I noticed you drilling screws in the troughs (the low spots) rather than the crests (the high spots) in the corrugated roofing. From what I've read and other videos I've watched, it's better to put the screws in the crests, being careful not to dimple the roofing. That should help minimize the possibility of leaks. Just thought this might be helpful to other viewers.

I agree and would add that you need "wiggle molding" to support screw along each nail strip. Screw one panel at a time so you can reach without crawling on panels.

You are right about your animals consuming anything made in china. It sounds awful but there have been so many cases in the UK of a well know company selling dog treats made in china and the dogs dying. I personally wouldn't take a chance with anything consumable because in the end you consume it too.

I see a lot of suggestions for "New Eggland". There is a company that supplies eggs called "Eggland". Located in Malvern, PA and are a major supplier. Don't think Al and Gina want to infringe on any trademark or copy-right issues. Just a note of consideration. And..I think they have a line called New Eggland's Best. I am sure Al, as a growing and popular UA-camr, is already aware of this. All the best.

It looks like you measured the coop itself as 8ft, but did you include the roof itself in that measurement, it looks like it is more than 9ft combined. You don't want to have to take everything apart! Also name the coop Chickago, since it is going to be a chick brooder as well and still fits with the US city themes.

    Her pronunciation is really good!
there's a tendency to go with a long "ow" sound for the O. Try shortening it keeping it as brief as possible
for UNO instead of it sounding more like "ooo knoW" try "ooo_No!"
for Quatro the same thing instead of "Ku-ah trouW" try "Ku Ah Troh"

My girls liked black soldier fly larvae when I first bought them, but then started leaving about half uneaten (I put out about 1/2 cup each morning for four chickens). I am using another brand (Bugs for Birds), which is less expensive, but still USA-raised. I'll try Grubblies to see if the brand makes a difference. The chicken glaze looks really tasty!

Nice to see a couple working so well together to build things! My only comments - the top of the walls should be double plated and for a lean-to style the roof joists should have birds' mouth cuts. Without the birds' mouth cuts the weight of the roof (and everything on the roof) is not directed downwards on the wall, but instead is pushing your walls away from each other.

The coop is awesome, I'm like Gina though and hope it can come out of the workshop. lol No, don't give your animals any food related items from China. Drilling holes in wood with an impact can be very hard on the impact. You should use a regular drill. For dewalt i would recommend the DCD996, its very versatile and capable for drilling through any type of material where as the lesser or "homeowner" models are just not that powerful. Hope this helps!

Al, I spend good money to get a green lawn. In the past three years, I've had to use Grub-X to kill off the grubs that burrow holes into the lawn. It's either Grub-X or having moles that eat grubs. Grub-X kills the grubs and with no grubs, no moles.
The weight savings of using plastic roofing material are real, however plastic roofing doesn't have good UV light resistance. The plastic panels become brittle as the plasticizers leech out and the panels start cracking. Plastic is also brittle in cold temperatures. Combine the cold and wind, and you might have the roof blown off the coop with a strong winter storm.
I don't want to go off on a Chinese conspiracy rant, but they don't respect human life. They're still struggling with what parts of capitalism they want. The owners of the companies want to manufacture a good product, but the pay structure rewards managers for quantity, not quality. The pet food deaths 8-10 years ago were attributed to some unscrupulous persons adding melamine to wheat and rice gluten to artificially raise the protein reporting showing higher protein values.

Try adding grated carrots in with their grain for yolk colour.

Yes, and /or grow some wheat grass in a window box and feed them and the dogs and cat. They will love it. and alfalfa hay would help that, too.

That's just color feeding but doesnt do much for added nutrition..

I made the chicken tonight. The family loved it. Going to have to remember this one. I bet it would be great on pork chops.

I hope, when pulling the coup out of the workshop, the back won’t tilt up and hit the garage door. Not sure how much drop the outside ground is with the workshop floor. Will be fun to see how much clearance there will be. Looking at the video it will be tight. 😀

Good to know about the plastic roofing, especially for women builders. I do believe the chickens and ducks really like the new snack.

Speaking of China the US pulled the FDA that inspects medicines and foods from China last week, so you are on your own when it comes to those two sources from China. The cargo ships take one month from there to here so, about April the supplies will be decreasing, I am stocking up on pet food now, as most pet foods are made in China

That's not structural wood its at best for internal studding - Personally, I'd use treated sawn air-dried wood from a somewhere like the suppliers for the forestry commission - it's treated in a vacuum chamber and when you cut it you can see it's treated right through not like some from DIY stores - do it right it will outlive you - sadly that wood you are using you will be showing distress within the decade

Another great video, Question for you. Where do you buy those long screws? I live in Puerto Rico and I stopped by the local Home Depot and couldn't find them.I didn't asked. I need a length of 8 inches to fix a wobb;y table that my sister is attached to. Any help would help, thanks

Are you sure Caleb and Zeke are goats? They look like refugees from a rock and roll tour from the 1970s. I know they're teenagers but that's no excuse. Our girls love those crunchy worm treats. You named the ducks. Our ducks died. I can't take the heartache. I miss CWC. and our ducks.

Where did you get your plastic roofing from? I was trying to tell what the manufacturer was from the label but went too fast past it. Thanks!

Have you asked your vet to scan the goats to check on whether they are pregnant? Might give you a heads-up on how many babies to expect and who from. After all, there's only a couple of months to prepare. Just in case anyone asks: Grubblies are delicious. :D

I don’t like to criticise, But perhaps rethink your screw positioning so that your screws go solidly into the centre of the timber you are fixing to (rafters).
I see that you are following the totally weird American habit of putting the fixings in the valleys of your corrugated roofing thereby ensuring that if there is even a miniscule chance of any water getting in, it will. Oh well you lot pioneered “Designed Obsolescence” carry on .....

  • @gary1887

thought you should screw in the top of the corrugated roof so there be no leaks , love to hear how it turns out but it does look great wish I could build like that also I really hope that get out of there look way close

I am been lead to believe that ducks would normally eat their food under water as they have a filtering system build into their beak due to the fact that they have no intestines compared to a chook and for that reason duck eggs should only be used in cakes where the process calls for a high temperature and a duration of at least 8 minutes to kill off any possible contaminants.....just saying....I really like the episodes and great progress you and your family are making...Cheers from Australia...I also hope the number plates are retained with the new coop in memory of CWC...
