Changmin has a very clear vision of who he wants to be as an artist and I think that is how we end up with music like this. Intention makes all the difference.
there aren't many artists in k-pop in their 30s that are active as performers and most of them are probably in sm (in exo only sehun and kai aren't 30 korean age, but exo until boa are still very much active). I'm so glad that there's a new age range of active performers who gives a new flavor to k-pop and its growing audience (in age and in number). this can also be the start of a new era where the idols don't need to retire being idols at 25. I'm so happy for changmin too (and the other 2nd gen, 1st gen artists) that they're getting recognized past their original fandoms almost 2 decades into their career.
i've seen in videos some comments saying 1st and 2nd gen kpop artists aren't being treated well... and even complain about SM 😭 when SM is literally one of the few or maybe the only to still be pushing the older artists. The way the made SuperM is sth that was meant to introduce not so new groups to the younger generation fans, then they keep making collabs between old group and young group artists, songs and also interactions in variety shows and special segments or interviews. The SMTOWN concerts with all SM artists interacting... Also the recent GOT the beat with Boa, SNSD members... Plus Kangta and BOA, even if not that frequently, still do their solo projects and have a position as directors in the company. Kangta had a few releases last year, one in collab with NCT and Aespa members and with the SM Universe concepts in the MV.
TVXQ! is still ongoing, SNSD remaiming members also as soloists and as the subunit Oh!GG, same as Super Junior and SHINee.
I wonder what other company does it like they do. I know Shinhwa (originally an SM group) are still ongoing, not disbanded, although not quite active, or groups like 2PM recently or Highlight, after military they release stuff, but i truly believe SM is caring as much as they can for their senior members and as much as seniors always help promoting the new groups then also the young ones help promote their seniors. I like how they work as a big family

I agree with everything you said…. And I would just add to that SHINEE! they are still winning music shows and topping charts as a group and as solo idols. And most recently Super Junior! Who are still a top 10 boy group after so many years in the industry! So yeh, SM creating artists that can last for decades, not just just 1 album.
When the accapela intro started... It already had me hooked.. 💀 and then the song was just insane afterwards definitely one of the best releases so far this year.. also the bside fever from this album is INSANE ...

Chocolate wasn't really my jam but Devil IS THE SHIT. It's epic (and I hate that word). Everything from the vocals to the instrumentals and of course the mv itself is out of this world. I was blown away when I heard this song and it deserves everything especially your 41 minute reaction lol you are absolutely right about 30+ year old idols- they know who they are, what their sound is, what they want to express/portray- just who they are as an ARTIST not just an idol and it's very impressive.

Maniac sounds like a 70's-80's movie musical to me, sort of a Rocky Horror Picture Show sound vibe... and then the Psycho/Shining/Birds refences... gaaaaah, I love it! And Devil straight up sounds like an old black spiritual. So. much. soul.
FYI... The Shining is Stephen King... Psycho and The Birds are Hitchcock.
Also, you should totally check out his stage performance of Fever... reminds me of a reaaaally theatrical Fall Out Boy/Panic At The Disco track. And he's just GORGEOUS in it.

Maniac somehow only gets better the more you listen to it. His vocals gave it some extra flavour that didn't make me sick after listening to it maybe too much.
Take a look at his "Fever" stage, from SM concert. That song highlights Changmin as a performer like no other, he has never been this confident and charismatic, it's a performance that blowns you away, really.
I think SM upgraded their 'box' and bought one of those LED walls like they use in the Star Wars/Mandalorian series... it's turned up in so many SM productions lately... Favorite (Vampire), Savage, several of the stages for the New Years concert, etc. It's very cool and the possibilities are endless.
Changmin is simply incredible, his voice, his presence and HIS STYLE, NO ONE is doing this in Kpop, this is so epic. I'd love to see you reacting and reviewing "Fever" from the SMCU concert, it's my favorite b-side from the album, that stage is incredible! It was in 1080p when I watched it, but as today it is available in 4K, i'm going to watch it again right now because that music video and song is just TOO EPIC!!

I missed the Fever performance at the time but I went back and watched it after everyone was raving about it it, so good! and the stage performance for Devil is so cool too, I am quickly becoming a fan after only knowing him from judging Kingdom before lol. already went back and watched Chocolate and all I can say is WOW

Absolutely blown away by Changmin with this mini album, it's just fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised Devil ends up being my top album of 2022 already. Like you mentioned, older idols with over a decade of experience in the industry are consistently on a different level.

