Richie Sambora is Ready to Rock! | Shred with Shifty

- As the premier season of the show comes to a close, Richie Sambora sends it off with a fun, free-wheeling episode that looks at his high-drama fingerwork on “Only Lonely” from Bon Jovi’s second record, 1985’s 7800° Fahrenheit. (The song’s music video is everything you’d ever want from mid-’80s hard rock.)
Richie joins Shifty subterranean-style, from his mother’s basement in New Jersey, where he’s equipped with a reverse-headstock Charvel, complete with a Floyd Rose system. It’s a busy time for Sambora: His first new single in 11 years, “I Pray,” dropped in late April, alongside a brand new, four-part Bon Jovi documentary.
For “Only Lonely,” Sambora recalls that he used just a 50-watt Marshall and a yellow Boss overdrive pedal to push it to the limit. Producer Lance Quinn captured the performance at the Warehouse in Philly in spring 1985, and Sambora hasn’t slowed at all since that day. Shifty takes a run at a few of Sambora’s blistering lead screeds before Richie takes the reins and brings it home. They don’t leave it at “Only Lonely”; as an added bonus, they run through Sambora’s famous licks from “Bad Medicine,” too.
Between solo runs, Richie talks about his current rig (no modelers for him, just old-school tube-amp goodness) and addresses the rumors: Will he rejoin Bon Jovi after 11 years gone?

Sambora was always my favorite player! As a drummer, Tico was the man! But Richie was so fun. His feel, sound, solos, song writing. All of it just incredible. I love his first solo album, Stranger in this town. This is truly awesome!
It's mental hearing Jon saying, "Bonjovi wasn't a reliant guitar band, like ACDC or Van Halen"
Richie made Bonjovi super cool!
Without Richie, bon jovi was nothing… lets face it!!
Its true 🫠
Completely... his voice and song writing made them a proper group... my fav album is These Days... seems like Jon let him get on and play in that 1
@@maus_drummertrue
What a legend! I could listen to him talk and play all day long!
Stranger in this town was so good!!! Legend
That’s a great song, album. The living legend 🎶🎸🎼🎵🎤🎸🔥❤️
I have that cd and I play at least one song from that album every night

Richie is why I play n sing today. I'm 46 and won't quit ever. Blessings from South Africa 🙏🏽🇿🇦
Richie is why I leaned the blues lol 😊
Richie is a genuine guy, he has no filter. ❤️
He's Soooo Jersey! I'm from Jersey love it ❤
Kudos to Shifty for taking the time to redo it, with full respect to the guest, respecting his privacy and staying quiet patiently till he could finally do it - thank you!
Yes, waaaaaay better interview! I saw Jovi open for that same RATT Invasion tour, in Chicago!
Redo?
the first one from September 2023 was taken off YT after a couple of days
@@marekgitarzysta5193 Oh wow, was Richie drunk as fuck?
Yeah, he’s in way better shape than he was in the first interview and that’s cool! Happy to see it!
Great to see the old Richie back!!!
How can anyone NOT love this guy as well as his guitar playing?!?
That someone would be Jon Bon Jovi
Me, he’s a jackass, sorry if we disagree but not everyone will
he kinda sucks
@@easilyoffended7772 are you saying Richie sucks or Jon sucks? I hope it’s Jon you are talking about. Yes Richie has had his problems, who hasn’t, but he is a fantastic person as well as guitarist and musician. He has a great voice too. Much better than Jon

You will make everyone more than happy if you are back with Bon Jovi again. Can't wait, Mr. Richie!!
WOW! I did not want this interview to end. He looks and sounds amazing. I’m so happy for him. I have to say this. Without Richie and hearing John’s voice now , the band will be put out to pasture. Only Richie can save the next and final tour. It was never the same to begin with but merely survived. Good luck Richie
Thank you Chris for not giving up on Mr Sambo!! He is the reason I picked the guitar up....Total Legend! 👍🏼
Me too
He's not my reason for picking up guitar, nor am I a Bon Jovi fan. But I am a fan of Sambora. This past year I just kinda fell into his music and the dude writes some killer guitar parts. He doesn't get the credit he should imo
Richie sambora is the most amazing person ever! He is a total package omg!! ❤
My guitar idol for more than 30 years. Glad they redid the episode :-)

