“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays” Søren Kierkegaard
It’s insane how calm and moving bishop barrons words are in comparison to anyone on that table.
It’s like as soon as he talks, everyone is hanging on each word!
He's the real deal.
are yoiu insane ? that this jerk is still bishop defies comprehension. he is close if not already heretical. if you are not catholic i can understand. peterson has been the subject of miraculous events and is still resisting to the core of some evil in his soul truth. I see this and if he would at least get to the point of SHUTTING UP HIS ignorant mouth about these questions in the face of dispensation for his wife i could deal with this.
Catholicism clears up MOST of the confusion of living - and with that comes peace
I always feel that with god believing people are like that
"I'm not good at prayer...I wish I was."
"You could pray for that."
Comedic gold.
I rather enjoyed that 😂
Let's just try and have less word salad in 2025
Dr Jung offered in a filmed interview when he was 80; "I dont say there is a God; I know there is." Evidently Dr Jung forgot he had previously made the opposite argument in the same interview. Arguably the rift between Gus and Freud was based in that recurring contradiction.
How is that comical? This is exactly what christians pray for all the time….
Only Jesus Christ, communicating within the Trinity, and the angels in heaven (& possibly the saints in heaven) and of course Virgin Mary (!) are good at praying. We, mortal humans, are on a journey, but always drifting astray like sheep

It is incredible that the whole table, including Peterson, turns to the Bishop for the answer on what prayer means.
He's literally a bishop, why wouldn't he be the first person to ask?

My only prayer: please God give me the strength and wisdom to do your will.
Well, pray in your closet as Our Lord told us and not in public, as He warned us not to do, and you’d have a good start on following His will.

My dad passed away this morning, he hung on bless him until 2025. He wasn’t suffering he was just wasn’t aware of his circumstances anymore. So when he died I felt awful that I felt hadn’t prayed enough in the days before his sudden health deterioration which made him end up in the hospital in the first place. But it then sprang to my mind that I was being foolish and I just said the Lords Prayer and felt an immediate relief. This first pastor is correct just say the Lords Prayer if you are feeling out of sorts, or are feeling guilty you’ve not prayed enough.
I would like to extend my condolences to you and your family in this time of loss. I have felt the same pain.
A point to remember is that God lives outside time. Therefore, a prayer said now for a situation in the past will land at the right "time". There is a time paradox involved in that that I can't wrapping my mind around. The nice thing is that I don't have to. God's got it.

Bishop Barron does a great way of eloquently speaking on what prayer truly means. He has such a patient way on giving a thorough explanation. ❤
Bishop Barron is an excellent teacher, he is very smart, but also very open to all sides of an argument. He is very good at explaining things and doesn't let Jordan's intellectualism blur the real meaning. Dr. Peterson is also excellent too, not a competition, just a note.
Bishop Barron is also an intellectual, and he has often spoken of his utter distaste for the anti-intellectualism of the 1960’s Catholic Church and his love for the rich intellectual traditions of the Church.

I'll be sad when there's no more clips to take from this series, really enjoyed the Gospel being dissected and discussed by intelligent men. Thank you for this series!
Peterson did a good job of directing the conversation rather than taking it over here.
Also I really appreciate that an atheist and Jew were invited into the discussion. That’s such a valuable perspective that we Christians don’t often get to hear in a civil conversation.
If only a woman had been invited to participate...

I have started to pray more recently and what I have discovered is that God responds in very subtle ways. When I come to God in prayer with a challenge or something that is worrying me I don’t hear words speaking back to me. I hear God speaking through my consciousness telling me that I need to trust Gods will or that I need to do the right thing or that I shouldn’t be afraid. The more I have prayed and put effort into removing myself from my vices the more I have come to know God in prayer.

