AC/DC who are considered "Hard Rock", they were influenced by those individuals as well as legendary blues players. So, when you listen to the groups back in the 80s which are depicted in the video, like metal bands and new wave, they still have that influence from the earlier times.
For a couple years in the '80s Huey Lewis and the News ruled the airwaves and remember AC/DC had a bagpipe solo
Probably the most overrated band of the era- it was really that one song 'The Power of Love' in the Michael J Fox movie Back to the Future that led to their ridiculous chart success. Never understood why they were more popular than outfits like Concrete Blonde or Lone Justice who produced songs like 'Still in Hollywood' or 'Dixie Storms'. All down to exposure from a hit film.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Heart & Soul" and "I Want A New Drug"!!! Just the most fun rock n roll band!!
Before the name Rock-n-Roll was given to the mew style of music in the early 1950s, it was a euphemism for sex, hence I’m assuming where the “roll” comes into play. Back to the music - although they came 30 years later, Huey Lewis and The News were a great RnR band and unlike the more angry Punk movement that helped put RnR’s original rawness back into Rock (which I love btw), Lewis and Company brought back the fun and harmony of that era’s music with superb songcraftmanship and polish. One of my favorite acts of the 80s!
Time to listen to "Hip to be Square"....the perfect '80s song!
One of the major influences of Rock-n-Roll is the Blues. Everyone from Chuck Berry, Elvis, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, The Beetles, and many others has cited how vital it was to their musical development. Music will never die, like evolution, it will always evolve.
This song and one's like Bob Seager's Old Time Rock n Roll are homages to the days when rock was new and changed the music scene. I love it when artists appreciate those that laid the groundwork before them.
When I was a kid, my parents only had a handful of 'new' records. Sports is one of the albums my dad bought, so I listened to this one a lot. Its one of those songs that takes me back to being a kid when it comes on.
Same, my dad would play this in the car on cassettes and when I heard the heartbeat I would get excited because it was such a great album to listen to.
love Huey. i respect bands that use a wide variety of instruments like *Huey Lewis* and *Chicago*
Love Huey Lewis and the News, they just make you want to smile and get on the dance floor. Hope you take a listen to some other great tunes by them like, I Wanna a New Drug, Heart and Soul, If This Is It,Honky Tonk Blues, just can't go wrong. Thanks Brad and Lex.
As a kid, all of my knowledge of America's cities stemmed from this song.
I've loved this band since the 80s. They've got some great tunes.
The term "Rock and Roll," was coined by a radio DJ in the mid 1950s, after he heard, and saw "Elvis," "Little Richard" and the other pioneers of this new music genre. It was a sexual connotation, to the way the artists (mostly Elvis) shook their hips and moved around on stage. The DJ's name was "Allen Freed" I believe he was a radio DJ in Philadelphia, but I'm not totally sure.
Cleveland and then big in New York. Lost his job in payola scandal
Huey Lewis was the guy you didn't know recently, when you watched We Are the World for the 2nd time. To me this is one of the greatest rock and roll records ever made.
This song should be required as one of the first 10 tracks reactionary channels must do to start off with, as it professes that no matter the genre of Rock, its heart is still Rock n Roll. This would set the tone for how genres emerged, morphed, and fell off or merged back to the base of Rock n Roll, and for those genres still going, how they still hold at their core, Rock n Roll. I think it would make for better reactions when viewing tracks as not just a reflection of the band at that moment in their paths, but also the genre and Rock n Roll.
The main thing to bring away from this song is that even though rock and roll evolves, it's STILL THAT SAME OLD BACK-BEAT AND RHYTHM. And we love it.
That KMET font in the background during the LA/Hollywood portion
(Although I was more of a KROQ guy.)
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
I've always loved Huey Lewis, and not just because he has a cool last name.
Agreed. The News is a pretty cool last name.
@@Osprey850 I see what you did there. 😉
"Take it away Bruuuuuuuucccceee".
All I think of when I hear this song 😂
This is the absolute quintessential Huey Lewis and The News 80s song that made me dig the band - way more than I Want a New Drug ever did. If This Is It, too. Great Doo-Wop, A Capella, Rock & Blues band! Whatta voice!
Huey was in We Are The World with Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes
Hey guys can y'all check out "I've been waiting for a girl like you" by foreigner
The whole album "Sports" this song was on is a classic.
Huey Lewis and The News, a great San Francisco band with very catchy and memorable songs.
Marin county
Ahhh KMET! Whooya!!
Back in the 80's when this song came out many people thought rock and roll was dying. It was right in the middle of the new wave/techno-pop/hip-hop heyday with synthesized bass lines and drum machines instead of more conventional instruments. Huey came out with an old school rock and roll album. This song was his reassurance to the listener that the heart of rock and roll was alive and well all across the country despite what was popular on the radio at that time.
That’s IT‼️100 likes for your comment. 🎵For the times, they “seemed” to be changin’. 🎶
Such a great, fun band. Wish he could still perform. 😥❤
Huey Lewis and the News was my first ever rock concert back in high school. They were such a tight band.
