I think you could improve this by wearing a belt around the wool tunic. You can hang a knife or axe from it and it is easier than digging around in your underlayers, and most importantly it closes off the loose bottom of the tunic preventing drafts and loss of heat.
That Swannie is the bushman/hunter version they don't want a front pocket, this is to keep it sleek in the dense wet forest. One of the other versions has full length double zip that opens from top or bottom,it has a zip off hood and lower front side pockets and one small internal pocket to make 4 in total
I live about 4 hours north of you. The 32 Heat stuff from Costco is very affordable, easy to care for, and usually just right. A couple of weeks ago though, I found out that if you don't have a decent outer layer, or there is a good breeze, they are just not enough if you are inactive. I was wearing some thin, quick-dry pants and was just standing for a while and the wind cut right through them. So I went and found some military surplus "silk" bottoms and tops to wear when it's below 20 degrees and I am not moving around.
About 4 years ago i purchased a Swanndri throw over like yours. Mine did come with a pocket and it has an internal nylon wind blocker. Its saved me twice. The first time crossing the sierras (not the first as i live somewhere near near) i hadnt packed my axe or saws. Luckily i had signs and indicators as my front wheel drive underpowered car sheltered me with that coat
Good video. Great info & ideas. When in Army back in the '70's, I had a jacket made of an old style ponch & army wool blanket. Kept me dry 7 warm over in Germany. Keep up the good work & good luck on the tiny home project.
2 weeks ago, also in Sierra Nevada, the weather changed rather quickly. I just got done staying 3 days in the hospital from some stupid neuro problems dont have good axe for going back and forth. Well, i spent 3 days on the side of the road, luckily having layers and wool blankets and mylar for window's and myself. I had water and electrolytes. Just no money to purchase a basic axe. Money goes into the tank. Wool, water, signaling tools, and something to dig out of snow with to use after the tree has been cleared. Longest ive been stuck was last year for 4 days
Hahahaha Right on Time…I just got back from playing a Show, it was outside….48 and windy hahaha…And Here’s your video about clothes hahaha appreciate the whole breakdown..Not many folks talk about their layers…Hahahaha So since I knew it was gonna be cold and windy….I wore a thin wool mix long sleeve undershirt and a Wool turtleneck sweater from Scotland hahaha The only thing that got cold hahaha were my hands..Can’t really wear gloves playing the upright bass hahaha..Awesomeness Video Homeslice
That's a great system 🤙🏼 I too really like Meriwool 260g merino wool base layers. They have plenty of colors. Then a helikon tex pilgram top (like JJ wears) I don't use a scarf like that, but do wear merino wool gaiter around my neck. I made an anorak similar to your outer layer from a USGI blanket. But that Is reserved for the coldest of conditions. Typically, I opt for final thick thermal layer which is button up. Over that is a thin rain/wind jacket with hood. That allows me to keep the rain/wind barrier even if I have to shed the other layers. I might have to try a puffer vest, that's one thing ive never used.
I finally got a pair of muck boots this year and glad for it! Very similar to the lacrosse from what I hear. I got a size and a half bigger than my norm and go with the bigger boot socks, maybe even with those very same hiker darn toughs as a second sock. Had to learn the hard way for years before getting boots way bigger than I am used to but I can see now there is huge value in being able to have room for an air pocket in the toe area. Need to get a good pair of pants now that I can afford it, so I'm looking for something good for bikepacking and hiking which won't get torn in the seat and is easy to clean off out in the wild if needed. Going to check into the wool swannie that looks great. My outer shell holds in heat but traps condensation. Hoping to try vapor barrier liners like for inside my down sleeping bag so I can extend its life. Thanks for being a great teacher!
Ok, been watching your vids pretty much from day 1. Never heard the outro you said in this video. "Whats the worst that can happen, let's just go on 3".... Bam! There's your catch phrase.....
Wicking under shirt tucked into underwear. Over the calf nylon socks Wool base top tucked into wool base bottoms. Wool socks over the base bottoms. Then outer "street" wear. Then coats as required. 40 years in outdoor construction and recreation in over 15 states. Cold is easy. Heat is a different story. You can't legally undress enough to stay cool.😅😅😅
@ONThree Your a good man bro. Still gonna give ya shiot from time to time though. Your hilarious 😂 love your channal. We can see your passion for it too
I have to have a layer of cotton between me and wool due to the fact I itch.. otherwise I am gonna be on the hunt for a few things asap, or... find some quality wool fabric I can make what I need.
Thanks Jason
Nice system.

I used to wear one of those on the building site in NZ, back in the day. I still have one, great for hunting.

Spray your boots with flex seal
Not science...gods creation.... We're lucky to utilize it (wool coverall)... Awesome video 🫡

Moreno wool is expensive but doesn’t itch. A cotton base layer if you are active and sweating will freeze you.
Well that's good to know. Guess I'll just have to save up for the good stuff and get what I can
Thank you!
Also be nice for options for women 😂 skivies etc
I worked outside surveying for 25 years and camp still…. 35° wind and damp is the worst.
Well, this all looks warm and comfy but not for me as I am deathly allergic to wool.
