When I was a kid, it would have been impossible to come out with a replica even close to the arcade game in appearance. Like I commented on the Galaga video, the replicas that came out when the arcade games were new just had fixed LED's and crude sound, because only in the 21st Century you could have hi-res graphics and accurate sound in a tiny replica arcade game.
Can you imagine that! I remember being the small kid behind everyone at the 80s arcades! This would have been crazy to walk around in the palm of your hand!
My wife just got me the Ms. Pac-Man mini arcade, the second one you've played. I'm very grateful for the gift, but you're right, there's nothing like the original arcade graphics and sound effects.
Also the Basic Fun Ms. Pacman messed up the fruit order. Any Ms. Pacman fan worth their power pellets will know that the strawberry comes after the cherry, NOT the apple!
I only play Ms. Pac-Man on my PS4. Honestly, I’ve found that that version is the best, with an exception to the original that was released to arcades almost forty years ago.
I think that My Arcade should do something similar to Basic Fun, Make some "Remakes" of its Micro Players that use the Original ROMs of its Games. In the case of Basic Fun, Use Custom ROMs, but My Arcade should use the Original Arcade ROMs
I had said the Arcade Classics Ms. Pacman was hard to play, but a few minutes ago I made it to the "Chase Scene" after the fifth level! The Chase scene looks exactly like the real arcade game. Also the fruit on the 6th level is the pear and the game play just like the real arcade game is easier than the 4th and 5th levels. The Arcade Classics is very addicting. I played it for hours and not signs of weardown yet. The game is still hard to play.... Happy night!
I find it fascinating that in the 21st Century, you can have a handheld game that is a true replica that looks like an arcade cabinet and has high-resolution graphics. I played a handheld pac-man game at a friend's house in 1982, and back then the maze was etched into the screen, and the pac-man, dots, and ghosts, were just LED's. There is even a Dragon's Lair replica, which could never be done in the 80s because you couldn't store full-motion video on tiny solid state memory chips and have a computer display it directly. You could only do it with a big laser disc player and huge circuit board with a box-shaped monitor, and that could only fit in a full-sized arcade cabinet.
Very interesting! Glad my family have the 1up Arcade version instead of those two. One of my sisters bought the 3/4 scale arcade cabinet, and it plays almost, if not completely, like a straight forward copy of the original arcade game. Of course, the 1up arcade cabinet is expensive though, yet worth it.
Four years late with a comment Jon but bearing in mind that we now have My Arcade Micro Players with arcade(ish) roms and the correct TATE screen orientation, I still picked up a 2019 Ms Pacman over the 2023 one simply because it looks better on the shelf :-) To be honest, I only powered it up to make sure it works and that's probably about as much of it as I play. Keep up the awesome work!
I always think of Ms. Pac Man as being a boomer classic! I know tons of people in their 60s who loved it when it came out. Such an awesome game either way :)
I have the My Arcade version it's ok but I do like to play the Arcade machine in the speed or Hyper mode it's much funner to play then the mini ones. Nice video
It might be more expensive ($129.99 via Geek Store,) but compared to these two, the Numskull Quarter Arcade Ms. Pac-Man is much better. Cabinet is all wood, control feels quite good even for a mini cabinet, it is the legit arcade ROM, and the cabinet is just a lot nicer to look at.
I really like the look of the Numskull units, but I just haven't been able to justify the price. As single-game machines (though vastly superior to these), they're not exactly collectibles. Well, I guess they could be if you were wealthy enough! 😉
Get this Jon, just a few mins ago I played the My Arcade version and get to the stage that repeats the bananas. Unlike the Arcade version which repeats the Stork Intermission scene after completing a few levels of Bananas, the My Arcade/NES version repeats the Chase scene instead. I did this with only 1 life left. I am not sure if the Chase is the sole repeater or if the 1st or 3rd intermissions repeat as well.
@@GenXGrownUp yes sir! The game (My Arcade) now seems easier than before. However I have tried a few times to get to the intermission after the stork intermission, but no luck. After the stork intermission the ghosts get faster and the maze design is way harder to maneuver through.
To explain, the My Arcade release of Ms. Pac Man uses a custom ROM for the Japanese Famicom port of Ms. Pac Man officially released by Namco. The NES version released by Tengen follows the arcade original more closely.
I got the 5-in-1 Ms. Pac-Man Countercade from Arcade1Up. All of the new models 2021 and past are programmed with the Fast Hack, so it’s def worth it if you can’t afford a full size cab.
I agree with you Id want to smash the My Arcade version to pieces....the sound in the Pacman series is extremely important. The other Id play just once due to the crappy control. Control and sound tie it all together.

I picked up a bunch of the tiny brand ones that are about 4 inches high (a smurf is the right size to play ii) and they were $9.99 each at Walmart, now going $20 to $25... but at least those are the real roms yet nearly unplayble due to size.. I don't like the other brand that is bigger but is using their own software... now the replicades are amazing but too pricey

I saw the Ms.Pac Man by My Arcade at a drug store near me and I'm glad I did not buy it. I will give My Arcade this though: they do a great job with the look of the mini arcades. They're great for display but from what I've seen for most of these, they don't really play that well. Probably due to the weird d-pads.
I'm right there with you. These are cool to collect and display, but not the ideal way to play the classic games. My Arcade Space Invaders may be the exception to the rule.

@@GenXGrownUp the tengen rom was a bad port plus it was an unofficial port which resulted in a legal battle. The actual rom for the nes is somewhat of a mystery because while the rom is availible why didn't they port it to the my arcade system is my question.
My Arcade was definitely a modified NES Namco ROM. 100% guaranteed. That being said, they could have easily changed the color of the first level maze. The cheap "glob top" one chip NES they use in all these things is famous for missing sounds or not playing sounds properly.

