FIRST REACTION to the entire NIGHTWISH album "HUMAN NATURE" | Track 4: HARVEST (SURPRISINGLY GOOD!!)

- Hi Guys!
I'm reacting to the whole album "Human. :||: Nature." from Nightwish, and today I'm reacting to the 4th track on the album, HARVEST.
This one was surprisingly good I think, as I noticed from the comment section, it was less popular than the other ones on the album, though I was pleasantly surprised!
I'll do a song from that album, every 2 weeks, going chronologically.
I already reacted to the 1st track, MUSIC the 2nd track, NOISE and the 3rd track, SHOEMAKER.
The next Nightwish reaction will be to the 5th track, PAN.

Like any great poetry Tuomas' lyrics in this song lend themselves to many interpretations. In case you and/or anyone else should be interested, I think that the lyrics are a message from death to mankind & Troy is in fact death personified who sings them. It contains a reminder that death inevitably waits for us all (i.e. we are death's harvest), but also advice on how to live our lives to the fullest ("Offer light to the coming day") taking care of one another, our children and our planet for generations to come ("Inspire a child", "Water the field").
For me, verse 1 is death personified telling that once we are born ("Tiny valorous straw") we will also die, but between birth and death we have time to live as death "will pause before a man
whose path has just begun" a life and make something of it while approaching death ("Something unsung our way comes").
Verse 2 tells that nature teaches us that every living thing must die (The quaternary code is a structure shared by all DNA, and yes, misspelled in the lyrics) , and death is always present ("The strange peace of storm hovers over crops"), although as children, we don't realize it or worry about it ("And a child's face aglow before the scythe").
The chorus tells us that humans are no exception but all living species face the same destiny ("Join the harvest of hundred fields") in death ("All going back to one single grain"). However, we should live our lives to the fullest without fear of death ("Offer light to the coming day") & inspire the next generation to do the same ("Inspire a child") while taking care of our planet ("Water the field") before we die, i.e. "surrender to the earth".
For me verse 4 is difficult to interpret, but I think that it tells us that although we could enjoy life to the fullest ("They have beauty beyond all poetry"), we tend not to do so ("But choose a silent misery"). And the more we let that happen ("The deeper their sea"), the less there is to enjoy ("The less remains"). There are also those that try to control how we live our lives ("They'll find the pretty words and tame flocks to herd"), but we can choose to resist and enjoy our lives to the fullest ("a carousal of dare")
Finally "Arrive alive" means that one should live his/her life to the fullest (i.e. be alive) before it's time to die (i.e. arrive to life's destination in death).
P.S. It could also be that the 5 crosses that one sees in the lyrics video refer to the five stages of man's life: conception, birth, life, death & decomposition.
Others have also interpreted them as the other five members of Nightwish among whom Troy walks in the video, although why would just Troy be alive & the others dead?
P.S.S. It also helps to know that in one interview Tuomas told that this song is "Nightwish smiling at death".

There is one gravestone for each band member in the video. The harvest gets referred again in "Procession". Also, notice that the piano melody in the end is cut off before it gets to the closing tone.
I interpret the "arrive alive" as "you shouldn't be dead inside when harvest comes, so live your life fully until the end".
Unless I have missed it, there is one gravestone missing, I have only managed to count 5, not 6.
I've had the album on repeat in the car for a while now, and it doesn't really matter which song is playing as they're all quite good. Harvest was very surprising when first listening to the album and I didn't really care about it too much back then, but it's grown on me over time much for the same reasons you stated in the reaction. Then it's time to move on to Pan, or Pancake as it might also be known. Emppu the guitar player stated in an interview that it's a difficult song for him to play, and thus can result in becoming a Pancake.

This album stayed on repeat in my car nearly all last Summer, which was totally by accident. One day I meant to put in one of their other CDs, grabbed this one by mistake, but then I just got in a groove with it. Kept me in a positive headspace for weeks. Only removed it to make sure I didn't burnout on it. Its too good to allow that to happen. I try to discipline myself and balance out my plays, so that all Nightwish albums continue to feel like rare treasure each time I play them.
Harvest is a hidden gem!
What I mostly like in this band, is that they do what ever they want. They really don't care what fans and people waiting and want to hear, they just do what they want and it's nice if others liked too.
They do music for themselves without a care of radio time or top hit singles.
Just pure joy of music.

I just read today that Nightwish working on next album. Their 10. It wont be out till late 2023 or 24.
In the first part of this song you can also hear sometimes a very low male voice in the background: that is also Troy, he can sing amazingly low. Listen to one of Tuomas’ side projects: Auri. On their second album Auri II is a track “Fireside Bard” where the male voice sounds as if Leonard Cohen has risen from the dead and learned to sing. That is Troy!

I like this one as much as every other track and find Troy's voice soothing. You have called it Track 3 in your written description but said track 4 in the intro which is correct.

Well, this was a little too big surprise to the most narrow minded fans. To me this was not a surprise at all. I saw it coming. Musically it's something like a "Lion King meets Jethro Tull". I liked it instantly. You get the message very well. I think that "Arrive alive" means, that you should live the fullest before your time comes. ⛄👍

I don't know ifi tso much people dont like it but it was so different to what everyone was expecting for the second single from the album that it caught everyone by surprise on release.
Great analysis. Hadn't really thought thru the meaning of the song but your interpretation of the lyrics seems spot on. If this is folks least favorite song on the album then it is only because the others are just so amazing. I love this song and everything on the album. I am really enjoying this journey with you.

Hi Yuri, you know Tuomas loves Disney right? The stringed instrument is the bouzouki, and Troy sings the deep bass vocals in the a capella chorus sections. You might try listening to some music by Scottish band Runrig? My favourite is 'Skye' (live). Take care

This song always gives me like a worship vibe. The chorus sounds like a church gospel kind of thing.

arrive alive - live your life to it's full so that when your time is up you are still "alive". In a harvest you want to harvest the live grapes or grains and not so much the dead or shriveled on the vine.
When your time is up be ripe with the success of your life not full of the regrets of a life unfulfilled. This is my interpretation.

Hi Janet, thx for the suggestion! I understand your request, it fits in that current situation. But I feel I don't know enough about the Ukraine and Russia situation to express my opinion about it and I know that is a very sensitive topic. So I might very well react to that one from Dimash but without diving into the whole conflict that's going on.
@@YBPlaysMusic definitely understandable, not asking for anyone to have a political discussion and the song doesn’t either really.
Personally I am a bit ambivalent about this track. Really Love the instrumental interlude, so I'm quite disappointed that the rest of the Song does not follow more in that vein. Dont get me wrong the rest is pretty and troys voice is soothing, but compared to the instrumental part it just doesn't really do it for me. If it had more along the lines of the middle instrumental part it would def be Up their with my faves.
