    How about using an old sheet of linoleum (plastic kitchen flooring) to cover the floor in the chicken building you just built. It would make the floor a whole lot easier to clean when you have to shovel it out and will keep your flooring in better shape longer. I saw it done by another modern homesteader and thoughtit was a good idea.

    Ben rubbing a chicken guard for 7 months now. Works great on lux setting. Early on I had a couple chickens stuck outside but they got used to being in before dark now. They say there bats ate good for a year, but batteries are cheap, chickens too but the time to get them productive is priceless, might change them like your smoke detector.

    The light sensor for my PulletShut door is inside the barn and still opens/closes the door fine, yours should be fine inside. When it was outside operation was well before it was light in the coop (converted stall 8' from the wall with the windows) in the morning and after it was too dark to see outside at night.

    1. Don't add wood ashes to your garden soil. Food crops require acidic soil, and wood ash is extremely alkaline. Alkali is why they make bar soap with wood ash.
    2. Chickens are not herbivores. They require meat protein. That's why your egg production drops so drastically in winter without grublies. It's also why yard eggs are better and more plentiful.

    Al I have a CONTENT IDEA.... could you please do a time lapse of the snow falling off your workshop roof? When Glenn and I drive around Hampshire we think it’s amazing the way snow slips off a metal roof. Sometimes we are in awe at how far it sticks over the edge without falling, but we rarely get to experience “THE FALL”...... I think it would be super cool to see that happen. Thanks...

    Al - your Barista is great! Quick question - why place the Chicken Guard in the Door instead of the wall like your other coup? Seems simpler to use the "man door" if the "chicken door" and ramp were attached to the fixed door, but I'll bet there's a reason I haven't thought of (like the brilliant idea of putting the Chicken Guard inside to stay out of weather ... Really enjoy your journey ... best to you and your family!

  • @emwagner
    @emwagner 2 роки тому

    You should put a little round over (to remove the sharp edges) on the treads of the ramp. Chickens could get bumble foot from sharp edges which would never heal. Wouldn't heal because chickens are always on their feet. Just a suggestion.

    You should check inside your coop everyday. Chickens don't always lay their eggs in the next boxes. Also one could be sick or dead in there. I enjoy watching your videos. We have been hobby farmers for 30 years. Horses, cattle, sheep, chickens and one goat.

    How many trees do you have tapped for syrup. I took a tour of a sap rendering and they had hundreds of trees tapped. It was pretty impressive if I remember it 45 years later.

    Love the new coop! I've been under the weather for a couple of days. Have you named her yet?When do the meat birds come in? 💓Sending my love to my favorite family in New England!
