As always this is an excellent channel. I've never wondered how they moved the cast from part of any film to another, but for this iconic movie, it makes sense. The work inside that place is amazing. New vs rustic inside the same bldg.
This is literally my best channel on UA-cam ...every place you visit touches my heart ❤️ and it reminds me of my childhood .. this is literally my dream what you do .... big big fan of your videos ... sending respect from Belfast ... Ireland 🇮🇪 🍀
Jesus! I got tears in my eyes. The building is stunning outside but the inside is 👀 …they don’t make places like this anymore, to think this was almost gone and left to time sickens me.
Thank you for this! Not many people know that Billy Barty and Pat McCormick were best friends and under the rainbow was just a start but they could be seen together almost every night at Los Alamitos race track Billy was an owner of standardbreds right around the same time Annette Funicello married Glen Holt. What a beautiful hotel thank you for showcasing it!
Culver City is where people went to film movies in the golden era? I always thought it was Burbank because in most old 60s and 70s tv show, the anouncer always said "Filmed in beautiful downtown Burbank".
This is why I love this channel and what you guys do. Being a pretty big fan of The Wizard of Oz my whole life, I still didn't know anything about what you showed in this video. Keep up the great work both of you! Happy 5th, cheers to you both!
All I can say is, "WoW!" I love historical places like this. You can feel the history. I got a great vibe from the hotel, but it also made me sad, or a feeling of longing to go back in time and be there with those who passed. I really appreciate the time and love you put into this little gem. Thank you so much.
Great video! They say "if walls could talk...". Well, they most certainly did to you that day. I know a video in general wouldn't completely do it justice to walk through and explore, but you guys captured it and did a great job! Thanks for sharing!
I am surprised you never mentioned the John Wayne connection to this building. He supposidly won it in a poker game from Charlie Chaplin for 1 dollar and then later donated it to the YMCA. From what I have learned the "tunnel" under the hotel was really used for actors and actresses to cross the busy street to get to Culver Studios. The tunnel was filled in back in the 1970s. So not only did the munchkins use the tunnel but many other famous people would have.
What a great video about Wizard of Oz and the munchkins. I heard and read that the munchkins were not trouble makers at all. Even Judy Garland said it was made up to amuse fans. Loved seeing the place they would go and that the hotel was redun for future generations to enjoy like you too. Happy Anniversary.
As a child I was obsessed with the living breathing soul of New York City, as an adult this has shifted somewhat to the history and mystique of Los Angeles/ Hollywood, its darker reality vs the glamorous veneer of these movie stars lives during the Golden age of Hollywood. The Hotels, the Clubs, Bars, House parties in the Hills scattered all throughout Los Angeles. Its a living history & truly fascinating.
So bummed we didn't actually get to see the tunnel, but what a building! Especially the room you said reminded you of The Crow, and the chandeliers and woodwork. I do hope you get to do your vow renewal there.
At 12:46 you were looking down at Jessica and it was a really great shot with her looking up at you, such a cute couple and that comes from a guy. I would love to see this hotel myself ! it was absolutely beautiful inside, you just don't get to see these places every day. I love that old architecture you got some breathtaking shots of the place!! Thank You !!!!
"Putting Pants on Phillip" that you mention (and you never heard of) is an early pairing of Laurel and Hardy (Stan plays Phillip, newly arrived from Scotland and wearing a kilt). It's a very funny movie that you can find online I'm sure, and see the hotel "back in the day."
Love this little Culver City jaunt.... and the history of the place is great!... I really like the Wizard of Oz window display with the dolls-- so Fine... Thanks, for taking us along, Grimms.... and YES, renew your vows at this place.... :^)""""
Wow I cant believe I'm just now seeing this. Watched y'all live tonight I never seen that movie until tonight was actually one of George Clooneys best movies
Just discovered your channel. The algorithm presented me with this video. I was VERY impressed. Your photography is art. Very high production value and excellent editing. The music was perfectly selected. Your commentary was bright and to the point. Wow! Thanks for being there! PS The lounge you went into shortly before the 11:30 point on the video is where Mr. Culver haunts.thanks for passing along the "feel" of every place you film.
This hotel is awesome. Me and my girlfriend use to pretend the hotel was haunted. There's a good theater next to it that closed during covid. I think they're remodeling the theater. The lion at the water is because MGM studios use to be down the street. Now its Sony studio.
Great video on Wizard of Oz I was lucky enough to meet one of the “munchkins” Jerry Maren years back and hung out with him for a afternoon on a video I made. He was so nice
Such great history on the building. And having the cast be there in the 30's filming the great movie of all time. The munchkins were a big part of the movie. Thanks for making this video. It was a treasure. 🎃❤️

I watched a vid interviewing some of the surviving Munchkin actors and two of them, an adult woman and a 16 year old girl were moved from the hotel to a separate location for the duration of the shoot due to an aggressive little person who entered their room with a knife in hand. I think he was the one that grabbed the woman in the commissary and pulled her by her hair across the floor.
Thanks for the video. Read and heard interviews many years ago about all the partying the munchkins did, the tunnel was open and working to keep the cast secret from the public. Many of the classic films were shot in Culver City on backlots, especially Hal Roach 1 and 2 reelers.
Absolutely love your videos! Old Hollywood, the history, can't get enough! Keep the videos coming! Have you ever considered doing a video on the 1932 movie "Freaks?" A history lesson from your perspective on that movie would be fascinating. Keep up the great work you two, you're awesome!
Wow!! This was so cool 😎 I completely agree, that hotel was bewitching! I thought I knew all the Oz trivia but somehow this little gem escaped me (or I’m old and I forgot 🤣). Thanks for another interesting video. Hope you had a lovely anniversary!💚
This was great. Really interesting. I literally just got gifted a wizard of oz colouring book for Christmas so this was right up my street. Sending u both love from the UK. x
I grew up in Point Loma in San Diego. In the mid-1970's, when I was still in high school, some friends showed me a small neighborhood on the Northwest side of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla. All of the houses in the neighborhood were normal-sized, but the doors and gates on maybe a dozen houses were of a size that only a child or a midget could pass through them without having to stoop over. The urban legend had it that a number of the actors and actresses who played roles in the Wizard of Oz had built houses in this neighborhood. I don't know if it's true, but I can say I saw the houses with my own eyes. They were all older houses that appeared to date from the same time period.