Sooooo goood to see him doing better! This is the guy we love!
The world needs Richie's music and soul
Wow this Legend is so friendly and humble to show how to play the guitar. Amazing thank you!
God bless your mother Richie, my mother is 88 as well and she still rocking 🤟
Sambora is an absolute shredder. A true legend. Great interview 👍
What down to earth chaps! Richie is so sharp on the old recall. Great to see man
This was so awesome! So cool to see Ritchie jamming in his mother’s basement! Omg I could listen to him play and talk all night! 🤟🏻
Thank you for doing this . Richie is the reason I started playing guitar . I hope to meet him one day and thank him in person . He changed my life . I wanted a guitar and my parents would not buy me one so I went to cutting grass and washing cars so I could buy an axe . So he kept me out of trouble and taught me a work ethic . I've taken his music all over the world . I listened to his solo album Undiscovered Soul a lot on my Deployment to Iraq . Thanks again to you and Richie .
I met him after a gig in Dublin and he proved everybody wrong who says never meet your heroes. ALWAYS meet your heroes. Richie is a legend and was apprehensive to take a pic in the crowd and draw attention to himself but then he saw my aftermath of the lowdown tee shirt and pulled me aside and got his security guard to take a pic. A memory I’ll forever cherish.
Richie is the reason I picked up guitar 14 years ago!! Thank you so much for doing this interview 🙏🏼
Richie is a true bonafide star and always will be. his genius combined with Jons work ethic was an unstoppable force.
Richie Sambora is the one player that pushed me to pick up a guitar. I play because of his performance on the Wembley VHS.His work is part of my life and his records are among the best records ever released…I still listen to Undiscovered Soul at least once a month…and I was there when it came out!!!thank you for this wonderfull interview
Me too!
I mean the 'Always' solos in Wembley are everything!
A true rock legend.
And he doesn’t even have one gray hair. Amazing!
The problem is that he never boasted about his talent, that he could play quickly and officially. But I've heard such amazing things... Ritchie is the best
Richie, Taking care of your Mom is a beautiful thing. I bet she is so happy to have you in the basement. haha
that is so sweet of him ❤️
Just a good son trying to be a good son. As someone who doesn't get along with their mom I respect the hell out of him for doing that.
Richie seems to be in a much better place here. Great to see! He is one of my favorites from the 80’s. My band played a lot of their songs in the late 80’s when in high school. Still love the old Bon Jovi stuff. Much respect to Richie!
I absolutely love Richie Sambora. He is such a layed back interesting man. So talented and very humble. How could anyone not like him. Will not see Bon Jovi without him.😉
Family first and that is just extremely kind of him to take care of his mom! Cheers to Richie!
Im 66 and building a sambora signature now and this was so cool to see..great timing...Rock on richie....
He a performer from head to toe. Hell of a player.

I’ve always been a 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit Bon Jovi guy but seeing Richie play Bad Medicine on this was amazing!
Que buena entrevista me encanto...Richie es muy divertido y gran guitarrista lo hechamos de menos ...
My dad is a bit older than Richie and he’s an only child as well. I have a sister and I’m still living at home. I want to move out and all but I sometimes worry. It’s good that Richie is able to come back in a flash for his mom.☺️
Sambora is one of the greatest guitar player of all time. His style is unique. Give to Bon Jovi life and sound.
His a little bit underrated, but He's the best
Richie’s guitar playing is the Bon Jovi sound!!! He’s a master guitar player 👍🏽

