What happens when you combine BURL and PINE CONES in woodturning?

- In this woodturning video, I combined two of my favourite and most popular materials I work with, what are the Australian mallee burls and pine cones to them into a stunning one-of-a-kind hybrid wooden vase. I used purple mica powder deep pour epoxy resin and finished with high gloss spray lacquer for a great glossy finish.

Hey all, I was sceptical about combining all these into one project but turned out great. It was also one of yours recommendation so give me any weird ideas please for future projects 😊
Have you ever added gem stones into one of your works?
So beautiful to my eyes, just amazing how you can transform so many different things from bits and bobs in pieces of artwork❗️🤩
Thank you so much Angela😀 I was sceptical combining all these but so pleased how it turned out. One of the viewers suggested so if you have any ideas don’t hold back 😉
I love the way the two colors of resin swirl around the pine cones. The patterns are mesmerizing. 😊
Glad you like them! Thank you 🙂
So beautiful 🥰 My soul always feels nourished and so peaceful after watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your art!
Thank you so much Katharina😀 glad to hear the positive effect of my videos and have a lot more to come 😉
Wwooooow! What a result! Love the effect of those pinecones... OK, I vote the next one be...
Cabinet Dowels, joint biscuits, and epoxy shavings!
Love that purple 🟣💜😇
This turned out so amazing, I really love the colors and the detail you used for it. Great job on it you are really talented with wood turning 👍👍
My wife really likes this one. Her exact words were oh, that is so pretty 😁
Thank you so much to both you then 😀
Awesome Awesome Awesome and stunningly beautiful
What happens when you combine burl and pine cones in woodturning? A work of art!
Also, the purple helps, too.
Beautiful David, another masterpiece. Thankyou.
Oh my God this is exquisite the colors are beautiful and I didn't know that's what you could do with a piece of wood perfection
wow. end result is stunning.
I love pine cones!! GREAT looking piece David
Good looking combination! Well done!
Thank you so much Doug 😀
That’s quite likely the coolest woodworking project I’ve ever seen, magnificent job !!!
Thank you very much
Truly magnificent vase!!! The purple really pops and brought out the beauty of the burl and pine cones. My heart stopped when it fell to the floor though! Excellent turning skills to get it from the plant pot denting to the lovely smooth shape - stunning work as always! 🤩👍👀🌲
Thank you so much! honestly my heart skipped a beat for sure when it dropped 😅 Wasn’t sure about pine cones and burl but pleased with the outcome 😀
Love the color of this one
I love that piece and the transformation at seven minutes with the first coat of finish is spectacular. Keep up the good work 🌞

Rewatching this vid and totally amazed by the craftsmanship here. Another very unusual piece.
Wow, beautiful!
That is beautiful !
What a wonderful and beautiful work!
Thank you so much 😀 What did you think of the colour choice? Purple is not my first to go to but liked how it turned put in this one
I can't stand these "epoxy EVERYTHING!!1"-projects anymore, but this finally is something really nice. Congratulations.
Spectacular vase David.
Thank you so much Jack😀
Brilliant work, looks exquisite.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
fantastyczne połączenie 😃😍
Thank you so much 😀
Congratulations, David, on the implementation of another COOL project)))))))))💪🙏
Thank you so much Igor 😀 i was sceptical at start how burl with pine cone would look but please with it now
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ it's really beautiful
Outstanding work
The pine cones look like crabs and scorpions. Super cool.
Gorgeous ✨✨✨✨✨
Love it!
Considering that purple is not one of my favorite colors I am surprised at my attraction to this. Beautifully done.❤
Your art never ceases to amaze me! Very beautiful work brother! P.S. PLEASE bring back the commentary 👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you so much 😀 It will return soon. Getting my life in order now and back on track soon 😉
BEAUTIFUL
Beautiful piece! The purple epoxy turned out so vibrant. I really like how you were able to get the epoxy to have light and dark purple for contrast.