Love this band! Thanks guys!
They are the best! I’ve seen them live, three times. Growing up, my mom’s always liked the music - and had a crush on Huey… well… HAS one lol They’re fun.
What a great band is all I can say! I’m not gonna recommend any song as they are already listed……so play them! Huey Lewis and the News was “Big Time”, but unfortunately Huey has almost completely lost his hearing! Saw them in “85 at an outdoor concert and it was packed and they rocked the place out!
Power of Love from Back to the Future soundtrack is classic.
They had a few songs in the movie "Back to the Future" which I think Lex would love with her old soul, especially with her love of the 80s. Movie from the 80s time-traveling to the 50s. It's a fun way to listen to some music between generations through the eyes of a teen jumping into your parent's teen years. Marty performing "Johnny B. Goode" for the 50s crowd then transitions into a Pete Townshend-esque riff is truly iconic for me! A fun look at how music would sound in one major time jump. Huey Lewis and the News had the perfect sound for that setting!
They say that each generation sees an evolution of youth popular music. In the mid 1950's we saw the explosion of a new form pf music called Rock and Roll, which became extremely popular with the youth of that generation. It was so extremely different to the music that their own parents listened to and was broadcast on radio. A new industry was born. We saw the creators of this genre such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis transform this music form into what might be considered Rhythm and Blues today. This song pays tribute to the early days of Rock and Roll, as it opened the door to ever evolving versions of Rock music, but it still have that heart of Rock and Roll.
Huey Lewis and the news were a great band. His voice with a sax is awesome.
That was a great impression of AC/DC “s lead singers by Brad. 😂. Mad props 4 that
I still remember the first time hearing Huey Lewis. I was hooked.
This is a truly pure rock n roll band. Stomp your feet and clap your hands. Get up on your feet and dance.
Yes I agree definitely y'all need to check out I want a new drug by Huey Lewis and the News
Lex is a ray of sunshine
You guys need to go to the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland and go live.
Huey Lewis and the News was the sound of the 80's. Alot of other artists or bands get credit, but Huey was on top.
Loved the harmonies and the sax playing from this band in the 80s 🎷
It’s cool to see you students of rock and roll catching on… you’re learning!! Good job…
Huey Lewis and the News is a such a tight band, with great melodies and arrangements.
Definitely do Huey Lewis "I want a new drug"! He sued Ray Parker Jr for ripping the bassline for "Ghostbusters".
Unfortunately HUEY has hearing damage and can't sing anymore, Dave Grohl says he has extensive hearing damage as well 🎸
Great Great band
My baby rocks me with a steady roll. It’s a euphemismbfor sex and always has been
There's Soft Rock, Rock and Roll, and Hard Rock. They're considered three different genres.
Peace, Love!!
Chuck Berry put the "Roll" in Rock & Roll when he released his song ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC in 1957.
Speaking of L.A. you should react to Randy Newman's "I Love LA" video.
Is the only GREAT band i realy❤️🔥 like after HARD ROCK and HEAVY METAL🔥🎩🎼🎸🎶🎶🎶✌️
Lewis played harp on Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous album, plus Phil Lynott's solo records.
I just freaking love this tune...and I don't know why...:)
Rock n' Roll is sex... the music adopted the moniker from lyrics about rockin' and rollin' all night with your baby...
It's called rhythm and blues...early rock and roll...it all is really based on the same thing...kickass! Rock on!
AC/DC begin in 1973. This song has to do with the heart of rock and roll from the very beginning....which is the 50s.
Actually Brad, ACDC has a song called "ROCK AND ROLL AINT NOISE POLLUTION " !! I guess that would be their version of The Heart of Rock and Roll LOL
I saw them for the first time on Huey's 34th birthday at Pine Knob, MI 1984. They played the entire SPORTS album except You Crack Me Up and Honkeytonk Blues. I love this band, especially 1980-1991.
The Rock In Roll History Museum in Cleveland Ohio,
Huey Lewis & the News was the first concert I ever bought tickets to. I saw them in 1985 (I was 18) at the old Boston Garden. Spectacular show and the band was SUPER tight.
classic! ♥
The Heart of Rock and Roll is the beginnngs of rock and roll which was Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis, etc. THAT is ROCK and ROLL, NOT Heavy metal, which always drove me crazy when people refer to that as "ROCK AND ROLL" The term "ROCK AND ROLL" was coined by CLEVELAND disc jockey ALAN FREED and he hosted the first ever major rock concert called the "MOONDOG CORONATION BALL" here in my hometown of CLEVELAND (home of the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME) in 1956. THANKS HUEY for mentioning "CLEVELAND" in your song!
The roll is the swing. Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill is a great example.
From the #FourStarAlbum released on this day in 1983 #Sports #TodayInMusicHistory #MusicHistory #MandatoryListen #MustHave #80sRock #HueyLewisandtheNewsHistory #MusicIsLife
For me, The Beatles were the greatest and last Rock N Roll bands......