I have the basic fun version, and for some reason, I don't have the same control problems you do, maybe my brain adjusted or maybe I just got "lucky", either way, I do prefer the basic fun version by far, it may be small but at least it is *Slightly more accurate than my arcade, who, IMHO, didn't really try to make it like the original.

Are the Arcade Classics made by Midway or Basic Fun? I've found both credited for it, but I see a different look on the Basic Fun desk cabinets on Amazon.
Arcade Classics are definitely manufactured and distributed by Basic Fun. When you see an Amazon listing them with "Midway" the title, that's an SEO hack to get the product to show up on a variety of different search terms.
I have alot of basic fun minis the joysticks just takes a little bit to get used to but imo the basic fun minis are better, and the ms. Pacman is very good and very playable, put some time in and get used to the joysticks
Fun fact, there are two versions of the NES port of Ms. Pac-Man: one is released by Tengen in 1990 and followed the arcade version very closely. The version released by Namco in 1993 is almost the same, but with multi-colored mazes. The version that you're reviewing is the NES port by Namco released in 1993. Also, the Tengen version released in 1990 should be a MUCH better fit.
The port used in the My Arcade version of Ms. Pacman looks very close to the early 2,000's Plug and Plays by Jakks Pacific. I used to own one that came with Mappy.
Thank you! Saw the My Arcade version in the store. It looked really cool so I considered buying it. Glad I didn't. Seeing how it actually plays, holy shit, they look like trash. Actually both games look pretty good. Sure it can't compare to the arcade. But common it's 25.00-40.00. You can take it in a gym bag and toss it around.
What you were playing on the my arcade WAS the nes port. Well, the second one. That was an official port. Tengen made another port that had the speed, better graphics, but had some screen scrolling. The official one is garbage.
It's a shame that the Basic Fun version of the game plays terribly, because I prefer the actual external design better. It looks a exactly like this Ms Pacman cabinet at this pizza/subs place we all hung around when I was 10. :-)
Here's the break down: My arcade's has better design..the control doesn't appear to be cramped and cheap. However, it uses nes rom which I think it's inferior to the arcade's classic.
See ur problem is your comparing this to the arcade versions instead of just enjoying this for what it is. I have both and the arcade classics is slow but controls is responsive on mine but once you get to level 2 it’s faster. My arcade is lot better

I think the software Roms used for the My Arcade games were also used in the Plug and Plays by Jakks Pacific from 2004.
Sure. The My Arcade ROMs are just NES, so I'm sure they're used lots of places via NOA (NES-On-a-Chip).

There are 2 NES versions of Ms. Pac Man, one is from Namco and one is from Tengen just like the Genesis and Snes version

The joystick should be in the middle of the control panel. Although I'm right handed, I always play joystick only games with my right hand.

Which ones can be easily modded to unlock other factory games hidden on the motherboard? Thats what I would like to see compared.

My biggest problem with the My Arcade unit (don’t have the Arcade Classics) is that the high score doesn’t save when you turn it off.

I just bought a #11 that is in a yellow box not blue like the one you have. It works perfectly. See if you can get that in your collection.

Odd isn't it? My Arcade: Beautiful Cabinet, Ugly Rom Port; Arcade Classics: Ugly Cabinet, Beautiful nearly dead on Arcade Rom Port.
I have alot of basic fun minis the joysticks just takes a little bit to get used to but imo the basic fun minis are better, and the ms. Pacman is very good and very playable, put some time in and get used to the joysticks
Fun fact, there are two versions of the NES port of Ms. Pac-Man: one is released by Tengen in 1990 and followed the arcade version very closely. The version released by Namco in 1993 is almost the same, but with multi-colored mazes. The version that you're reviewing is the NES port by Namco released in 1993.
Also, the Tengen version released in 1990 should be a MUCH better fit.

The port used in the My Arcade version of Ms. Pacman looks very close to the early 2,000's Plug and Plays by Jakks Pacific. I used to own one that came with Mappy.

Ms. Pacman is something that should be fairly easy to emulate by todays standards. No excuse for this terrible execution. Thanks for the video.

Actually both games look pretty good. Sure it can't compare to the arcade. But common it's 25.00-40.00. You can take it in a gym bag and toss it around.

What you were playing on the my arcade WAS the nes port. Well, the second one. That was an official port. Tengen made another port that had the speed, better graphics, but had some screen scrolling. The official one is garbage.

It's a shame that the Basic Fun version of the game plays terribly, because I prefer the actual external design better. It looks a exactly like this Ms Pacman cabinet at this pizza/subs place we all hung around when I was 10. :-)

Here's the break down: My arcade's has better design..the control doesn't appear to be cramped and cheap. However, it uses nes rom which I think it's inferior to the arcade's classic.
I've never played ms. pacman in my life and it's a shame that they ruined the game.
You should play. It's superior to the original in almost every way.
See ur problem is your comparing this to the arcade versions instead of just enjoying this for what it is. I have both and the arcade classics is slow but controls is responsive on mine but once you get to level 2 it’s faster. My arcade is lot better

Hip a crime you said that the basic fun virgin of Pac-Man was better but that one has most of the same flows sound slow and it’s near impossible to get all 4 goats so it’s fine for Pac-Man to have flaws that make the Pac-Man virsson 10ximes better but when myalgia evade use a good rom of Pac-Man its bad
The bezel of the My Arcade looks awesome but the gameplay rots. Its Arcade Classics for the win.

Yea both versions have a bad MS PACMAN the basic fun one looks better graphic wise, but play wise is horrible! The My Arcade one is more playable but graphic wise looks cheesy. Which one would I rather have for just SHOW on my showcase THE MY ARCADE!