Hi Michael & Jessie, just subscribed to your channel. I loved the showing of the Culver Hotel. It's absolutely gorgeous and it would be perfect place for your vow renewal. You're such a cute couple. Have a healthy and happy New Year 2022.
Fantastic tour and history lesson. Your camera work is always slow and smooth which I appreciate so you can take in the sights without getting motion sick. I highly recommend you look into getting a circular polarizer for your DSLR lens -- it will help eliminate reflections when filming items behind glass/windows and it makes the clouds and sky pop even more as an everyday filter.
The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie as a child yet it scared me at the same time. I was Dorothy in a play when I was in the fifth grade. Good scary times!
I grew up in Kansas, so the tornado terrified me! Then I read how they did the twister FX: One guy held a hairdryer with a nylon stocking rubberbanded to the nozzle while another guy twisted the bottom of the stocking. Whoa, it sure worked! And Glinda's globe was a float from a toilet tank.

I had no idea of the tunnels where all the "munchkins" traveled to and fro the studio to make the "Wizard of Oz"...surprising. That hotel is breathtaking inside! WOW! Thanx for the very cool history on my favorite childhood movie! Hi Jessica!! Hope you are both doing well. Stay safe! Happy Halloween! Peace.
@@staubach1979rt l Would like to see your proof evidence and proof it doesn’t exist! Could there be possibility that at one time the tunnels actually existed but studio and hotel sealed it up for safety and liability reasons also issues for everybody and maybe they removed parts of tunnel to prevent in case someone decide to break it open again to explore?
@@buddyr3 You want proof of something that never existed? It doesn't work that way. The claimant is the one who has to show proof of their claim. In any case, the tunnel myth has been around for decades with not one person having been able to verify its existence. Not one. MGM/Sony is blocks away from the hotel. The only tunnel that ever existed is a pedestrian tunnel that ran under Washington Bl. from Van Buren Pl. to the sidewalk NEXT to the Culver Hotel. Trust me, I've lived here for over 55 years. There is no Culver Hotel tunnel connected to anything. I think the author of this video knows that.
The tunnel would have been just under .5 mile long to reach from the hotel to the soundstage. My guess is that if there is (was) a tunnel, it was probably used during prohibition for various purposes. Still, it's a cool legend.
Hey guys, I love your channel and you guys so much as well. OK, that’s it. The next time I have family visit from the East Cost, and ask for a tour, I’m calling you guys. I love the “out of the box” places you go to with the interesting facts you give. 👍🏻.
Awesome video! I’ve heard about the antics of the munchkins at the hotel. The genuine love that you both have for one another is beautiful, happy anniversary to you both. Many more years of happiness together.
As soon as you mentioned Culver City I immediately thought of Laurel and Hardy the geniuses of comedy. They filmed many films in and around that area, many of the buildings still exist. Why not do a couple of videos on these masters of comedy and maybe visit their graves too 👍🏼
You mentioned vow renewal and I know we do not know each other whatsoever but I do love you guys and your channel…I am a ordained minister, a photographer, a DJ, makeup artist, and wedding planner it would be a dream to be apart of your renewal. This is definitely in the top 5 videos of yours that I love. That velvet lounge looked so divine. Great job you two! Looks like you guys really enjoyed making this video.
It's a shame Jerry went before he could shed light on what was actually going on at the Culver Hotel. I'm positive there were still plenty of stories about Oz to learn that sadly seem to be lost to time now because of the actors passing.
My wife and I knew Jerry and his wife Elizabeth. He told us that there was a lot of craziness with some of the munchkins like drinking and partying. He mentioned that many had never seen other small people like themselves until they filmed the movie so many of them bonded over that course of time. I'm sure not all of them were drinking and etc though. During our first putting with them he shared a few stories: ua-cam.com/video/S_nCsxTOd4k/v-deo.html
This is why I moved here in 1981, you can spend multiple lives here and not see all there is to see and experience. I would go to Hollywood Park racetrack ( now So-Fi Stadium ) and see Jerry Maren , the middle munchkin of the Lollipop guild regularly there with his wife. Thanks , looking forward to your 2022 vids.
Wow that is amazing ! Feel like you should use that song you put in the video at your ceremony. Wish they could make it safe so you can go through the tunnel !!
This is the best thing going on you tube and most of entertainment in general!

Congratulations to you both for still being together. Love you guys and your channel. Thank you for this video
I've been wanting to watch Under the Rainbow again!

You and Baby Ghoul do an excellent job of story telling and documenting things!
Really cool to see the basement storage area where they keep all the chairs. You should've included the janitor closet.
Gorgeous building thanks for sharing. The way Jessica looks at Micheal too, their love shines ❤❤

Wow that is amazing ! Feel like you should use that song you put in the video at your ceremony. Wish they could make it safe so you can go through the tunnel !!