Great, thanks for version 2! Love Jovi, Love Richie. His new songs are great. Legendary is catchy but shallow. They need their soul back 🙏🏻
Literally the best video I’ve seen on UA-cam in years. Massive fan thank you
I remember seeing a documentary in the early 90s in which Richie was playing a Strat through one loud amp in a disused huge block of apartments. I've never been able to find it since but it stuck with me enough to know that it got me hooked on guitar for the next thirty years! 😅 Nobody is creating riffs and solos nowadays. The music industry can push the Tim Henson's (no disprespect to him at all - very skilled player) of this world all they want but how many people pick up and stick with guitar because of him? Sambora had killer riffs and solos that were memorable and, more importantly, playable. Great interview! 🙏
I think you are remembering a Fender Stratocaster documentary called "Curves Contours and Body Horns" and you can find the video on youtube. Richie playing is around 44 minutes in.
@@mhollis60you are an absolute star ⭐️ thank you so much - it was even better than I remembered it 😅🎸
Richie is the reason i fell in love with guitar and wanted to learn to play...he is so talented and the most humble guy. I have had the pleasure to meet him a few times and he is a sweetheart😘
Richie's guitar playing. Wow. In a class of his own.
This was actually a lot of fun! Kudos to Jon and Richie for making this happen. This was a real treat for us older rock guitarists.
Richie will always be my fave . Yes he has his issues but dont we all. His are just out there for everyone to see. Did he go about leaving the band right .. nope but that doesnt take away from 30 plus years of great music and memories with Bon Jovi. Love his solo works and hope there is more to follow. Looking better Richie...dont let the demons get you down.
What a pair of sweethearts - both Chris and Richie. And I loved hearing that Richie's first instrument was the accordion! That's amazing! Chris--we can't WAIT for Season 2 of "Shred with Shifty," although I can't forget your whispered tease that you've got an episode with Dave and Pat on deck! What a gem of a show that will be!!!
Richie being Richie. Ask one question and he'll give you seven answers over five minutes. I love him to death.
Yes! That is the perfect way to describe how he interviews!
It‘s a pleasure to watch Richie playing guitar and being happy ❤️
The way Richard plays here it is so amazing
I'm not a big bon jovi fan, but I'm a fan of Richie...great ambassador to the guitar...his charvel sounds great...great vibrato...and he's having a great time!! He's obviously passionate as hell about it
Here's the story about how I became a Bon Jovi fan. I'm 53 years old so I've been around a while. I remember back in the day hearing runaway and really liking it but never really went out to get the album. I went to seaside heights New Jersey on the boardwalk in the summer of 1985. They used to have this game where you can put a quarter on a number and they would spin this wheel and then you can pick an LP which is an album or a cassette tape of any album that they have there. So I end up winning and I seen Bon Jovi 7800 degrees Fahrenheit. I got the LP and when I got home I absolutely loved it!!
Ridiculous how effortlessly Ritchie plays !
Shifty that was one of the BEST interviews you've ever done, Richie is an Absolute Sweetheart and a True Musician , absolute ton of fun watching this , Thank You ! J... Toronto
I could listen to Richie tell stories about recording all day long. I'd LOVE to hear him talk about Stranger in this Town recording process, the mix and reverb on that album is SO well done. Is it weird to have a favorite reverb sound? Cuz Stranger is mine lol
This is what the world needs!❤
Richie was why I listened to JBJ. I saw them live in the hey day, and I could tell he was doing the heavy lifting.
Now I've seen it all, Richie jamming in his mom's basement! So cool! You know, the Internet makes the world so small. Richie seems to be really healthy and his old rockin' self! Love it! Would love to see him live, can't wait actually! 🤟👍🙏❤
Listen, I have loved Richie and the whole gang obsessively since I was 13 in ‘86. But if you completely demolish a moment with someone, don’t just delete it and pretend it never happened. Own it, and explain you’re working on yourself and made a mistake.
I love you Richie. Glad you seem to be getting there. I’ve got demons too.
Thanks for giving him a second chance, Chris. It’s just a bit of a weird vibe to just pretend the first one never happened.
It’s still in the show credits, so they aren’t really trying lol
Awesome interview! I’m not a guitar player (way too hard) but a huge Bon Jovi / Richie fan and what really blows me away is the complexity of those solos. Esp when you slow them down you really understand how much is really going on there. Not only the complexity but the unique style and tones. I actually liked them better when slower because you can appreciate the musicality even more. Much respect!
Saw the Foo Fighters on Tuesday and now this video on Friday. What a great week!!! Thanks Chris!
This video was so much more interesting and educational than the Bon Jovi doc. Loved it.
He looks so healthy, vibrant and happy
He absolutely does. Good to see.
He has wasted tombstone eyes and speech. Sad what hardcore drugs, booze and age does to a man. Tommy lee, vince and Ace all have those wasted junkie eyes. Brains are fried.
