I'd say Ateez's eras could be divided by either their albums or their album series'. They have three main album series so far: Treasure, Fever, and The World. Those three series in themselves could be considered "eras" given the time period between each era. Treasure starts from their debut in October 2018 and ends January - February 2020. Fever starts July 2020 to around May 2022. The World starts July 2022 til now with their second full length album "The World Ep. Fin: Will". Their first full length album being "Treasure EP. Fin: All to Action" (funnily enough that you mention Wonderland in this video because Wonderland was on their first full length album, and a few aspects in Crazy Form are meant to, in some ways, mirror or link to Wonderland.) After your comments about how they used their backup dancers in the Wonderland dance practice, without spoiling too much, I'll say they utilize their backup dancers much better by the Fever era and they improve even more by the start of their The World era. They show a big jump in improvement between the Fever and The World eras despite the Fever era being their busiest with the members having various side projects, Mingi going on a hiatus, and the group competing on Kingdom. Personally, as a mere viewer with practically zero dance knowledge, The World era is definitely my favorite. It is mostly thanks to the overall sound on the albums and story they're telling. Even with little knowledge about their lore, the music videos in that era are beautifully cinematic, with Halazia being my absolute favorite. I'm most excited for your reactions to the Guerilla, Halazia (both from The World era) and Fireworks (I'm the One) (from the Fever era) dance practices.
Since for me, lore and theatrics are such a huge point of engagement with both Ateez and Dreamcatcher, it makes sense in my head about why Wonderland was what it was and Crazy Form is what it is. Wonderland is more militaristic and stiff, so much structure, and it's the first non-performancr only MV that takes place in the Halateez universe. It's like we got a glimpse of what this world was - conformity, uniformity, strict, where any form of individualism and creativity is banned. Crazy Form is the same universe, but with the members having been "woken up" and now actively fighting back by expressing creativity and individualism *and bringing others with them this time.* Not that your Wonderland points are invalid or anything - this is just my interpretation of the lore and lyrics and why it makes sense to me about the massive difference between the two. Wonderland is trying to break through defenses, Crazy Form is having blown through the gates and now there's explosives in the basement of the castle. Again, just my interpretation and an attempt 😅 to... not really justify the choices in Wonderland, but to bring my interpretation of some of the potential choices they had since Ateez (and Dreamcatcher) have points in the choreography that match the lyrics. The line right after "9024 kick that drum/my ego's in this show" they reference going to the moon, so the point upward is connected to that line. I think Wooyoung also had some Moon phases happening with his hand during his turn with the line. Also at the bridge right before the dance break when Jongho is singing "ambition in my veins" when San is coming out, he's running his hand down his arm, tracing his veins. Just little bits that I connected to moves from the lyrics. The ending poses probably looks cluttered because remember how I said Jongho just had surgery on his knee this summer? He was missing from the dancing in the MV, but he was cleared for dancing *just* before the comeback so they had to scramble to make a 7 person ending and turn into 8 - it looks like Seonghwa (center) moved to the left to bring Wooyoung (blue jeans) to the right so it's more 4 and 4 grouping instead of the 7 person framed center they originally had in the MV. The 3 spaced out on the right are in their original ending positions, as are the 2 talls on the left. 3 people have shuffled about and they're the 3 closest to the camera. I agree with you that they could have made that ending pose a little neater by having San move a bit more forward and towards center. Also it might be of interest for you to watch their video (it's 22ish minutes I can't remember the title) where it shows some of the behind the scenes stuff - including them working and tweaking the choreography and movements. There's eng subs too. Also you might notice kind of a... jump? between songs in the Fever series (Inception/Thanxx, Fireworks, Deja Vu/Eternal Sunshine, The Real) and you could wonder if you missed something - it's missing Kingdom, a survival type show where they did where they strung all their performances into their lore (it was at the time of Fireworks) and I think they experimented with some new things and working with other groups brought to you by Mnet. (Just... please for my fragile heart, do *not* react to Wolf from there. That's 3 different groups (Ateez, Stray Kids, and BTOB) all doing a dance performance and I don't know if I could take you going 🤨 to Peniel (who has a bad back and is in a group more known for vocals and ballads) who's 5 years older than the oldest members of the dancers in the other groups. I'm sure you'd have a lot of interesting points to look at with the structures and formation changes and ... sigh. I mean do what you want, it's your channel and your Patreon - just go into it knowing that BTOB is an older 3rd gen group, they have more on the injury list, and they're known for *vocals* not dance performances unlike Stray Kids and Ateez.) Okay before I go on any more tangents 😅 I appreciate you doing these videos, you point out some things that I never would have noticed, especially how people get framed for their moments.
Wow!! What a detailed synopsis of this comeback as well as other connections within their work! Thank you thank you for the insight!! I’m excited to take a look at more of the work between Wonderland and this!
@@jess_holyfield No problem! Pirate King to Crazy Form is *all* connected together into one massive story and rarely can things be taken in too much isolation because some choices, even in the choreography, are made for lore purposes even if they seem counter intuitive or dumb. Ateez is one of the few groups where you have to know where in the story you are, which universe you're in, and even sometimes the lyrics to know if there were certain constrictions from the lore that may have influenced some of the choreography choices that were made. lol seriously you managed to start reacting to the one group with hands down the *most complicated lore* I've ever seen and one of the 3 groups I can name off the top of my head that have lore even in the choreography.