Not just the style that is different from Kpop but also the vocals.... When i got this notification i was like "i've never heard changmin...i know he is SM and i like SM.. Maybe i should check him out" and i did.... What stroke about him is his vocals i honestly didn't except this type of vocals in kpop, his voice is really powerful and beautiful. Also i find extremely charismatic not charming but charismatic as very strong aura and presence and i'm here for it
This makes me feel like such an old kpop fan. All these comments about just getting into Changmin and tvxq but i absolutely love the wave of new fans that are appreciating the pure talent they've been promoting these last, god almost 20 years now.

Changmin is one of the best vocalists around (not just in K-pop) and his strength is in being able to mix it up and not stick to one specific style or genre of music. Did anyone mention that Devil is a cover of the Alex Runo song released last year? Give the original some love as well.

OMG DEVIL FROM ALEX RUNO WAS USED FOR CHANGMIN??? I can't believe this, it was one of my fav songs from 2021!! I urge you to listen to the original too, it's incredible and powerful and truly has that soul. It's on Spotify. But Max ate this, what a performer and artist!! Maniac really gave me the Queen vibes, a bit of that Don't stop me now energy. I'll be definitely following him this year.
A lot of comments I wanna toss in here but I’ll try to limit to why maybe hasn’t been said haha:
The 4K version ended up uploaded to VLIVE. Don’t know why they messed up on YT. SM similarly dropped the ball big when they had initially uploaded Love Line (whole other story) - kinda sucks it happens to TVXQ as often as it seems to 😓
And as for the lighting in the forest: Changmin mentioned in an interview that the forest itself, they took a boat out to get to. And then it was lit and shot by use of drones that only had about a 10m battery life 😂
Also, by your re-classification of the different Changmin’s @30m, I realized something: the choreo as well. Dark and Light Changmin, the surrounding dancers are generally quite in line and in sync with him. Sexy Changmin is distinctly apart from the dancers, and either mirror him from afar, or, rather than dancing facing the same direction as him/flowing with him (toward camera), are turned and facing Changmin - as if trying to get back “in”/regain hold
Oh, also, the lyrics - like Chocolate, by Changmin 🥰
I kinda hope you’ll react to Fever, too. I know it’s a stage video and that SMP style you may not like as much, but it’s amazing to watch/hear just for Changmin’s command of his vocals, but also, I love that, as an SMP song and that style having this sort of set group of fans/consumers Changmin could easily have hooked by making this the title track, he instead boldly went with Devil which was a whole other (pardon the slight pun) beast entirely

I've known Changmin from early TVXQ when there were 5 of them. And for me he will always stay maknae, little boy, and it's kinda strange to see what a grown up man he's become! He always had that strong and high voice, which was a huge deal considering his young age. I like the fact that Changmin didn't lose his strong points, his recognizable signature, which is voice, charisma and esthetics. So proud of him really. Thank you for the reaction and review.

Devil gave me this uplifting vibe. Just hearing it and feeling the music gives me comfort. Changmin's solos are really different from what others do. ART. EXPERIENCE. PROFESSIONALISM. Maniac sounds like a mix of Queen and ABBA and I'm obsessed with it! My dad is a huge Queen fan and my mom is a huge ABBA fan, so Maniac sounds like straight up childhood to me! Add to that me being a cassie for over a decade and it's pure nostalgia though and through 🤤
He has always been amazing since his dbsk days in his high notes. Devil actually surprises me in that I didn't know he could do low sexy singing like in the first part of the song - it's so different from his usual style.
Then again, no matter how many times he sings his high notes, it will always shock my world.
I love your insights about the MV of Devil, you pointed out lots of details I missed and it makes the experience even better now. I'm having so much fun watching reacts of this release, because it's an unique experience that shakes everybody watching and listening Devil for the first time. Changmin wrote its lyrics and the Kwangya thing was "suggested" by some staff, since he was looking for a word like maze, some chaotic thing like this.
Changmin's voice is so unique and powerful that this is the mark for his solo works. Idols tend to pick a certain genre of music that usually becomes their brand as soloists and you know what to expect from them. Changmin's brand is his voice, he can pick any style of music that it will turn into "Changmin Music".
I had a lot to comment as I was watching the video, but can't remember anymore. I really love it, I was waiting for this react since the MV of Maniac was released!

but you're quite right there's a type of confidence and sexiness that can only come from maturity and experience. He's a master of his craft and he's letting the people know! I think it’s just with the newer Kpop fans that they’re underrated. They’re still ridiculously active and successful (especially in Japan), but they haven’t had a recent Korean comeback to introduce newer fans to them. 😕 With Yunho and Changmin being so active in Korea lately, I’m hoping there’s a comeback in the works. 🤞
@@Pajali exactly...they didn't have korean cb since 2018...they already missed out 3 years to represent themself as TVXQ. But I understand that after 15+ years in the industry both men want their own solo projects and want to create and build their own sound regarding their solo albums.