14:07 Buddhism is essentially seeking to eliminate desire. To not be overcome by it, to let it destroy you.
Christianity is redirected desire to its proper place: towards God the Father through Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Desire is not something to be destroyed or eliminated or treated as a negative, but it is for God’s purpose and worship. Accepting this and submitting to it is fulfilling, it’s the cup that runneth over
Prager got it: Praying is you speaking to God,
Reading the Bible is God speaking to you
as you read & reread the Word of God, you tuck it firmly in your mind and meditate on its meaning for your life, God will reveal His will to you as you walk through this life following His gentle guidance. By making room in your heart and mind for God's word, He will reorder you prioritize, and perceptions to align with His. In this way prayer, as Jordan appears to be saying, is the exchange of ideas similar to human conversation only without the interference of the motor cortex.
No. Prayer is listening to god. Period. Be still and know I am God. When we talk in “prayer” that’s called prophecy. ( not telling the future) rather speaking out the present desire of God for you and those you influence. It’s has nothing to do with your wishes and everything to do with HEARING HIS WORD spoken in you. Then by faith, lived out of you.
Prager gets a lot of things most of us do not.
@@donvictormethod I disagree. Prayer is dialogical, but God's Word is Alpha and Omega.
Virtually all prayers are asking something in a submissive manner like bowing, getting on their knees or putting the head on the ground. The word Pray is a Farsi word "pool-bedeh" which means give [me] money [usually for food]. Jesus was able to help and teach the people to cooperatively produce their own food and build their own homes using trees and cross-joins and nails [which was his invention] so they did not need to pray/submit to the khans and landlords anymore. After the crucifiction of Jesus Landlords forced everyone to pray/bow to them for free.
" Dearest Father and Almighty Creator, we ask for Your grace tonight, despite our pride. Your forgiveness, despite our doubt. Most of all, Lord, we ask for Your love to soothe us through these dark times. May we face whatever is to come in Your divine will with courage and open hearts of acceptance, Amen ."

Prayer is not just personal it is collective. We are the body of Christ and all our prayers together are heard as one.
For me I have found the primary purpose of prayer is to make our will like God's will. To change what we want into what God wants. Not a shopping list for the Almighty.

If prayer is defined as engaging in communication with God, then sometimes prayer for me is just expressing gratitude for His wonderful creation.
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner. ☦️
We are so lucky for this content. Wow. Free academic discussion for free.
Christian prayer, for me, is a cooperative openness to receiving from God in humility.
Not merely a making myself worthy to pray in His presence but knowing that I'm not, and having done what I could, trusting in God's love for me is greater than my weakness, failures and unworthiness.
It's a giving, receiving, listening, and speaking, in real relationship which exercises my faith and trust in His love, conquers my doubt and turns shame into real self knowledge and trust that His love and power to change me into an image of Himself in whatever way He desires is possible. It's believing that all things are possible for Him and nothing is impossible for Him.
It makes possible the forgetting of what lies behind, including submitting the image of myself I had in mind, the who I want to be.
And straining forward to what lies ahead; to whom God created me to be since He is the Author of my identity which includes my name, family, people and time He placed me in.
A unique reflection of a facet of God's image that I and every person is meant to reflect.
I think this is what St JPII meant when He said, "Christ reveals man to himself."

"Prayer is cooperation with God towards moral progress." - Marcus Aurelius
I agree. As Christ told us "be perfect as your Heavenly Father is Perfect". We ask God in our prayers to hear our pleas, to guide our actions and thoughts so that we might be in Him and He in us. We should strive to be more like Christ in all that we do. It was St. Paul who told us also what we should strive for, Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Our aim is to be in constant spiritual dialogue with Christ, as we are souls that have a physical body. So the animating principle is the soul, without it we would not exist, (CCC 363-364). The "world" has reversed that by telling us that we should give in to our appetites, as it tries to make our bodies the principal animating object and our souls secondary. When we follow what the "world" wants we lose our sense of connection with God or become lost and we must find our way back like the Prodigal son.
In Christianity, we are called to become gods by grace, not mere moral improvement. its why the ancient christians didnt really talk much about morality as much as being sanctified.
We will all one day realize that our lives were a one on one conversation with God. He asked us in experience and we replied in our actions.
God knows us, he knows our thoughts and hearts. We as humans sometimes allow the world to overwhelm us. So we have to stop. Pray immediately for God to please open our thoughts to you of your word, submission to allow Him to listen to his healing answers
To communicate with our Father, is rhe primary reason we should pray