There's Rock and Roll (blues oriented), then there is 'Rock' which is no-rules sound making.
Hi B&L., I love Huey Lewis & The News, lots of good songs.. Here is some trivia for U,
Mr. Huey & his Harmonica are on lots of songs, other people's songs.. ♠W.G.
Chuck Berry to me is rock n' roll. Do some Chuck Berry. Carol, Maybelline, Little Queenie, Johnny B Goode, whatever. He's shown in this video doing his famous duck walk while plahying the guitar.
You should definately do a rock and roll theme and learn more about the style. With artists like Bo Diddley, Del Shannon, Bill Haley, Cliff Richard, Dion, Ritchie Valens, The Diamonds, Curtis Lee, John Ashley, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, The Jodimars, Freddie Bell and the Bellboys, Carl Mann, Ernie K-Doe, Ruth Brown, The Coasters, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, The Clovers, Rusty Draper and many others.
When I was much, much younger I thought it was The Heart of Rock n Roll is in Cleveland. Lol
Take note of all the black and white film, 50's, 60's.. the hair, clothes and dance moves... You have Elvis in there, Chuck Berry... Pioneers, back then they called it Rock n' Roll.. Huey and the band mirrored the look as a nod to the era, Rock n' Roll, where it all the DooWop groups, girl groups like the Shirelles, all of it...
Sports was third cassette that I bought when I was young after Thriller and Weird Al Yankovic in 3d. Twisted Sister Stay Hungry was 4th and Ratt Out of the Cellar was 5. After that I stopped remembering.
Absolutely right. Early Elvis & others in the 50's were Rock * Roll. After The Beatles & the British Invasion it was Rock!
Speaking of early Elvis, how about giving us some "Blue Suede Shoes" or "That's Alright Mama" or for something really early, simple & raw, "Milk Cow Blues"??
💙☮💙
If you did not know, that was Chuck Berry doing his "duck walk". You have to know about Chuck Berry, right?
Alan Freed coined the term "rock n roll" as a DJ in Cleveland I think? Describing the Blues and R&B music he played as a DJ. That's a poorly paraphrased version of it anyways!😂 Nice AC/DC impersonation Brad!!! 😈
Rock & Roll had sexual connotations when it was named. What do people do in bed.... Rock & Roll baby!
I like in one of the versions he mentions Montreal. Where i’m living now. Yes they showed Elvis, The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens , Chuck Berry and more.
Fun fact: Rock n Roll meant sex. Rocking and Rolling all night long. 😋 This is my favorite Huey Lewis song.
"Rock and Roll" came from an old African American, down home term, referencing: "They were a rockin' and a rollin'!" You can guess what that means.
Original Rock and Roll music was just speeded up Blues Music.
A lot of the White community was generally afraid of this new, wild, ethnic, sexually charged, "Rock n' Roll" music, infiltrating into the White mainstream radio.
Which it did despite efforts to stop it. Go figure! LOL!
Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry and Little Richard and many others, ram-rodded it into history.
What's interesting, is that calmer, mellower music from crooners like Bobby Vinton, became popular and almost killed Rock and Roll...
...until The British Invasion, spearheaded by The Beatles brought it back. After that, it morphed into every type of Rock each new band would produce.
Rock and Roll is now just a sub-genre of ROCK.
When you think Rock 'n' Roll think Chuck Berry!
You should really check out the Hard Rock casino in Tampa👍👍
Classic from my teenager years. Yep. Raised by the beginning of Mtv. Good Stuff ! Early 80s is when cable started for me. MTV a year or so later. My babysitter.
The back beat is what made Rock & Roll. Brad & Lex, a couple somewhere, Rock & Rolled last night. Get it.
Sad thing about Huey is he’s got ear problems now and unable to continue in music.
Saw him in Lake Tahoe several years back. Great guy.
You want Rock n’ Roll? April wine, “I Like to Rock”. Crank it up.
I always say the 50s music is rock and roll today its rock or hard rock...
Great song. I've been a fan of his since 1981.
Huey Lewis is one of the artists in the "USA For Africa" video that I don't think you recognized. Now you know. lol Next time you watch that, you'll know who he is. Keep up the good work.
For the record, this is cheesy 80's pop and very very far away from "rock". The only good Huey Lewis song in my opinion is the great "Jacob's Ladder" (the live version) written by Bruce Hornsby
🙂 I have only been following your videos for about 3 days now and I get an absolute bang out of watching you two react to the music that I literally grew up with = It demonstrates just how timeless this music IS !! ** The very first concert my kids went to in around 1990 was to a Huey Lewis & the News concert at the Minnesota fair grounds that I took them to !!🙂🙂🙃😎😎+ Hughie and the News had several huge hits and 2 of my favorites are: "Workin' For a Livin'" & "Couple Days Off" = I am positive that those 2 songs will light little Lex's Fire big time 🙂🙂👍👍👍👍