For sure! Total 180 from the last time he was on here.
Ready for Rock!
Still depressing. He’s trashed or wacked out
You can't possibly comprehend how long i've wanted to see that Bad Medicine riff up close and slow.
(It always reminded me of that Money For Nothing riff.)
Thank you SO much for that!
GREAT SHOW!!! RICHIE IS SO TALENTED..HUMBLE AND FUNNY.
Man how cool of an interview.
Richie is a true lead guitar player.
Shifty just proves that FF are the ultimate coolest band in rock
RS never gets the credit he deserves as a player and writer. Total legend.
Oh c'mon, says who? He is #2 guy in Bon Jovi. The band is Jon's and everyone is aware of that. Richie made his millions for the songs and for the liver performances. What else should he have received that he has not? Not everyone can be the #1 person and that's ok
Still remember the first Bon Jovi Show I watched, lisbon 2011, went because my uncle needed company, never heard of the band before, but as soon I went and witneess Richie musicality was in completely sold afterwards. Bonjovi gain another fan that night because of Sambora genious
First saw Richie play with Bon Jovi in Glasgow SECC in 1988. Opened with Lay your hands on me, and listening to that song can still take me back there
This is absolutely a great interview! We love you Richie! What a great guy and musician!! All the best! Hope we get to see you back up on the stage with Bon Jovi
Great interview. Richie is a soulful & melodic player who fit perfectly into the band. Great singing voice too.
Thanks shifty, best show yet & great to see Riche, like a lot of comments he is the reason I started playing guitar & now have a music career,I have met richie before & he is such a amazing person, went to shake his hand & he gave me a hug - he is so fricken cool & I love your super strat shifty 👍🎸🤘✌️
Awesome, Ritchie is a hard rock legend.
I did a search on YT for Richie and found this interview from Shifty!!! Heaven!! Seeing the Foo’s this Saturday…can’t wait!! Ugh! Love this so much ❤❤❤
Glad to see Richie is finally speaking to the people! He's the heart and soul of Bon Jovi the band not the F street band Jon has been leading for the last decade. Very humble to be teaching his licks. Still love to this day 7800F and even the 1st album - have loved all those great solos for decades. Love them all. What a treat to hear Richie play Only Lonely. This is one of the best guitar players of his generation. Hope I get to see him live solo - not within a band reunion. Could hear all his solo songs/ covers... he doesn't need to play bad medicine ever again! His catalog is great. HIs two first solo alums are five stars.
I watched the Crush Tour dvd so much as a kid, Richie is a legend
Forever Jersey Boy! Awesome guitar player.
2 of my guitar all time guitar heroes! This will be a legendary video for me. My man with my favorite solo ever, Wanted Dead or alive, and my favorite lead guitar player in my favorite band of all time. Thank you Chris! Thank you Richie! ❤ Let's go!!
Great interview!
Time to take Jon to the train station and let the king of swing take over lead vocals.
Wicked singer and player ,Sambora is fully loaded!!
🤣🤣
Nice to see Richie in his home element. He seems to be very healthy and in a good place.
On another note....If you actually get Warren Demartini on your show, you are truly a GOD!
Loving this and will watch the rest later , saw Bon Jovi either 84/85 as support act to Kiss none the less with Eric Carr on Tank Drums here in the U.K . Happy Days , Oh to be 20 yrs old again !!!
He is one of the best 😄
Richie!!!!!!!!!!! Love watching all these interviews ur doing!! I watched the docuseries it’s good and I do like the honesty Richie gave ❤❤❤
Richie a cool dude, his vibe a real joy.
Thanks for doing this Chris and thanks to how you treated Richie with such class and grace. So glad this got done!
Much, much better! He seems like a great dude! I'm not a Bon Jovi fan but I appreciate the talent!
Sambora never got the recognition he should have because he was in Bon Jovi. Sambora really is fantastic
"Mom's basement" how many times have we heard that.😂
Thanks for the bonus show, Chris. Huge fan and love this show.
His tune Ballad of Youth is still one of my favs !!
awesome stuff Shifty !!!! I am a big Sambora fan that was fantastic THANKS !!
Great Show, Sambora is such a cool Cat..lots of Charisma
Such a brilliant interview my brother. From NYC I thank you. -A
Richie has always had that dawg in him. Thanks for the awesome vid
The whole time watching this interview, I was waiting for Richie's mom to yell from the top of the stairs "RICHIE...TURN THAT DAMN THING DOWN!"
Please Richie!! You need to leave your legacy to new generation! Someone please give him a channel, school or teaching engagements to leave his genius gift for the centuries to come!! Love you Richie! God bless you!
Excellent show and love the interviews, will keep watching!
The "King Of Swing" Ladies and Gentlemen.Love that guy.
Richie is brilliant. Keep writing Richie, we love it. You make that shit talk.
Love Richie,he’s one of my guitar hero’s growing up ( even though Richies only 5 yrs older than me )and as a matter of fact I like Richie more than l like the band BON JOVI he’s a great guitarist and l dig his style and talent to this day.
Richie seems great! Glad you had him on again. Love this video series Chris!
