This is what I love about these older designed engines like this is the fact that someone figured out all of this without a computer I truly believe people had more intelligence and common sense back in the 70s when this engine was designed than they do now

Video's like these are yet another reason why this channel is far superior to others. A high quality in depth truck maintenance video that most, (if not all), other trucking channels don't show.
I don't drive truck nor have anything to do with them and I find this so interesting. Steve, the way you explain things is top notch. Thank you for filming all of this, when you didn't have to! 👍👍
I can't wait until Orwell fires up and blows some more beautiful coal!
I'm also anticipating to be on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding out of my chest on part two and three of the boat haul. How many clowns are we going to count doing stupid sh*t on those videos trying to 1up the pilot escorts and an oversized load? (my guess is at least 4) (one little, two little, three little 🤡 )

You don't need to remove the lower valve cover to adjust the overhead. Unless you want to reseal the base. By removing the lower cover oil will run down the back of the engine or debris can fall in around the push rods if you don't clean it out first. Do not remove the Jacobs Brake went you adjust the valves. Went to a Jacobs Brake factory school in the 80's and we was told to leave them on. Your valve lash will change after you reinstall them. I had a guy argue to me about this. So he adjusted the valves, installed the Jacobs Brake. Rotated the engine and the lash was different. Early 3406 B's had a 346B brake, which was a three point stand set to 0.070. Then Jacobs Brake came out with an upgrade and went to a four point stand. It was called 346B+, (25 more braking HP). The lash changed to 0.080. So your correct lash on the Jacobs Brake with a four point stand, should have been 0.080. I do not adjust the bridges, after they have been originally installed. You can if you like, however you need to know what your valve lash was before you loosen your adjustment screw. By loosening your adjustment screw, you do not know how your valve train is wearing, due to valve recession or a cam/lifter issue. Also on the 346B+ Brake, Jacobs wanted you to shim the brake. So you have your B washer on top of the rocker arm stud. Your A washer is used between the rocker arm an the stud. Install your Brake with the B washer in place. Torque your exhaust side hardware to ten FT LBS. Take a feeler gauge and measure your gap between the B washer and the Jacobs Housing. Jacobs has shim packs and you peel off/separate the shim as needed and mic them. Then remove the Brake and the B washer. Install the shim and then put your B washer on top of the shim. If your gap is out, you could crack your Jacobs Brake Housing. When you install the Jacobs Brake on your engine. You torque the nuts first to sixty FT LBS, torque the 3/8 bolt to 48 FT LBS. Since you have the add on 346B+ Brake, the 7/16 bolt torques to sixty FT LBS. Then your torque the nuts to one hundred FT LBS.

Man, you’re old school doing the driving and the maintenance
We have to drag out 21 Pete’s down to PACLEASE to service the garbage and fix an exhaust hanger bracket
It’s not like the old days when you had to fix your own stuff on the roadside, and try to make it home
I go to the Pete plant every day, and I wonder if any of the people that will drive these new trucks can do anything else but put the shifter knob to D and go down the road
Btw, WTH is a CB radio?

    • @fsctrucking

Personally I don't think they're that bad. Look at a Century Class, Cascadia etc, they are practically cabovers. The front wheel is only about 1 1/2 foot more forward than mine.
I believe that in the days of cabover, most were spring ride, thus rough.