Also Wonderland was at a point in time that they didn't always have the budget to have back up dancers with them. In some performances of Wonderland they didn't have any backup dancers. Budget for back up dancers allows for more options too. Can't wait to hear your analysis on more dance practices now that you can see where they are now. ATEEZ walking on and off is a staple, while their backup dancers do the basket runs. In their concerts, ATEEZ wave to their fans while they walk off.
They usually sing with the track during dance practices because they do their stages live and this helps keep their vocal and physical fitness. They talk about this in one of the behinds for their kingdom performance. In some MV (Guerrilla comes to mind you can hear the back up dancers verbally hyping the dance up). Once you complete the discography I suggest you look at some of their special stage dance practices like Halazia, Guerrilla and MAMA). The lady BBTrippin dancers are in Fireworks but I hope they continue to use them. I love that Mingi has his pack of BBTrippin male dancers and Hongjoong got a pack of ladies.
I like the ATEEZ x BBTrippin aesthetic and format A LOT! I think it's a winning formula if you ask me! And in Guerrilla, I totally agree that you NEED some for of hyping up to get through that thing haha!
Someone said it in the comments but their dancers are their choreographers. They go by BBTrippin. They have their own youtube channel where they upload original choreographies, most of which are their versions of the choreos for both Ateez and Xikers(Kq's second group.) I don't realy know much about them, but, from what i've seen, they really incorporate alot of krump but I'm not sure about breaking. To answer your question about their involvement, I think they start appearing more during their Fever series but have appeared the most in their The World series. Also, thank you so much for your in depth analysis. I'm not a professional dancer but I do know a thing or two about dance and I've personally learnt a lot of new things from watching this video. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
For some context on this choreo, there’s reasonably good evidence that the MV was initially filmed in early July with choreo for 7 members - the 8th member Jongho has had knee issues going back to at least 2021. He’s the one shooting the gun in the MV - he isn’t in any of the dance shots and there’s rehearsal footage without him. He had to be flown home for meniscus surgery in August and went on hiatus until October, then was performing seated until they debuted this song at MAMA. The members recently said they received the current (or similar) choreo in August or early September. It’s never been confirmed but it seems like most of the MV was reshot maybe in November - the military camp bits at the beginning and end and Mingi’s rap verse seem to be the only parts of the original MV that remain. My theory is that the comeback was supposed to happen earlier with Jongho performing seated and that the choreo was revised to allow him to participate without too much strain on his knee.
to me it seems that the comeback was always supposed to be during this time of year-- iirc, based on hair colors in the mv, they shot it during/after the asia leg of the break the wall tour (the august/september timeline makes sense for this). kcon la and jongho's injury/surgery had already happened by then, so they only had him on set for one day to shoot the bar scene with mingi, where he only has to sit, stand, and walk a little (source: ateez members' mv reaction/commentary) and he wasn't present while the rest of the group did the dancing scenes. i don't think anything was re-shot, i believe they just adjusted the formations, etc. for live stages probably in october/november, while he was recovering and his health team cleared him for more and more physical exertion.
@@violetceptionThey definitely did something in early July - look up BTW Hong Kong (July 15) and you can see all the hair styles from the military sections of the MV and concept photos fresh (it’s especially clear with San and Yeosang). Then look at Yeosang’s hair in the middle parts of the MV or the matching character photos where it’s really muddy - San’s hair is covered in those parts of the MV and in the character photos probably to hide how the red doesn’t match. Yes it’s speculation and maybe they just shot photos then for some reason, but that’s a lot of damage to Yeosang, San, and Yunho’s hair for photos that you don’t intend to use until November. There’s other weird stuff about the timing but the hair carbon dating definitely goes back to early July. Jongho’s injury and surgery were mid to late August and he wasn’t officially back until mid October. San’s hair was black in September - that’s when he was rehearsing and shooting Warriors, then they went on break for Chuseok.
@@mybrainisonfire that's a good point! you were way more keyed into specifics of the timeline than i was, clearly, lol (holy shit your hair color analysis was impressive). in that case it sounds like the military fit group scene was july/early august, with maybe the rest of the mv in august/early september? i guess we just have to wait for them to put out more info in the mv behind the scenes or in the second part of the behind ep fin: will video
@@violetceptionI’m really curious to see those videos too! I maybe got a little obsessed with figuring out the timing of this cb after being initially disappointed by the choreo and then realizing Jongho wasn’t dancing in the MV.
3:05 I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone who doesn’t vibe with Wonderland’s Choreo before wow - I just love it, one of my favourite choreos for me but I understand why this one way be more attractive for you as well
I will say I ended up also watching the “Kingdom” version of it and now I’m a total fan! The dance practice version had many issues that I analyzed and I’m happy that it was reformatted to what it is!! As a dancer I really loved this video! Thank you so much for reacting❤ Ateez have been using backup dancers for a while now and yes, they use it so good, it’s sooo smart using dancers for these kind of performances so the members can take a break and breath so they can perform and sing better and for a longer period of time!
i'd love to see your reaction to halazia! it was a comeback for the arts and not the charts and i find the choreo especially in the chorus is so beautiful!!
Just for the record, I love the choreo of Wonderland and I didn't see anything wrong with it to begin with. LOL. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Crazy Form is one of my favorite choreos of theirs. Outstanding.
I will say Patreon fans have helped me find a version of Wonderland (I believe the Kingdom version) and I just finished up recording that one and I will say... It's turned a new leaf entirely compared to the Dance practice fixed cam... It's definitely a whole vibe now!!!