I came here to appreciate how pure art Maniac is with its iconic ABBA sound and the smart math behind the MV but there are truly few songs that made me sit down, take a deep breath and think how should I embrace them like how should I take care of them so they won't get ruined or even ask if I am eligible enough to carry them or not. Devil is definitely one of them. The song's heaviness is on a different catharsis level that urges you to not hold yourself back, lighten your weights and lift up cuz that's the only way to embrace its experience. I think Changmin's age and the experiences in years let him to pull that off in a right way. I hope we can see more aged idols who will bring a new level of maturity and transformation in the industry to diversify the sound.

The style of Devil kinda reminds me of Taemins Japanese MVs Sayonara Hitori or Flame of Love era.

This, in all honesty, is so unique especially for Kpop. Like none of these two songs sound like anything that is in mainstream kpop currently. Maniac sounds like something that jumped straight out of Queen's early albums and Devil sounds like a Southern Dark Country/Gospel song. Like i love this so so much

That was so fuuuuuun discovering the MV here ! During the whole Maniac MV I was like : Psycho ???? TIM BURTON ???? VERTIGO ? SHINING ? Dracula ??? THE BIRDS ???? North by Northwest ?? and then Alfred Hitchcock at the end with the mistake just made me laugh out loud AAH This just put smile on my face !
(I guess all the references are from Hitchcock movies but I didn't see enough of them to catch everyting tho)

I don’t even think I can begin to form words on how just perfect these songs are ( the entire album honestly, pure perfection ). He truly outdid himself, Devil felt like such an out of body experience when I first heard it and Maniac brought me right back to jamming out

I think the reason why the low quality is that they were only able to use a drone ti film the video. The camera that they were suppose to use can't be transported in the boat cause its too big. They filmed on an island.

Devil is like gospel hour at the Church of Satan. It's up there with not only one of my fave Korean/Kpop songs ever, but one of my fave songs ever period.

Devil is actually a cover! It's a song that came out last year by Alex Runo if you want to hear the english version (I personally prefer Changmin's lyrics more though). But I agree that its a masterpiece! It's been a long time since I've heard something that grabbed me like this.
I just recently found out that Devil by Changmin is a remake of Devil by Alex Runo! I love both versions of the song and I’m also obsessed with Maniac by Changmin!

I loved Chocolate, but I got goosebumps hearing Devil for the first time and oh my lord instantly fell in love with it! So so amazing 💚
I also noticed that right before the 1st and 2nd "Just let it rain" line, there're close ups of light!changmin. In the 1st one, he averts his eyes, which feels like he denied the devil's existence, but in the 2nd one, he stares right back at the camera, finally acknowledge the darkness inside him. This is such an interesting MV to disect. Thank you for your analysis, I really enjoyed it.

@@formoftherapy Yunho's album for 2021 was a masterpiece. It was in a Noir format where EVERY song had a music video of some sort and all of the songs had DIFFERENT vibes. Honestly, I think the ones that definitely need a reaction are Loco and Thank U (the title track). Imo, in terms of artistry, Yunho's album and songs(and mvs) surpass Changmin's Devil Album (and you know how good Changmin was this time)

In this mini album, he took on different styles and genres, which is just refreshing. Maniac and Devil specifically are tracks with styles he hasn’t had the chance to try.
I agree that these are different to Chocolate, which has a more K-pop sound. As a TVXQ fan since their early days, I loooove seeing him take on other genres because it just shows his skill, and what he’s capable of. I’m so proud of him.

DBSK are vocal kings of kpop and Max is the vocal king of kpop. I love how unapologetically hes himself and doesnt give a shit about kpop norms and wanting to just do whats popular. He knows hes the king and he shows it. He doesnt need to prove anything to anyone. After everything hes been through with DBSK and S.M hes still at the top! I cant wait for more. Max Changmin is a legend.
