Ian Gillan was an honest guy while in the BS. He gave his best and his voice. Did not impose himself with his great voice and never tried to steal the throne of Ozzy. He was only one of the best rock singers in the world that passed through the BS.
Ian gillan-The God of pure magic, the only one person who can sing every song on those world, without thinking about it. Pure magic real God of Rock. Living Legend-Ian Gillan
This sounds a lot better than I expected, given Gillan has always said he wasn't a good fit for the band and that Ozzy had such a distinctive, baleful sound on the originals. Gillan's screaming, soaring vocals lend the guitar stuff quite an epic sound.
I think the thing with fitting in the band was timing, and it wasn't on Ian's side. Pity that too. I feel Ian and Ozzy were the two best Sabbath vocalists, and Tony must have liked him enough to work with him again on the Who cares stuff.
Ian really brings the muscle to this version! His bandmates here - always superb players - seem to move up a notch in tribute to him. This was/is the ultimate Black Sabbath!
Gillan does a great job here, though the key is one note lower: D rather than E. The tour is the reason his voice is damaged, as he didn't recover fully from surgery before it.
OMG!!! I love this man! Hot wired in red leather pants and a black vest. Hair down to there....never really saw your face....but to hear the voice sing and scream will be the moment of which I will end my life on. Thanks Ian for your gift to the world.
eu diria um dos, pois eu gosto do gillan, mas na minha opinião o freddie mercury ainda era melhor pelas notas que ele costumava chegar, o ronnie james dio também é outro vocalista muito bom
The only time I saw Sabbath was when Dio joined the band and I was lucky enough to see them on the Heaven and Hell tour at Manchester Apollo. I never could get into them with Ozzy. I first saw Dio on the rainbow rising tour at Stafford Bingley Hall and from then on I was Hooked. When Dio left I followed him and his Solo career and again saw him on many tours. I'm ashamed to say I have never heard anything of Sabbath with Gillan but as many of you have said this is an astonishing vocal performance from him when he was at the top of his game. As good as Ronnie was Im sure he must have been amazed at Ian's screams in the Heaven and Hell Finale to Paranoid. I am going to check out some more of Gillan's work with Sabbath now. Thanks for posting this it was certainly a "Well I never" moment 😃
This is superb! I went to school with a die hard, yet intelligent Black Sabbath fan. We was upset when he heard that Deep Purple had reformed for Perfect Strangers. He had hoped that it was David Coverdale. This guy love Ian Gillan at the helm and considered the Gillan/Sabbath albums as one of their best. Wow .. the man can scream.
I have news for you: It was the best version. Saw it 11/18/83. The temp. outside was 52. When I left the arena it was snowing. Iommi lost control of his feed-back during "Smoke On The Water"; creating amp distortion so loud people had their hands on their ears.
I love Black Sabbath and Deep Purple both equally and it if wasn't for them I wouldn't be the metal head I am today I tip my hat off to Black Sabbath and Deep Purple they will always be my all time favorite bands
I love Dio but something about him sounded off when he sang music from those first 6 Sabbath albums. Maybe it’s just me being so used to hearing Ozzy sing them
This is from the Worcester centrum. Nov. 11.'83. Worcester,Mass. The full show was broadcast live on WAAF radio. So it was recorded by hundreds that night. On our good old cassette tapes. This is available on many diifert bootlegs. Some are better then others. Cheers.
Talked to Ian on Top of the Pops show when they called me at my Home at about 6:30 am in the late nineties. I had sent in a question via the internet and got the call from Ian. That was one hell of a wake up call. I also saw Deep Purple in the ninties with Steve Morse on Guitar . Great show at the S.F. Warfield Theatre .
I wish I could have seen the look on my face at the record store when I first picked up the Born Again album, turned it around and there to my shock...Ian Gillan on vocals!
Long Live Gillan! He´s the best heavy rock singer with Dio, Ozzy has ever never reached the same level, and apparently, never will. Gillan keeps impressing me time after time again and I´veen listening his vocals very early, from 70´s.
Ian had a great voice back in the day and was one of the greatest front men ever, and besides being able to sing he also could relate to the audience, and Deep Purple phase 2 Blackmore,Gillan,Glover,Lord and Paice could have been one of the greatest bands in history if only him and Blackmore could have put aside their differences, those guys were at the top of their game when Gillan and Glover left Purple in 1973 after having great success with Machine Head and Made In Japan followed by Who Do We Think We Are which is a good but very underrated album and if only this line up could gave remained together and did a tour to promote it who knows how much higher they could have climbed, and nothing against Coverdale and Hughes because Burn and Storm Bringer were good albums too but then Blackmore left Purple to form Rainbow which lead to Purples downfall.
yeah but the new lineup isn't that bad. It's still Ian, Roger and Paicey. Ian is a class act and a true showman. But yeah, the tension between him and Ritchie is ridiculous
+Harold Herrera No. Not that kind of screaming. You could hear hints of it in James Brown and Beatles music and stuff like that, but he was the first to bring it in as a trademark hard rock thing.
I wonder, what would happen if Ozzy (no matter of what age) would try to scream the guitar-tunes at the end like Ian did? Would his rectum prolapse, would his eyes pop out, would he drop down dead? Something nasty in either case.
Hahaha :D This said, although Ian is by far the better singer - one of the best rock singers in history - I still prefer the rawness of the Ozzy years. He just fits with the original dark Black Sabbath tone. 90% of Sabbath I listen to is from when Ozzy was in the band.
Ian Gillan sounds fantastic anywhere!
I concur. He’s Ian fucking Gillan
This is Ozzy's song I don't care what nobody says nobody does like Ozzy
this is true
Much better vocal and look than Ozzy.

