Intro: 'Meditations On A Winter Night'
The 'Little Drummer Boy' (originally known as 'Carol of the Drum') is a popular Christmas song written by the American classical music composer and teacher Katherine Davis, Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone in 1941.
It was recorded in 1955 by the Trapp Family Singers (of the Sound of Music fame).
The lyrics relate to how, as a poor young boy, he was summoned by the Magi to the nativity where, without a gift for the infant Jesus, he played his drum with the Virgin Mary's approval, "I played my best for Him" and "He smiled at me".

This song, 'The Little Drummer Boy' was the first record requested one Christmas sung by The Harry Simeone Chorale back in 1958 or 1959 so it holds a special place in my heart. The history of the song is always a pleasure to read as Doug has spent much time in research as well as producing such a beautiful and historical video. In all there are approximately sixty-eight photos in this song. I do love the introductory instrumental, 'Meditation on a Winter Night' that is slow-paced and portrays the long arduous journey to Bethlehem by Mary and her husband and protector, Joseph.
At 0:30 stone markers photo indicate perhaps the direction or a mile marker to Bethlehem.
At 0:47 shows how the couple were in a state of despair as there were no rooms available in the city of Bethlehem, however the couple were told of a stable where they could stay.
At 1:00 the boy child is born in dire poverty, wrapped in swaddling clothes and shortly thereafter starts the lyrics sung by Neil Diamond.
"Come they told me" at 1:14 is where the wise men asked the little drummer boy to visit the new-born baby and at 1:33 is where the three wise men are shown following a bright star on their journey to Bethlehem.
"I am a poor boy too" is where the little drummer boy appears at the baby's crib at 2:23.
"The ox and lamb kept time at 2:43 shows a charming scene with a youngster with his drum and the animals in the stable including an ox and a lamb.
"Mary nodded" at 3:26 in approval of his gift of song.
"Then He smiled at me" at 4:13 showing the Baby smiling at the drummer boy.
The finale shows a dark blue sky laden with stars in the foreground with a faint picture underneath showing a type of mystical Mary holding the Child in her arms.
Then at 4:35 the picture underneath the night sky amazingly brightens and becomes the focal point of mystical Mary and her Child overshadowing the star-studded sky.