Thank you for the recommendation :) I was hoping for feminine insight and she is definitely someone I will tune to.
Perhaps nuns and religious sisters could be a good addition, assuming they are well-educated.
Denis Prager said “I have a confession: I’m not good at prayer vis a vis God (face to face) but I’m good at listening [to] my Bible…God’s talking there; I’m much more interested in what God has to say than what I have to say.”
I really like that atheist fellow on the end of the table, he is so polite, asks great questions and directs the egg heads in the group through a more lay way of thinking which will help others watching to engage. He also seems like a top bloke 👍
John was asking about the listening element of prayer, or receiving a word from God, as in a dialogue between two people. I do agree with the last point that the Word of God, the Bible, is key and it is God speaking to us. In addition to that, and speaking from personal experience, in that time of prayer, as you are speaking with (not to, but with) the Father, it's almost as if He is speaking through you, through the Holy Spirit. Your words aren't necessarily coming from your own thoughts but His inspired thoughts, and if your ears and spirit are tuned in and listening, you will hear and recognize God's voice in that prayer. I hope this helps someone! Thank you Gentlemen for this amazing conversation you have invited us to listen to. God Bless!
Thanks, that's a great way to put it!
So does God really speak to people or it more of a push from the Holy Spirit? I often feel a little strange when people say “God told me to do this”. I think that is bizarre that God speaks directly to them yet never to me. Like maybe I’m not worthy (which is true in my case). Or as Dennis P said it’s all in the scripture. I struggle with this. Your thoughts?
@@Savoy_6 I'm reading the book "Fulfillment of all desire" by Ralph Martin (highly recommended!) which summarizes teachings of catholic saints on the spiritual life. It also talks about this. The opinion of St. John of the Cross is that sometimes God communicates via these so called "locutions", but he is rather skeptical about the large number of claimed locutions and writes "I greatly fear what is happening in these times of ours [16th century Spain]: If any soul whatever after a few pennies worth of reflection experiences one of these locutions in some recollection, it will immediately baptize all as coming from God and, supposing this, say, "God told me", ""God answered me". Yet, this will not be true, as we pointed out, these persons will themselves be more often the ones who speaks the words." So there you have the opinion of one of the most prominent christian mystics of all time!
More broadly, the saints teach (putting it into my own words) is that if there is some measuring stick for one's spiritual life, it is whether it increases one's love for God and love for neighbor (and other virtue). Supernatural experiences are not necessary for spiritual growth, and they are only useful insofar they increase your love for God and for neighbor.
So to summarize, there is no need to deny that sometimes God speaks to people like this, but there is reason to suspect that a lot of the time it is just the person's own thoughts. And there is not something wrong in you as a christian if you don't receive messages from God like that. Increase in love for God and neighbor, and other virtue (like faith, hope, patience humility etc.), is what matters!
To pray is the only essential act that makes our days worthy

This makes me realize that no matter how intelligent you are, we all seek answers through prayer.
Bishop Baron has reminded me of the power of words. Thee and thou and thy/thine do not mean you/ me etc they mean you and me in the presence of God. That right there means you have to transcend your ego and be only your most authentic self. Imagine if we only spoke to each other believing God is in the room with us. Imagine that.
I too am struggling with prayer. I make an effort to not ask for things for me. I did recently read in Matthew that I needed to forgive someone who wronged me monetarily in a contract deal stealing thousands of dollars by not honoring our contract. This kept me up nights formulating plans on how to get even.
I stumbled on the passage in Matthew and reached out to my foe and forgave her the debt.
I immediately had no more sleepless nights having let that go from my life.

The ending was so rich and so good. The law of Moses represented inviting what seems to be a non believer to hear the Word of God as they even opened with John 1
There is so little in the Lord's Prayer that is centred on us and our "needs". Just one line "give us today our daily bread". It seems to me that it is designed to connote Prov.30.8 "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread." So often we are absorbed in our needs and wants yet Jesus grants us only one line in the prayer, all the rest having to do with the security of our relationship within the love of God and the need to expand God's rule in earth - primarily through our relationships. We are to desire only enough personally to sustain life but not too much or too little that may lead us away from a pure and sincere devotion to God. This means a life of constant reliance on God - to "walk" with him daily, which is in total concert with the rest of the Prayer..
Lovely conversation, ended with a gem 🤌🏾💛 God is always speaking to us through the bible 🥰 Its up to us to listen and pray and do his will 🤍💭

I have only recently started to use prayer in my day to day life. I guess I have always prayed when things were good, mostly to be thankful. But recently I have started a business with my brother and work is hard to say the least. It is work in an area that was unknown to me and is very physically demanding. The prayer I repeat first came to me on day 3 of 10/12 hour days of painting full loads of 10m steel strip (28 tonnes a go). My back was hurting, my eyes hurt, everything hurt and I said out loud “thank you god for my ability and strength to be able to do what I have been tasked with”.
I instantly felt empowered, time moved faster, I had a far more positive outlook on what I was doing and I left work @9pm with a smile on my face, appreciating the challenge that I was undertaking.