when i saw they did smoke on the water as an encore

What a fabulous vocalist and perfect for Black Sabbath @2:30 as Ian G. keeps going
Tony Iommi's guitar tone during the Born again era was the best. Crunchy, dirty and heavy. Like 36 grit sandpaper.
What a song, What a singer
One of the best ever
Absolutely Ian Gillan is the best...!!!
Best voice and the best looking man ever! ❤❤❤
forever Gillan the one ❤
Gillan's vocal range is incredible!
OMG heaven and hell .....OMG Gillan's voice OMG
Sabbath should have done more with Ian on vocals. Amazing!
Born Again is a seriously underrated period of the BS catalog
It's so different from usual sound though it brings unique charm. It's great that Ian had his episode in Black Sabbath.
His voice suits the song so well. If I had heard this before Ozzy's version, I would like this one maybe even more
GRANDE GILLAN!!!
Кроме как офигительно ничего не могу сказать!!!!!
да..но с ОЗЗИ лучше..а вот Дио более заметный след оставил в BS
Ian really brings the muscle to this version! His bandmates here - always superb players - seem to move up a notch in tribute to him. This was/is the ultimate Black Sabbath!
Ozzy was good but Ian had phenomenal range. I like 'em all
what a extraordinary voice,Gillian Scores!
Gillan sin duda uno de los grandes
Y con los Sabbath se escucha muy bien.
Ian´s voice is delicious to my ears.
+Jose Sanchez Seeing him as I did with Deep Purple, and then seeing him with Black Sabbath was freekin awesome!!! I saw them in Montreal,Canada 1983
Andy Smith : you're lucky.
Mine too 😵
This ian rocks
Gillan does a great job here, though the key is one note lower: D rather than E.
The tour is the reason his voice is damaged, as he didn't recover fully from surgery before it.
Шикарно. Гиллан на высоте как всегда и во всем.

2:30 - 2:50 Did anyone else get chills?
Infinitrium true that legit chills

Shit Gillan can sing Heaven and Hell alright!!!
Yes, great chills
More like punkstyle than heavy

Very nice..
I saw Ian Gillan with Deep Purple in 2002. Great concert in Dublin, Ireland

Gillan, the silver voice.
Gillan and Sabbath should have continued to record more albums.....I love this Black Sabbath era!!!!
Agreed!
Salvatore La Grasta *far too Satanic for 1983 audiences ... Born Again is golden today, however*
Luv 'em both, but Gillan is D.Purple man so much more 💜
But this paranoid waz orgastic, or somethin like it 😅♓💜
Agree totally. I like him more thani like Dio....
Ian Gillan: the true Metal vocalist prototype!!!
I kinda imagine Dio's vocal as a true metal

Dio
Gillan

@@dr0117 Yeah, but Gillan preceded Dio by at least 5 years.
The Ian Gillan live versions of these Sabbath songs are absolutely fantastic. He may not have fitted with the band but nonetheless he killed live.
Ya I truly agree
Ian is a great frontman

More punk/trash style than ozzy..sorrry 🤘💚💙✌💜❤🌍🎸
Just 💚🤘💜❤ adore Ian Gillan
the timbre of the voice of Ian Gillan is unique
I can hear some amazing screaming...also by the audience, who seemed to enjoy very much this wonderful line-up
Actually one of my favorite Sabbath releases

The greatest rock and roll screamer, bar none.

GILLAN FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After listening to all Black Sabbath singers i can say that Gillan does the best version of this song (apart from Ozzy obviously)
Well there's only 3 sabbath singers, to my knowledge so could have just said he was better than Dio. But I agree with you nonetheless.
ozzy sucks
