The problem with most modern economic simulators is they're cardboard. Mostly, because the devs go cheap and don't invent a new functioning economic system. So the game becomes "press x to win". Kids won't play a serious simulator so it needs to lick their tiny asses from the start, giving them free everything and letting build empires after 5 minutes of playing. And devs won't make different difficulties for different kinds of audience. They just change 1 thing. Like "profit +500% is easy, profit +0% is normal, profit -33% is hard". Yes, I know it's difficult to tune. Well that's what making NEW games is. Difficult. Make a living world where your skills matter, not just your presence. Some choices. Some risks. Not a tunnel from 0 gold to 10 billion no matter what you do. Who would play tennis if anything you do you'd still win? Who would play chess if you couldn't lose, only pick a different pattern? Who'd play soccer if you could press a button and score a goal? Without years of training, learning tactics, tricks, control etc. I ask myself: what am I doing in this game? What's my role? What would change if I do poorly? Try and win NFS ProStreet casually. You can't. One tiny mistake and your car is wrecked. Because it takes skill. And it doesn't just throw you into the ocean sink-or-swim. It allows you to grow. From forgiving races to absolutely insane. And that's why Railroad Tycoon 2 is loved. It's also about subtle management. It doesn't just give you everything for being present. No one said "chess is too hard, kids would be upset, they'd invest 30 min into playing and still lose... They'd not buy it" And most of these games just go through a check-list. Beautiful? Check. Money? Check. Building? Check. That's like I'm thrown ingredients in my face. Here's your flour, you said you wanted more! Here's your sugar. Here, eggs! Apples! Butter! Enjoy! You wanted that. No, I wanted an apple pie. And a good one, not just randomly mixed and put into oven for a random amount of time. That's not how an apple pie is made. And this is not how games are made. But... people would still buy it so nobody cares. And I have to wait for decades to see one good game in a pile of junk. Beautiful RTX junk.
Thank you this is great feedback, I am developing an economy simulation game, and I was thinking the same as you, most economy simulation games play by themselves, you buy a business or 2 and that's it you let it run a few hours to come back rich even in the most difficult settings. My game is inspired by rail road tycoon, but without the trains, with a similar economy interaction and more products, and AI that is actually trying to take you out of business by trying to outsmart you, while you build your supply chain etc.
@@RolopIsHere Last thing I tried was Capitalism Lab. Was so promising, seemed so deep... I can't say I was fooled but I was kinda disappointed. After all the tutorials and details of realistic economy, it's still just "plop a shop and money will flow". So I can tell it's not about the complexity, a good game can be simple, like Tetris. There are conditions, there is a problem and there is a way to solve it. Details are like spices, they may add to a dish but not form it without the base. I like games. Thank you for this video. Such a good list. You have successfully made my backlog of games I want to play even longer
Why are you showing games from the year 1925 though? show us up-to-date games, thats what we want.
who are you to decide what the masses want
Not "We" that's what you want bro. Let the man choose what he wants to show, it's his choice.
None of the games listed here are that old. Maybe you are just a lil bit stupid and can't tell the difference between and old game and an indie game.