I like Vervaeke, he's intelligent and I feel like in his own way, he means well. It is clearly obvious though he has some sort of subconscious psychological resistance to anything of faith. It often feels like he is responding out of disbelief, and not an attempt at inching towards understanding.
Jordan also sort of responds to Bishops coherent spiritual teaching with a needless psychological extrapolation. If only they and would surrender what we desperately latch onto.
@@John.Christopher It's true man. Jordan is so bright, and I don't know what's in his heart, that's between him and the Lord, but I believe he's good and he would make a wonderful Christian, all assumptions considered.
@@John.Christopher An active form of listening is explaining what you heard in your own words. Jordan has spent all his life thinking about things from a psychologist's point of view. Fitting it in to that way of thinking is automatic for him. Perhaps it doesn't come off as directly spiritual as some of the others but on the other hand it probably helps the secular psychologist to see a bit more value in faith.
@@RuneValken He's done enough of it, though. Psychologizing it only brings you so far. It's deeper than psychologizing. He's forever in an endless platos cave, trying to make sense of it. At some point, they have to quit trying to come up with creative ways to make constant abstractions. It's like they're trying to reach zero by moving a 1 further and further down a decimal point. It's quite annoying after a while, all of their flailing. It doesn't help Vervaeke understand it either. He's just as stubborn in his own spin on it as he was a few years ago with this method of pointless vain abstraction when Bishop is speaking about something categorically different. Thankfully, Bishop is as patient as he is.
The “listening” in prayer is opening your heart and mind to feel and heart promptings from God through his spirit. If we must pray, we must have faith that God will speak with us. God speaks to us through His spirit which connects with our spirit. The answers come through inspiration, through our thoughts and feelings. God speaks through a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12)
Mr. Peterson, do not say what you will do tomorrow but let your be yes and your no. Be no for you cannot know what you will do tomorrow. Only the most high nose you must be available for him for anything he calls you to do
Hearing God in the "conversation" of prayer: The word, fellow brothers & sisters who also believe and quiet time to hear the still small voice Mr. Vervenke.
I pray all these become available for all on here
In prayer, I find when I ask, the immediate answer I get is God's response and reasoning with me, especially if the first thing that comes to mind is something I may not like or feel comfortable with. That is how I know it is the Lord speaking to me through the Holy Spirit. The Lord rarely tells us what we want to hear, rather what is needed or what is right.
I start by giving thanks for my gifts, God's mercy and grace. Then I pray for other's; I pray for people's safety, prosperity, and guidance towards the love and will of God. Finally, and only after the first two, I pray for my own guidance, strength, and any other personal needs. It's almost always better when I pray for "how to give God what he wants" rather than praying for my own personal gain.
This is the series that I was waiting for. This is that re-watchable I was waiting for.

If we live with the idea that we are always more interested in what the other has to say, we will know many people but none will know us. God wants us to speak to him as much as he wants us to listen. ALL relationships are built on communication.

As a Buddhist he claimed that compassion and wisdom are inseparable which hints to me, at least, that Buddhism is rooted in some form of moral religiosity or scope of virtue not typically associated with Atheists arguments. So I'm curious where Buddhism achieves a moral derivation without revelation.
@@JessieJoseph-y1wBuddhism recognises that compassion (one of its main ‘goals’) is preferable to antagonism. I would imagine that this lines up perfectly with natural order. I think morals and morality come from functionality and practicality rather than revelation. You can only get so far stamping on everyone’s toes.
The reason that people say God is synonymous with Love is because, under proper consideration, God is the creator of ALL things. God creates all things through us, the people. So if everything is created by God, through people, the best way to go about doing so is by orienting ourselves toward Love and engaging in the act of creation with Love. If you proceed to create things with different motivations behind them, the seeds you plant will grow to express those motivations. And over the course of time, those motivations branch out with a compounding effect. So when the tree is fully grown, it can have a damaging effect on its environment.
It takes faith and that desire that comes with it to soak up all the wisdom and knowledge that is all throughout the the Holy Bible. Believe your prayers are always heard. When we doubt we sink back into the cares of needless things satan provides in abundance.
Jesus prayed the Lord's Prayer while He was on earth. However, after His resurrection and ascension to heaven, the Bible reveals that we are also seated with Him in the heavenly realms. This means the believer's position is one of being already in heaven in spirit, closer to God than ever before.
It is a dialogue of LOVE! Simply!
And when you pray, adjust your focus and align your silence with the solemnity you seek.
