One thing i loved about Ateez is that they’re allowed to express their own style of dancing. It becomes more evident when you go in deeper into their discography. iirc they initially went for the synchronised type of choreography but decided that they wanted to grow into their own style while having that Ateez flair in their choreography. I believe that this freedom of expression to be able to blend their own style while learning the choreography has allowed them to develop and grow. The biggest evidence of this is San. Fun fact: pre-debut san was considered the “worst” dancer amongst Ateez but he worked really hard to learn dancing + being able to develop and show his own style really made him into one of the best dancers imo.
Also i love that they’re always go 110% during their dance practice and put in 200% for their performances. Goes to show why they’re called one of the best performers in Kpop.
Fun fact again: at the 05:02 mark what they're doing is actually their signature group chant/greeting foot move, they do it backstage before every show and in other important moments, it appears in some of their other choreos too.
When xikers did the same move in KOONG I was so happy lol, just a tiny little moment that only atiny would really recognize. It felt like a very sweet little way to pay homage to their big brothers
For the choreography BBtrippin (a dance crew working closely with Ateez's company) is the main choreographer of all of ateez's songs. They have a UA-cam channel where they post the demo versions to most choreos they make if that's something you're interested in watching! Also, you noticed the "stiffness" or lack of torso movement when it came to the first chorus. I just wanted to point something out. A lot of groups don't perform with a handmic or without a loud backtrack so their chores don't have to be that much adjusted to facilitate live vocals. In the first chorus the member in front is Jongho the main vocalist. Jongho always performs with a hand microphone and almost always sings live (and his parts are really high for a male idol) so you can see that in most choreos his upper body will seem more stiff especially in the shoulders, this is basically him sacrificing the dance for the sound. Keeping your torso aligned with your head (not moving your shoulders and neck much) helps him produce a more stable sound. He and the members are aware of the necessity of it and they often mention that his role holds him back and when he doesn't have to sing he dances differently and is one of the best dancers on the team. As for the reason why they still do it even if they don't sing in dance practice I would guess that they have to practice it the way they need to do it on stage so they would keep that "singing" posture.
Thank you so so much for the insight regarding this track specifically! This was technically my "first" look at them performing their own discography, so MANY of the details you mentioned (hand mic for live performances, BBtrippin's involvement within ATEEZ's choreo, conversion of dance practice to stage, etc) I learned while going through the rest of their work! I've technically hit around 45 analysis of their work (including most of their b-sides and some of their live performances) and they are all on Patreon for the moment if you want to see how my feedback becomes more refined in the future towards this group! I have really appreciated your commentary so far and I'm looking forward to more in the future!
@@jess_holyfield hey, I can't afford patreaon right now but I'll patiently wait for the rest of your reactions! I know you probably already learnt most of what I say so I hope I am not coming off as someone trying to argue/correct you. I just like to provide some context mostly for people who are watching the video and might be new to ateez too so that they have a bit more information along with your commentary. And perhaps I'll manage to say something you don't already know :)
18:56 There is a running joke I see a lot in the dance practices where the members all look like they are going to different places after practice is over because often each member tends to wear completely different looks. Like one will have on a blazer and another a sleeveless shirt and beanie and yet another with flowy shirt. Now that I think about it, Seonghwa (in the print shirt here) tends to be more ‘flowy’ when he dances and he often wears oversized shirts and tight pants or streamlined outfits. Now I am going to have to go back and pay attention to clothes vs. how they dance. 28:02 Yes! That is San.
i believe ateez were already working on/had say my name prepared by the time they debuted with treasure, and the glide was an intentional spoiler (somebody please correct me if i'm wrong, but i could have sworn they mentioned it somewhere years ago). there are multiple ateez-isms within the treasure choreo, like hongjoong writing 'ateez' with his hand in the intro (if you ever watch any stage performances, please check out treasure + precious! sonically and lore-wise, these songs are connected, and ateez end the precious choreography the exact same way they start treasure. it's super cool), and in the bridge part where they came together and you couldn't figure out the texture, they're in their signature group pose/introduction where they normally shout '8 makes 1 team' while doing the foot thing.
Some of the things they were doing in this choreo was more “Ateez” stuff than “choreo” stuff. For example, at the beginning when Hongjoong is “controlling” them, he is also spelling out ATEEZ with his hand. And then after the line part where they group together and do that thing with their feet, they are doing their “8 makes 1 team” group chant they do before they go on stage and when they are in concerts. It’s nice that they added those things in for the fans even in their debut track.
That’s something that I really appreciate about doing the marathons, I’m able to get way more insight into groups like this because of the time difference between this and their future works! Thank you so much for sharing!
Of their debut tracks, Pirate King is my favorite, but Treasure will always hold a special place in my heart. Ateez came out of the gate really strong but of course they had room to grow too. But even when they werent perfect you could always feel their energy and, as you mention, they just bring something special to the table when they perform to their own music.
Love your ATEEZ reaction/analysis! I'm learning a lot of it. An idea: you may want to check live performances (full camera) to see differences on dance practices videos. They are so much better because of face expresions! I'm looking for ATEEZ DejaVu dance practice! :D
Deja vu is currently on Patreon if you don’t want to wait! And I have had the opportunity to watch some of their live performances and you are NOT WRONG!! So impressive!

Very fun! Completely agree that their discography showcases this beautifully over the years! I really enjoyed watching every dance practice!
