My dad was a jazz trumpeter and Harry James was his hero. My dad had a photo of me as a baby that was actually signed by Harry James, wishing me a happy life. He had it in his wallet until the day he died. My mom gave it to me and I still have it to this day.

I’m a 46 year old who had a dream about being at this very concert. A friend of mine told me that I watch too much You Tube. I just love Harry James that much!

I had a dream where I took my grandma and grandpas hands and I walked them to somewhat of a theater and they sat on one of those seats that were on a balcony for two. Kin of what Abraham Lincoln was sitting in before he was assassinated. Anyways I saw them sit down and I turned around and I saw tex Beneke (which was Glenn Miller’s lead tenor saxophonist and vocalist.) he was leading Glenn’s AAF band after he had died. Then out of nowhere I was in Tex’s shoes, literally I was Tex Beneke and I was conducting the band as they played “moonlight serenade.”

This is from the 1944 musical Bathing Beauty a breathtaking movie Esther Williams is a great swimmer and gorgeous Red Skelton is hilarious.....and Harry James and his band is incredible as you see here -- so much talent all in one movie, but that was what so many of these old movies were like -- great talent on so many levels -- that's why they endure

MGM always presented the big bands in their films so beautifully and well-choreographed. I met Harry James when he stopped by for an interview on the big band radio show I assisted on in my teens. Our studio was on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, where James and his band played for a week. This was many years ago, back in the late 70s, but I do remember he was very nice, cordial and still very enthusiastic about his music. I also remember he was the only name guest we had on that requested we play records from other bands he liked.

People say rock n' roll started with Elvis etc. in the 50s.
I disagree; this jitterbug-rhythm that closes this track is the tempo and chords of rock in my opinion.
And the dancing is very similar.

No sí, el rock comenzó en los años 50 con Elvis Presley, y aún prevalece.

Back in the 50s, most bands still had some brass backing, eventually gravitating towards the sax. But yes, I agree: the early rock rhythms were nearly identical to those of the great swing bands.

That sizzling sound from the trumpet section came because Harry had them all play the same mouthpiece: the Parduba Double-Cup No. 5.

Who was the drummer with the 50's 'do?

    • @ScrimmageDFW
      @ScrimmageDFW 3 роки тому +3

That's Micky Scrima, one of the best of the big band drummers, who also happens to be my Dad. He appeared in several movies with Harry James, but this one was his favorite, mainly because they were the most popular band in the world at that time, and they were shooting their scenes with a hundred or so of the most beautiful starlets in Hollywood, all wearing bathing suits! He always had a GREAT head of hair.

@@ScrimmageDFW you might have known Corky Corcoran, Jack Perciful and Red Kelly too? They all played with my Dad too, Don Ober (guitar). Corky during the late 30’s/earlier 40’s and Jack and Red during the 70’s.