That is beautiful
Beautiful work ‼️‼️‼️
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you very much!
My mom would love that
Wow ❤ love the colours you choose and the outcome was just gorgeous
Wow! I don’t normally like Either Burl or that particular color of purple resin. But my gosh, this piece is absolutely stunning! Totally changed my opinion of both of these preconceptions.
Amazing!
Wunderschön 👏
Beautiful
Thank you so much 😀
A beautiful piece of art. Your imagination is amazing. Thank you for sharing this priceless work.
Wow ! beautiful 🙏👍

Wow, bro - very beautiful!
Thank you so much 😀 What shall I do next? 🤓
Thanks for sharing.
That looks amazing.
Thank you so much 😀 What shall I do next? 🤓
Oh yes, that’s the purple…what a magnificent colour. Your turning, was of course, great. Although the ooops moment gave me a squeak of concern. But it turned out beautifully. 😃💗
Thank you so much 😀
Ohh yes I hear you my heart skipped a beat when it dropped 😀
beautiful
My favorite color! So beautiful!
Thank you so much Brooke 🙂 Not my usual concept but so pleased how it turned out . Already thinking to do something similar but in different colours. Any suggestion?
@@DavidsWoodturning I think any color you choose is going to look good. My first thought was blue or green. Can't wait to see what you create!
So beautiful! ❤ I want one of these too!
Although, I would probably go with a blue epoxy resin for mine instead of purple
Oh Wow! That is sooo beautiful. Thankyou for sharing this piece with us. 💥😮
You are very welcome . Thank you for the kind words Suzanne 😀
That came out beautiful. I would like to see it with a light inside of it. Great job!
Thank you so much 😀 Armm sadly it is already with the customer. But will make a pine cone vase soon the. 😉
@@DavidsWoodturning Looking forward to seeing it :)
Excelente trabajo ✨️👍
Like how there's just a little purple on the bottom and side. It could have just been on the bottom as a surprise.
Like how the sqirreliness of the pine cones goes with the grain of the wood. Like how the mixing of colors fits right in, too.
Beautiful. I was amazed that you don't wear gloves for protection. You are great in your craftsman 😊
Wow
Absolutely gorgeous, such talent! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much 😊 What shall I turn next?
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Simply beautiful
Thanks so much 😊 What shall I turn next?
@@DavidsWoodturning how about a bird house, a resin ball inside a wood ball, a resin ball inside a cube. Whatever you do will be amazing to be sure! God bless. 🙏🏻
@@DelphineMWirth ohh I like them. Will plan something 😉
Really?!? Incredible.
What happens? You turn them into something gorgeous! 🤯
Oh my goodness that's stunning!
You know I'm loving the color! 💜💜
Has an irredescence to it. 💜🤍
The combo of the burl and pinecones go so well together!
So beautiful! 😍
Have a wonderful Easter! 🐰🐤💐
Happy Easter! The funny thing I would have probably never combined pine cones with burl but actually some one suggested that so I thought is a cool idea. Have you got any suggestion what would you like to see?
@@DavidsWoodturning You already used my favorite color in this piece. 💜
Have you ever saved all your scrap wood & any other materials and turned them into a work of art?
That would be pretty cool! 😁
@@MsWDWFAN1 i have some recycled projects on the channel already plus I am working on some off cuts burl projects. Even if they small left overs of mallee burl i cannot throw them out so keep them until i have enough to make a project 😀
It’s probably just the colours but it reminds me of Van Gogh’s Stary Night
You do amazing work. I learn to turn in a state children's home named Hawthorne when it actually helped children. I have always wanted to get back to it I LOVED IT! I excelled at it! I'm in Michigan if you might know where I could go and get into this beautiful art again?
Did think that was going to turn out very good but it came out looking beautiful 👍😊
Thank you so much 😀
NICE
Thank you so much Tim😀
Despite the ooooops, great outcome
Thank you so much 😀 For a nervous moment picking up the piece to check on damages. But survived 😀
So awesome. I think you should use your long wood that look like a snake. Make a awesome weights for the book with glow in the dark or put light on the edge or something. Cause that is so cool.
