  • This walnut jewelry box was inspired by a box made by James Krenov. It is rift sawn walnut, and the liner and the sliding box on the inside was made from ash. The finish is boiled linseed oil and a top coat of dark wax.

      40 years a cabinet maker and just never used the shooting board all that much. Though to be fair, not much call when building kitchen cabinets.

    Talent first, skill second, dream shop third. There were a couple of tools in this video I've never seen before. But I believe Guy could turn out a good product with a cheap toolbox saw and a pack of sandpaper.
    And what I've learned about myself is that I like making jigs and designing and building my own machine tools more than I like the actual woodworking.
    There's a place for everyone under the sun.

      Did i see it correct? Did you use the router table for the 45% angles on the corners? I have need for very accurate mitres on 12 mm thick walnut stock, i guess this relies on your router being accurately at 90 degrees to the table surface.

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  7 років тому +1

      Yes, I used a 45 degree miter bit. It only will work on stock that is 7/16" thick however. I think they make some that have a larger cutting surface though.

    Ok, so I learned something extremely valuable to me here. . I've seen this trick of jointing a wide board and making that step. However, every time i've seen it they have built a sled that had to be run through the planer with the board. Usually when i'm doing this I am dealing with really long boards and I have no board long enough to act as the reference surface. This is the first time I've seen someone have the reference surface fixed. Thank you for showing this!

      No talking maybe good for some, but what is the point of listening to a bunch of machine noise with no explanation of why and what you are doing. Sure we see the operations and understand what they are. You might as well sleep up the video 25 times realtime. The video would impart the same value.
      Guy you have made some very good instructional videos, demonstrating techniques and how to use various tools.
      In my opinion this is not the path to go down, share your talents, but this style of videos does not do that.

    How thick is the top? A 3/4 in thick frame and panel seems like it would look way too thick but working with 1/2 in material would only leave 1/8 in of material for the mortise walls (using 1/4 in tenons). Really enjoyed the video.

    Outstanding workmanship, beautiful box.. but how do people make a profit making and selling these items?? This is obviously quality but how many hours are invested in producing this fine piece and how much would it actually sell for if that were your intent? Please forgive my asking, I know this is not a video on how to sell what you make, it's just that I've always admired how folks like you can do this without going completely bankrupt for the love of woodworking. I have every tool I saw you use in this video, I've been a "garage woodshop guy" for close to 30 years and it's very expensive as a hobby.. how in the world do you do it? Thanks for a great video, I hope it's not offensive asking a question off topic..

    So I need a squeeze bottle for my shellac and I need more shellac and I need to make a 45* ramp for my shooting board. Thanks Guy

      HaHa. The 45 degree ramp is nice for box parts, and I'm really glad I have it now. The finish on this is BLO then wax over the top of it, no shellac flakes were harmed in the making of this video. And yes, I do also have a small squeeze bottle for my shellac :) You're welcome!