Thank you so much 😀 Also for the recommendation 👍
I would love to see your take on a galaxy object, like an egg
...wow, David...that turned out amazing!!!...congrats...👍
Weird ideas???...well, I keep waiting for someone to do something interesting with a sponge gourd...🤔
Matt
Thank you so much 😀 That is certainly a weird one 😅 cannot promise but will look into that 😀
@@DavidsWoodturning ...👍...by the way, how are those bongos coming along???...😅😂🤣
@@_zhawkeye_9808 actually i did look into it if can buy a DIY kit then i can just make a body (i am sure that is not the technical name of it 😅)
@@DavidsWoodturning ...decent hardware will be rather expensive...but a much cheaper alternative would be to just purchase a cheap set of bongos...strip them down and attach the hardware to your totally cool and massively impressive awesome shells (or body as you put it)...😉👍
One thing for sure...if you don't tell everyone up front what you're making, very few would be able to guess it...😆
Matt
Wow. Not fond of purple, but that's gorgeous. Thank you.
Thank you so much Ebba 🙂 Not my usual concept and colour but so pleased how it turned out . Already thinking to do something similar but in different colours. Any suggestion?
@@DavidsWoodturning Forest or Hunter green would be my choice... or a royal blue. Is there a way to embed lights into the resin? Maybe not... but that would really bring out the pattern.
@@2CraftySeniors yes I am thinking of making a resin pine cones lamp 👌
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you 😀
I also end up with a lot of tear out on my epoxy pours.
Awesome can you tell me what is the pressure tank for epoxy called?
I love it so much!!! It's on my mantle. Trying to find a light to put inside to show off the amazing acrylic colors ❤❤❤❤❤ any suggestions on the light?
Thank you so much Stacie 🙂 Sorry that it took so long to get out the longer edit :)
Defiantly something that does not generate too much heat. Neither resin and lacquer finish can stand well with high temp. Something with LED as they tend run at low temp.
Maybe the battery powered fairy lights? They make so many battery powered votives too. Amazon or Etsy is a great place to get ideas. You could back light it too. Good luck. You have a nice piece .
Thats amazing. Is there any way to cut down on the biproducts ? Is the material recycled ? Making it more environmentally friendly. Seems like a lot of waste.
Very nice piece. Do you worry about moisture content of pine cones and not stabilizing? Want to try that, thanks for the inspiration as always.
Thank you so much 🙂
Not really. They spend hours in the oven before casting. Then the many layers of lacquer will pretty much prevent taking in / out moisture in the future.
Fantastic!!!
just a couple clarifying questions...
Did you kiln-dry the cones/ wood beforehand to prevent gassing?
Also I'm assuming you're using the pressure pot as a vacuum pot but I figure I better ask... ;0
Keep up the great work!!!
Could you do this without the vacuum or would there be too many air bubbles?
Im very new to this channel, but could you turn, say, an egg shaped object, or something? Maybe even a bowl
With one of those turning he produces more microplastic than Tonga or The Maledives per year.
Will the pinecones fall apart in this?
what do you do to be able to lift this out of the mold like you do? I usually end up destroying my molds.
Using a good mold is key. This was a flower pot but works perfect for this application. Also, use negative rake cardbide bits for resin
Thank you. The pots I usually use are paint mixing buckets from Lowes or Home Depot or a local building supply store@@DavidsWoodturning
Looks nice, but what is it?
Do you sell these?
Another great turning buddy. What's happened to the voice overs 😢😢
Thank you Steven. I am having a slight roller coster time outside wood turning and not having the right encouragement to do voice overs. They will return but need a little time to sort things out
how much is it
I am sorry this is sold. Was made to a customer commission
ok.
Looks somewhat surreal, but very beautiful.
It's just sad that so much material is lost during the process...
